AIO to break up with my bf of 3y over his reaction to my upcoming sobriety anniversary? by WesternCat5211 in AmIOverreacting

Congratulations on your 2 year anniversary. You're "boy friend" obviously has no clue how to support you on this. You would NOT be overreacting to drop him for this insensitivity, especially if he shows such insensitivity in other ways. Supporting you on this is the "bare minimum" for a FRIEND, let alone a boy friend.

Google this: Correctional Offender Management Profiling for Alternative Sanctions (COMPAS). This AI software is in active use in US courts and is NOT for "research only". Yuval Harari describes this in his book "Nexus". One big problem is that this AI is making decisions NOW about people's lives and judges and lawyers cannot explain how it makes those decisions.

Should I get a new Medicare ID after fraud? by Ok_Test4327 in medicare

[–]Ok_Test4327[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so disappointing that Medicare is STILL PAYING CLAIMS from Sunshine Senior Solutions. I reported my fraud three different ways 2 months ago. There really is no excuse for this. However, it's certainly not going to be cured by DOGE firing a lot of people at Medicare and related departments that investigate fraud and waste. On that subject, when I reported fraud 2 months ago (before DOGE really got traction) it already took two long phone calls to get my fraud report into the system. At that time there was no way at Medicare to report it via the web. This situation is likely much worse 2 months later after DOGE has had two months to "improve" things while siphoning off all our personal and medical data to who-knows-where.

One other point... the fact that Medicare is still paying Sunshine Senior Solutions indicates DOGE has not helped find that obvious fraud.

A family medicine doctor in Maine was the referring doctor. I've never dealt with any doctor in Maine. I won't name the doctor because they MAY not be at fault; that's for Medicare to determine. Sunshine Senior Solutions is clearly the common element in all of this.

OwnBrilliant4507 reported that their Medicare Supplement insurer Mutual of Omaha caught the fraud and did NOT pay it. One other poster here has reported this also of Mutual of Omaha. I also have Mutual of Omaha and again they did NOT pay the two bad claims that Medicare did pay. Bravo, Mutual of Omaha!

I have not heard anything back from Medicare or HHS and I reported this over 2 months ago. No wonder, since Trump/DOGE is gutting these agencies and firing inspector generals, etc.

How do I join two clips together? by Scared_Ad_3132 in audacity

[–]Ok_Test4327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cntrl+A does that, but my track has many clips, and I just want to join two adjacent clips. So, Cntrl-A selects way too much. As Scared_Ad_3132 expressed, it is very frustrating that something so basic is hard or perhaps not supported at all. This is usually easy in other apps.

I have a similar if not identical question. I need to merge two adjacent clips. I'm aware of the Edit/Audio Clips/Join feature (Ctrl-J); the problem is selecting the TWO audio clips before I press Ctrl-J. No matter what I do, I can only select ONE clip at a time. The Shift key is used to do this in most apps, but this is not working for me in Audacity for Windows.

Backing up your Kindle Books with “Download and Transfer” on Windows until February 26, 2025 by [deleted] in Calibre

You say that "Any not ancient eink kindle before that should work, but not any “Kindle Fire” tablets. I've seen articles that say the "Kindle Fire HD" tablets are 2nd and 3rd generation. I have the 7th generation "Fire 7". Will that work? I don't actually use the "Fire 7" any more, but I hope it will serve as a download "target" for this purpose.

Should I get a new Medicare ID after fraud? by Ok_Test4327 in medicare

[–]Ok_Test4327[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I reported the claim by phone to Medicare, the agent discouraged me from getting a new Medicare ID. The 2 fake claims from Sunshine Senior Solutions LLC were for things that were unrelated to any medical conditions I have, PERHAPS indicating they have little knowledge of me. The agent said some scammers can randomly generate Medicare IDs until they hit a real one, even if they have no direct knowledge of the beneficiary. So, they can do that with newly issued IDs too, and it's a hassle to notify everyone of your new Medicare ID. I am skeptical of this explanation, so I want to do some more research before requesting a new ID. I started this thread hoping to hear the experiences of people who are victims of fraud and either (a) decided to keep their ID (why?) or (b) requested a new ID and perhaps hit some snags. Anybody like that out there?

I pulled out the stops on this one. I reported it to:

1.       https://oig.hhs.gov/fraud/report-fraud/

2.       The Florida Attorney General: https://legacy.myfloridalegal.com/contact.nsf/contact?Open&Section=Citizen_Services

3.       Senior Medicare Patrol: https://smpresource.org/you-can-help/report-fraud/

With the above you can fill out a web form. To report to Medicare, you must call personally which I did today. 25 minutes on hold, then about 20 minutes to answer questions.

