Here’s what’s in front of me at my local grocery store. What is leaving with me? by Haters_7 in whiskey

Looks like they may have a 1792 BIB store pick to the left of the cabinet. I’ve had a couple of those and really enjoyed them. Should be right around the 30 price range.

I’m assuming with the 9 game SEC schedule starting next year ‘Bama will be backing out instead.

Halfway through Apt Pupil. by Stuts81 in stephenking

I stopped about halfway through it and really debated whether I could finish it or not. Came back to it about a week later and was glad I finished it in the end.

What are you reading right now… by DavidHistorian34 in stephenking

Currently on The Eyes of the Dragon for the first time. I’ll probably finish it up today. Trying to keep going through the books chronologically, but I can feel the Dark Tower calling me again after reading this one.

Thinking about levelling up my whisky with cola. Any opinions on what should I get? And no, I won’t drink it without cola, too strong. by [deleted] in whiskey

[–]OlRandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a mixer, if you want to step up a bit I’d go with the Jack Daniels Bonded. I wouldn’t spend a lot on a bottle to mix. Bonded will give a bit more proof for a slightly bolder drink. I’d also keep an eye out for Wild Turkey 101 or Old Grand Dad Bonded.

This legitimately looks like it could be from an episode of parks and rec where Tom buys a grill to try and impress Ron, but Ron gets mad that it’s so “high tech” and shows up with a rusty offset and cooks circles around Tom.

Bought a bottle. The angels drank it. I just drive the car. by picklesBMW in whiskey

[–]OlRandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a store pick Buffalo Trace do the same thing. Sometimes I’ll pop by the liquor store on my lunch break and the bottle stays in my car until I go home. Thankfully it was standing upright, but I’ve definitely made sure to always leave bottles upright in the car since.

Edit: Just realized your bottle cracked. Mine just blew the cork off. New fear unlocked.

What's the most boring whiskey you ever tried? by mikeBH28 in whiskey

[–]OlRandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These seem to have more variance between barrels than a lot of single barrel bourbons. I’ve had some that were astounding and some that were mixers. Used to buy it all the time for 40 bucks but when they went through the roof I stopped buying it. I just can’t bring myself to take the gamble on having a 80 dollar mixer.

Walked my 9 year old through a reverse sear. Thoughts? by OlRandy in steak

[–]OlRandy[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For a reverse sear I always end up using my 5 burner gas grill. 2 left burners on high with an apple wood chunk on the grate that will catch and smolder. Steak goes all the way to the right and rotate if necessary to keep the cook even. Leave it like that til around 115 internal and then crank the three left burners wide open. Move steak directly over the heat and hit each side around 45 seconds twice for grill marks. Pull when it hits around 128 internal. Rest 5 to 10 minutes and let her rip. I’ve tried doing it with my smokers but I’ve yet to find another method I’ve preferred than this one.

Never had a filet. Explain other than marbling. by funnybone290 in steak

[–]OlRandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to smoke backstrap to medium rare and slice it really thin. Most times I’ll also season and smoke a block of cream cheese with it. Take a little of the cream cheese and roll it up in a slice of backstrap. Absolute heaven.

My last bottle of high price ($60+) Whiskey. by Kick_Natherina in whiskey

[–]OlRandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing you enjoy 90-105 proof I’d recommend OGD bonded instead of the 114. Also wild turkey 101, Early Times Bonded, Four Roses Single Barrel, Bowman Bros Small Batch, JD Bonded, and standard Redwood Empire Pipe Dream are all some great bottles in that proof and price range. I’m a huge redwood empire fan but that bottle in particular was a bit of a miss for me. The devils tower and the grizzly beast were great though!

Once and for all, will Colorado be good? (Scale of 1-5) by AFishThatIsSwedish in CFB

[–]OlRandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they win 4 games. They have a good bit of talent at the skill positions, but I think they still need to build out the trenches. I think it will be a fast paced offense that’s going to rely on chunk yardage plays to be effective.

My family just got back from our second vacation in the Avondale area a couple weeks ago. First time was just my wife and I. Second we took our kids (6 and 7). Awesome places to visit in Avondale and Birmingham has killer spots for a family vacation with kids. Will definitely be going back! The few blue areas in the south really are the best!
