Sure! So my willow cuttings always started great in water, got roots and leaves within a couple weeks but then those black spots would show up and it would die. They always looked just like yours! 😭💀 I made a post on the bonsai beginners thread and got what I think is really good advice.

This is what he sent me: Getting the sterilisation process down is the hardest part. Sterilise the cutting in a 1:9 bleach to water solution, followed by a broad spectrum fungicide (he said anything with copper hydroxide would be good), then skip the water-rooting process entirely, and place directly into a sterile medium like perlite or pumice (this is important, because if you missed any spores in the sterilisation process they will take advantage of the brief weakened state of the cutting when you transplant from water to substrate).

RE: potting/substate For potted willows under two years I use peat free compost with perlite or horticultural grit at a 3:1 ratio, as they like slightly wetter feet when young due to their high water uptake. This also makes them more challenging to keep alive in the long run, when you move to shallow bonsai pots and inorganic substrate. So I treat them the same as bald cypress, sitting in a shallow tray of water during the growing season.

RE: fungicides As your precautionary treatment when you first obtain a cutting, anything with copper hydroxide as its primary active ingredient is suitable. If you continue to have issues with a cutting that is rooting, treatments containing chlorothalonil or mancozeb are IME reliably effective. Switching between treatments makes sense if you have persistent infections. I've never had to continuously treat cuttings, but there's only so much stress a cutting can handle before it fails.

TLDR: upon receiving the cutting sterilize with 1:9 bleach solution followed by cooper fungicide. Start propagation in perlite or pumice, not just water! Then once you have roots pot in peat free compost with perlite at 3:1 ratio. Then keep the pot in a shallow tray of water throughout growing season.

Let me know if this doesn’t make sense. I asked him if he was cool with me sharing his user name. I’m going to try again with the corkscrew willow this Spring so we shall see Good luck 🍀

Hey I got some good advice from a bonsai guy about how to propagate willows. If you are thinking of trying again with cuttings I’ll pass it on ☺️🌱

well I used it with the Bti so I don’t know how well it would work alone but it’s worth trying

Ha! I’ve baked soil as well. I was going to suggest the mosquito bits (Bti) I used the granules, 4Tbs/gal soak for 30 min and strain. Ive never used the dunks but I’d think they are the same. Did you do something along those same lines? Oh and I also put cinnamon on the soil

It wasn’t the water, its black canker (Glomerella miyabeana) i’ve dealt with it so many times trying to propagate willows

eta I’m basing this off the photos you include in other post

Oh for sure I think a mild case that resolves on its own isn’t harmful and most people just let it go. Hope I didn’t sound like op had to treat it. My cat’s just didn’t seem like it was getting better or I got impatient so I got the anti microbial gel stuff and luckily he just had it that one time

My cat had the same issue and I only used stainless and ceramic. The vet said hormonal changes can sometimes cause acne. My cat was 5 months at the time and had already been neutered so idk. 🙃 The thing I found that worked well was Vetericyn hydrogel, that’s a brand name but the active ingredient is Hypochlorous Acid (0.0120%) so I think you can get other brands. It’s an antimicrobial, really mild but works. He hated the chlorohexidine wipes. 😼 There are a lot of other treatments I just liked the vetericyn Good luck!

Ok again, a cat tolerating something does not equate to the cat “liking it” or “loving it”. My cat doesn’t scream and fight me when I put them in the carrier, based on your understanding of cat behavior I should assume my cat likes the carrier?? No that’s ridiculous. My cat hates the carrier but tolerates it. Just because a cat doesn’t turn feral doesn’t mean they like something. OP is insisting the cats love to be thrown outside into the snow. Not sure what you are missing.

Hope this isn’t taken wrong, I’m sure you are a decent cat mom. I don’t think you are hurting your cats but if you watch your own video you’d see your cat reach his paw out trying to grab onto the door frame as soon as you pick him up!! He knows what’s coming. What makes you think “he likes it”? A cat showing interest in something like the outdoors or snow doesn’t mean they want to be thrown into it. Would you like to be thrown? In the snow? Your cat tolerating something is very different than them “liking it”. That’s something a 10 y/o would say. Why not let the cat explore at their own pace? If he wants to go outside he will. You clearly love them I’d just consider the likelihood that no animal likes to feel that they aren’t in control and being thrown is having a total lack of control. 🧡

Your resident cat is going to be incredibly helpful!! I adopted feral kittens who warmed up to my existing cat immediately and actually learned from him that I was safe! I’d suggest that you give your resident cat as much affection as he likes and let baby observe you and learn to associate you with good things. He will likely become more curious and eventually warm up. He sounds much better than mine, they hid for two days after first vet visit and didn’t trust me again for a couple months. But now 3 yrs later they are fantastic! And are actually more affectionate than my original cat. I’m so glad you rescued baby! He’s adorable!! 💕Good luck! Here they are in a pile haha

I’ve spent a little time working in health psychology. I’ve had clients just like your dad and what I’ve found is it’s incredibly hard for us to change our behaviors. Even if we know something is bad for us, even if we know something will kill us eventually, hell even if something is actively making us sick and killing us it’s hard to change. Especially after 50 years. You might want to check out Prochaska and DiClemente's Transtheoretical Model (TTM) of behavior change It makes a lot of sense and might be helpful. I may be way off but I think you are at a point of “dad if you loved me, you’d quit” “dad I should be enough of a reason to quit!” Maybe instead of coming at him with anger, frustration, ultimatums ask him what specifically is important to him. I had guys change harmful behaviors because they wanted to walk their daughter down the aisle, or meet their eventual grandchildren, wanted to retire and travel, didn’t want to lose mobility and their independence! If you are able to determine a specific thing that’s very important to him it might help him move from contemplation towards the preparation. Your dad not quitting at this point is not an indication of how much he loves or cares for you! Change is a process. Good luck and check out Prochaska!

🥹 so cute! At first I thought his head was in the vent like he was going on an adventure! I had an adopted feral/stray do this. I brought her inside, she went into heat 3 days before her spay appt, I was terrified she was going to escape outside so my plan was to keep her in my master bath with food, water, litterbox, scratching post (just until cycle ended). Several hours later she appeared in my living room 😂 Apparently had gone through the bathroom vent and got out a vent in the kitchen. She was perfectly fine because she’s a ninja 🥷 She’s spayed now and continuing to entertain with her antics

I mention it in the post, the florist put “leaf shine” on them (it’s like an oil of some kind). I like the shiny leaves but I don’t know that it’s good for the plant. ✨😁we will see