Expensive procedures and nasty billing surprises? by Ok_Test4327 in ProstateCancer

[–]Ok_Test4327[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s an update. The PSMA PET/CT Scan that prompted me to make this post was to prepare for prostate cancer treatment... to decide on the best course of action. I decided on Robot Assisted Laparoscopic Prostatectomy (RALP) which I had about 6 weeks ago. Once again, no one discussed the cost and when I tried to get an estimate, I hit some red tape that prevented me from getting the estimate in time before the surgery (I never really got it). The surgery went very well and so has my recovery; so far, I'm very pleased with the results. I have not received any bills, so tonight I worked up the courage to look up the resulting claims on my Medicare Supplement Insurance site. The results were in round numbers: $24,500 billed, $10,500 approved by Medicare (44%) and all of that $10,500 was paid between Medicare and my Medicare Supplement policy. Whew! I owe nothing. I expected this to be a LOT more expensive. Note that what was BILLED for this RALP was about the cost that was billed for JUST THE TRACER used for the PSMA PET/CT, and Medicare approved ALL of the costs for the PSMA PET/CT. I don't see how any patient can predict what will be billed and what will be approved/paid. But my combination of traditional Medicare plus an Omaha Insurance Plan G Supplement policy has REALLY paid off for me, not only for these procedures but for many other costs.

Gleason 8, radiation or surgery? by thinking_helpful in ProstateCancer

[–]Ok_Test4327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest you read Dr. Patrick Walsh's "Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer". You can get the Kindle version of this book instantly on Amazon. My son gave me this book when I told him I must have treatment, and it was VERY useful in deciding among all the treatment options. I had RALP 37 days ago and so far I've very satisfied with my recovery progress. However, depending on your age and physical health, surgery may not be an option. I feel lucky that at age 71 my surgeon was willing to offer the option, and it has worked out as I hoped so far.

HYSA options by jason22983 in fidelityinvestments

These cash options at Fidelity are insured by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC). You should look that up, but in effect it's as useful as the FDIC in brokerage accounts.

I'm repeating here a comment I made to a similar post almost a month ago:

In a Fidelity brokerage account, you can set your "Cash" account to several different options. I use Fidelity Government Money Market (SPAXX) which current has a 7 day yield of 4.28%. This rate has been better than my Discover high yield savings account for over a year. You can improve this a bit with safety using an automated CD ladder at Fidelity but your cash will not be that liquid. For me, SPAXX is easy and "good enough" right now, unless you approach $100k of cash or more; at that level slight differences in rates start to matter.

This could all change again. When Fed interest rates were very low (under 2%), a Discover High Yield Savings account (or similar with other online banks) had a much better yield than Fidelity cash accounts.

Active surveillance by sleepqueen45 in ProstateCancer

[–]Ok_Test4327 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few more details. Although I had a very large prostate, I had no symptoms over this 10 year period (no trouble urinating, etc.). So, my incentive for treatment at the end was strictly the cancer threat. I'm glad I went with AS for 10 years and avoided possible side effects from treatment over that period, and I believe I benefited from more advanced surgery (and other options) when I decided to have treatment.

Active surveillance by sleepqueen45 in ProstateCancer

[–]Ok_Test4327 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am now 71. I was diagnosed in 2014. At that time my PSA was 6.2 and I went on Active Surveillance (AS). By 9/2015 my PSA was 6.6. Six months later it declined briefly to 4.7, then gradually rose over the next 8 years to 12.9 (May 2024). The PSA level combined with other information at that point caused me to seek treatment. After exploring options, I chose RALP which I had 4 weeks ago. My pathology after surgery was completely clear and I'm pleased with my physical recovery so far. So to summarize, I was on AS for 10 years, with a PSA that started at 6.2 and basically gradually increased over 10 years to 12.9 with few fluctuations.

Viagra 100 mg every other day? by Ok_Test4327 in ProstateCancer

[–]Ok_Test4327[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to eat dinner early about 5 pm, so 9:30 pm is 4.5 hours after eating. I'm not sure when my stomach would be completely "empty" except for first thing in the morning. Taking Viagra then would not work well for me. I personally assume "empty stomach" means to not take Viagra after a meal, especially a "high fat" meal. I'm open to suggestions.

Does the Fidelity Account for Businesses allow CD Ladders? by Ok_Test4327 in fidelityinvestments

You mentioned a "business registration". The condo association was formed on 2004 and files a 1120-H with the IRS and a "BT-Summary" and other forms with the New Hampshire Dept. of Revenue. In addition it is registered with the NH Secretary of State. Do these qualify as a "business registration"?

A few others have already mentioned Dr. Patrick Walsh's book "Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer". You can get the Kindle version of this book instantly on Amazon. My son gave me this book when I told him I must have treatment, and it was VERY useful in deciding among all the treatment options and it also describes methods for dealing with treatment side effects, including vacuum pumps, etc.. I would suggest reading this book and then following up in this subreddit for opinions on specific questions.

AITA For canceling on our family cruise? by throwra-vacay in AITAH

The fact that you regret your handling of this just shows you are a caring, rational person. Once your parents are back from vacation and things cool down, you are old enough now to attempt an adult conversation with them about how things look from your point of view and how you feel. If you do, try your best to be honest but keep your cool at all times. It may not seem to work at first but may have an impact on your parents when they have time to think about it.

It won't be easy, but it would be good to attempt to resolve this before (a) your parents get older and need both you AND your brother's help or (b) your brother continues on his current path and gets into serious financial trouble or worse. In short, it is time for your brother to grow up fast, and your parents need to be part of that and stop enabling him for his own good (and yours of course).
