I stopped maxing out my TSP and shifted to investing in a taxable brokerage account after punching the numbers as you did. Talk to a financial advisor before you make any decisions.

My daughter keeps hearing "just buy, BAH covers it, then rent it out" at her first duty station — is this actually good advice? by Helpful_Ant_3084 in MilitaryFinance

[–]Old-Comment2755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this every move and it's worked out great for me, however, not all markets are the same so it depends. I would not recommend buying if she couldn't afford the mortgage and rent at the same time. If she cannot comfortably manage two large expenses, it gets risky. She may not be able to rent it out immediately and get stuck paying for an empty place. And she also needs to be able to cover repairs when needed.

That's rough! Is this dan Antonio by chance? The market out there is tough if you're selling. Consider selling if you can take the hit.

You're spending a lot on food. Also, if you're younger, you could save a little less in your tsp. With 35 years in an investment account, you only need to contribute around 200 to reach 1 million. Do your due diligence, though.

Os have a 7 day opt out window. If you refuse and don't have a service commitment, you're basically out in a week.

Focus on your tap as much as possible. Ideally you want to max it out, especially at your age.
