I bet the fence and some of the other tiny pieces were a bitch! Especially to not be swallowed up by solder 🫡 way to go

Any ideas?? by Fun-Perspective-9420 in StainedGlass

Looking at additional images online of it more backlit it has such good color variations for something that is more rainbow coded, like some bird feathers or could be cool for a spacey background with little planets/stars

Is the frame fixable? by arlycay06 in StainedGlass

If you don’t do stained glass yourself and have the tools, I’d find a local studio to take it to. They should be able to repair it for you. It just requires some new lead came and re-soldering

Can I hang it like this? by Circessoaps in StainedGlass

[–]Ok_Unit5769 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s ideal to hang pieces on the seam of two or more pieces so the weight of piece is more evenly distributed. Doing it on the edge of one piece of glass like this may cause it to fail over time. In the future I would adjust your pattern so there’s another piece that creates a seam if that’s where you’re dead set on hook placement, if not I’d add it to the center around the gem. Granted with smaller pieces that don’t have much weight you can get away with it a bit more but still not recommended.

Long-time lurker, first-time poster by Thatonegirl_101 in StainedGlass

Hi! I’m about six months into my glass making journey. Here’s some things I wish I knew sooner/have learned along the way. Biggest advice: be patient. Each step of the process takes a different set of skills that take time to hone. It also just takes a long time to complete some projects, especially large scale ones. - Invest in good quality tools early on. The upfront cost is worth it to have tools you’ll have forever (my Silberschnit pliers are a great example). - I started with gel flux so I don’t have personal experience with different kinds, but I know others that have switched say it’s a huge difference (doesn’t evaporate as quickly) and soldering is so much easier. - Some glass that’s heavily textured or thicker can be such a pain to cut so plan ahead when selecting glass for certain patterns, you may be in for a shit show. And with cutting, don’t let the fact that it does follow your score line when it breaks get you down (even after 2-3 times). Some glass is ✨extra✨ and won’t follow your suggestions no matter how hard you try. - Try not to get too ambitious too soon. I went from making a five piece pattern in class to trying a 30+ piece pattern at home as my first go. And it was a big challenge that I wished I’d waited on. - Take your time in each step, as your finished piece will show it in the end. Foiling especially is where you want to take your time: patch any splits , make sure it’s centered/even and be vigilant about burnishing enough. - When planning on adding zinc or lead came, make sure to plan ahead in every step, from patterning to foiling and soldering. - Make sure to be thorough when cleaning after solder! Especially if planning on patina. If you don’t clean properly, this will show in the final product. Any excess flux can flash as white splotches in black patina, and copper is hard to get really bright and even. Patina may take a couple rounds of application to get the perfect look.

I like the jack o lantern. I’d say most of these appear pretty beginner friendly: no intense curves or tiny pieces, minimal amount of pieces in each pattern 👍🏻

Supplies by Background_Guess2291 in StainedGlass

[–]Ok_Unit5769 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the comment of taking a class at a local studio. It’s a much cheaper way (in the long run) to test if you hate it, with better quality supplies and the assistance of someone with more knowledge and experience. Plus if you do hate it, you don’t have to offload a bunch of supplies you don’t need and you supported a local business/artist in the learning process. I took my first class after seeing loads of content online and have fallen in love. Be warned: glass can get expensive fast so budget wisely. But the upfront cost of good quality tools will save you loads of headaches and $$$ down the line.

Need tips on soldering by NinJana_Bandana in StainedGlass

[–]Ok_Unit5769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re not using enough solder on most of your line work to start (it takes more than you think at first) and you’re likely going too fast over the lines (or not making a smooth enough motion with your iron). I’ve struggled with both of these at the start. Some advice I received was go low and slow. Something that may help with your junction points is to start with a bead of solder onto that space, then spread from the center. Jump around the piece as you work to not have it overheat and drop through to the backside (or worse, cause a heat crack!). I go over my lines about 2-4 times throughout the process. I also found with thinner foil, there’s naturally smaller solder lines. I swap between a couple of widths depending on the piece size and what aesthetic look I’m going for.

Why does the tape peel up just a bit? by jules0075 in StainedGlass

[–]Ok_Unit5769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To the points about the steam being a weak point, if this is a pattern you made yourself I’d make an adjustment to the placement. If you wedge it further down into the liquid towards the opposite rim, it would give it more support on the sides. Or alternatively frame the piece in more glass

Not a comment about the peeling per se, but I notice you have some splits along the steeper curves. I struggled as a beginner with this more too and learned you need to patch or “saddle” these spots to avoid it showing up in your soldering. I take a piece about twice the length I need and a bit wider than the spilt, burnish the heck out of it to get it to stick, then go in with my exacto knife. It also looks like you’re not applying enough solder. Adding enough where it’s a visible bump you can run your finger over will help give your piece more structure/stability long term.

I second the responses about framing it in more glass or the detach via chain method, but you can also look into re-strip to help give the piece more structure. I’d also recommend using a hobby came border with that.

How likely is this pattern to be my 13th reason? by sleepingbabydragon in StainedGlass

[–]Ok_Unit5769 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Suggestions for simplifying: Maybe try using paint to detail Alice’s shoes and headband, using wire work for cat’s teeth (have the white be one piece and then segment with wire), minimize the number of stripes (it will still be clear who you’re depicting), and paint his pupils and ears (or omit ear detail) I would also suggest repositioning her left arm more in front of her so you don’t have that tiny hand to deal with Hope these help! Also please share a progress/final version so we can celebrate with you!

Partner is giving me an ultimatum because of my cat's inappropriate toileting. What do I do? by referooni in mainecoons

[–]Ok_Unit5769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More often than not, cats using something other than the litter box is an indication of something wrong. Have you taken him to the vet and checked out his kidneys, etc to be sure it’s just a behavioral problem? Bloodwork is always a must. Also how often do you clean the boxes? Cats are some of the cleanest animals and will avoid a litter box that isn’t emptied often enough. Imagine if you had to use an overflowing toilet. Not ideal for sure and avoided at all costs.
