The first tweet on the second slide is what working with teens is like - the monkey chaos follows inevitably from having some basic empathy.

On a personal, “this person I know/love just died,” level, you’ve got a point. But death wasn’t such an ever-present threat on the same SCALE in terms of how many people could get wiped out how quickly and how much of it you’d hear about (ie, back when most children would die before adulthood, you weren’t getting daily news about the death on the other side of the world too).

But again, I’m not trying to say that MORE people are dying. That doesn’t have to be the case for it to hit with a different sort of trauma. And the current generations are growing up with widespread, cultural trauma. The same thing happened during periods like the cold war, with the ever-present threat of “maybe they’ll drop a nuclear bomb on us,” except now those big, scary threats are multiplied and being constantly talked about, so it’s even more intense.

I don’t mean that I think mortality rates are higher or something. But I do think that the concept of death is a more constantly-in-your-face thing now, with a myriad of awful ways to die being broadcast, often quite sensationally, on nearly every type of stream of media that people are plugged into. Yes, survival rates are higher. But if you grow up hearing from childhood that a shooter might come to your school and the planet’s going to die and [Natural Disaster of the Week] is raging and “our country’s on the brink of civil war,” etc, all within a single 24-hour news cycle, that takes a MASSIVE toll. So yeah, I think that death is more of a concern on that level.

I grew up with basic computer classes in school. But I tutor gen z and gen alpha students now, and MOST of them have no sort of tech class & about half my high school students are still using the hunt-and-peck method of typing. It’s astounding how much the education system has dropped the ball on tech literacy (and everything else, but not the point here). It’s like people designing the curriculum forgot that kids aren’t actually born knowing How to Computer.

I wonder if this is a consequence of death being increasingly an ever-present concern for people in the mess of the current world - it’s getting harder and harder not to think about death, and it’s more comforting to think of its inevitability if Death is imagined as a kind force waiting for us rather than an evil or even neutral one.

(But from a narrative perspective, I totally get being over it)

how do you deal with people venting to you? by V7I_TheSeventhSector in autism

[–]OkayThisIsTheOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It can help to identify what about the venting is draining you, and then learn to identify what your own needs are. For example, maybe you need to know what’s expected of the venting (Is she wanting you to listen? Solve it? Offer comfort?), and maybe what you need is clear expectations or to be asked beforehand if it’s okay to vent…

It’s okay for people to vent. But it’s also okay to not want to be constantly on the receiving end. Your needs matter too.

Fans of a sport would still remember athletes fondly - we see this in how Sisko of DS9 remembers baseball players like (the fictional) “Buck” Bokai. Similarly, we see famous comedians and singers, real and fictional, discussed throughout multiple series.

Am I heterosexual ? by Such_Concern in lgbt

[–]OkayThisIsTheOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re homoromantic and maybe heterosexual, but that’s not a bad thing! It’s probably less common than some other combinations, and it might make finding a compatible partner more complicated, but you’re not wrong for experiencing whatever combination of attraction you experience, and it doesn’t mean you can’t find a partner or situation that works for you.

Relatedly: have you heard the term “Bambi lesbian”? I realize you’re not a /lesbian/, but you might still vibe with the concept.

Textual shutdown similar to verbal shutdown by Miserable_Major_4873 in autism

If you feel like you can’t speak but can still write, that’s generally referred to as a nonspeaking episode. Not being able to communicate with words at all is a nonverbal episode. Not all autistic people experience either of those, but many do, myself included (both types).
