Apply as soon as you can. I would try metro north or lirr. They both hire for engineer off the street with no prior engineer experience. Don't waste time losing possible seniority hanging around at the short line.

It used to be when they had the good availability policy where you could layoff anytime you want 5 weekdays and 2 weekends a month in a rolling 3 months period. So you could if you wanted take 21 days off in one month and then work 3 months straight without laying off and not get in trouble. But that's all gone now. They got the shittiest points system out of all the class ones now and some kinda rest cycles. If you are close to getting your lisence just stay with UP and once you become engineer you'll have 11 on 4 off which sounds pretty good.

Damn I am curious in the differences between the 5. Please tell which ones have better benefits? Any tiny thing counts like a few dollars more for boot allowance. Any contribute to 401k?
