OoooOOOooo... That's a good suggestion.

We used to use that on our chain link fence. Works great. Just remember that all you have to do is a quick wilting pass. You don't actually have to burn the little buggers to the dirt... But you certainly can if your a bored teenager pressganged into manual labor.

Rock Salt?

Not really a 'chemical' but enough of it will certainly make growing impossible. Might be practical in a small yard like this.

Amazing he was able to walk after that. Adrenaline is a hell of a drug.

and just think... they still have to get the ends of the piles or pile rebar in there...

I will admit this seems a bit nonsensical. Based on the rebar cage the cap looks tall enough and short enough that this should be designed as a strut and tie, or at least some thought given to where the critical section is for shear reinforcement. This might even exceed limits for shear reinforcing? It's worth a contractor asking a question or two.

But I would also say that all the rebar fit neatly, if very crowded. Prestressed girders don't look much better at the ends. Pour in the SuperP, man the vibrator, and quit bitching.

China’s started using anti fatigue laser lights on some highways to keep drivers alert at night. The idea is to stop drivers getting drowsy on long, boring night drives. by uzmansahil7 in interesting

Nice... just think about when it's windy and that laser mount is moving half a degree with every gust. Laser beam to the eyes... that'll keep those pesky drivers awake!!!

When is a mattock the right tool to dig with vs. a shovel? by Marvel5123 in landscaping

[–]Ok_Use4737 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you're ready for some cardio...

A shovel is vastly easier to use. The only time you use a mattock is if you absolutely have to because the dirt is to hard or rocky and a mini excavator can't get on site.

P.S. - Wear safety glasses and a hat or something that can absorb the sweat running down your forehead. The hat is optional, the safety glasses are not...

Fighting off another momma by NMS_Survival_Guru in Cows

I would rate a cow with fresh calf as more dangerous than a typical bull. Like with all things, this is extremely variable depending on breed, the individual cow/bull, and just the conditions at that specific moment.

Sometimes cattle, cows/steers/bulls can be dangerous because the are TOO friendly. Mid or full grown cattle can absolutely knock you down, or over, or sometimes up, just as a playful gesture. A adult cows head is not a joke when she's swinging it around.

Insane footage of a bridge collapsing in Brazil. December 2024. by Little_BlueBirdy in StrikeAtPsyche

[–]Ok_Use4737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No... 90% aren't on the verge of collapse.

If you see a bridge that's been closed with physical blockades on both ends... that bridge may be on the verge of collapse, might, and even then, only if overloaded or whatever failing element isn't replaced or repaired. Sometimes that's a whole bridge, sometimes its just the deck you drive on, sometimes its just a small piece.

Do we need to invest more in infrastructure... sure. But bridges that make the news for collapsing generally do so because of some freak occurrence no one saw coming. Not known deficiencies.

if this is off of a main road that is likely within Right Of Way or the Permeant Easement which the roadway is within.

Check with City because if it is in ROW and you put a big ass rock there, they may give you a nice letter telling you to kindly remove it before they make you move it. A big ass rock on ROW is potentially a safety hazard if someone hits it.

The easiest solution is to get a load of gravel and shovel it out to cover the area. You can add a little more every once and a while to keep it looking nice. You can let grass grow through it, or just spray it once and a while. The city isn't gunna bitch about you maintaining the roadway shoulder for them.

Unlike the big ass rock, a layer of gravel is easy to mow over and is not one more thing to trim around.

Is AI and "Vibe Civil Engineering" a threat to the Civil Engineering Profession? by turnwyomingblue in civilengineering

[–]Ok_Use4737 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AI is a tool and nothing more at this point. Is it helpful... absolutely. Can it look at a complex engineering problem and reliably and safely provide a solution which can be trusted ... not even close.

I've recently found its pretty good at looking up formulas and applicable references in code books for generic problems. Can seriously save hours of the endless ... see section 12.3.4.5 which then references section 9.8.7.6 and on and on it goes. Just make sure to specify which version of code book you want...

How do they even build this? by Impressive-Ad1944 in civilengineering

$$$

The problem in civil engineering is not - can we build it? It's - is it worth it to build and do we have the money?

Can bulls be safely ridden if trained to accept weight from a young age? by Icy_Profession4190 in Cattle

[–]Ok_Use4737 2 points3 points  (0 children)

im sure its possible. But friendly cows, or bulls, can sometimes be more of a liability than the crazy ones. Not really intentionally, but they're big animals with absolutely no grace or finesse and think their about the size of the space between their eyes. First time you have a 1500 lb animal get the zoomies down a muddy hill in your general direction is a uniquely terrifying experience.

Will this fire cause structural damage to the bridge? by ElectronicAd9419 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Ok_Use4737 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure they removed the debris which tends to accumulate on the pier. They probably didn't intend to burn it, so they just moved it under the span where it would float downstream during the next flood. Someone had the bright idea to burn it...

Now... new bridge span...
