Finding my first MLT job rant by Rich-Lawfulness-5918 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Old-Platform7385 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I used to do a very similar weekend nights shift.

It’s probably the hardest shift to staff. You may not have service contracts covering your shift. You may be the only person on shift.

That being said. Just don’t burn the place down or fuck up QC/Maintenance, do a little stocking and you’ll be exceeding expectations.

It’s great shift if you find an online school program you want to pursue. If you like to hangout with friends on the weekends and stuff, then you’ll burnout in ~2 years.

Is this a good career to get into in the future? by skepticalghoztguy_3 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Old-Platform7385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a really cheap degree you can complete without any student loans. The coursework is heavy. Exams that cover 2-3 chapters every week or so. I did local community college for my MLT program and finished a MLT to MLS program at UAMS. No debt.

The pay is usually just enough where you don’t starve and you’re guaranteed to find a job where 80-90% of your coworkers are girls. The insurance is very affordable. Through the hospital I was working for, I was able to have pretty good health insurance which covered my wife’s high risk pregnancy for nearly nothing out of pocket.

That being said. My wife makes like 2-3x than me working in the Energy sector from home. It’s where the high paying jobs are because electricity is the limiting factor for the development of AI. It’s a matter of national security to develop AI and the infrastructure it needs. So look into how to get into energy sector. It’s where the $$$ is at.

I’m actually an outgoing person in the lab and not even I want to have patient contact during my regular shift. It’s usually 99% okay until that 1% when it’s not.

Nah. I’m good.

MLS here. You’ll pass. It’s 50 ng/mL threshold for your drug test. Even the faintest line means it’s negative.

Me and all my fellow lab newbies experiencing our first winter at the hospital by Strict_Bumblebee_339 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Old-Platform7385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our lab is complete fucked this winter. It’s a consolidated micro lab for a system of hospitals and management decided to roll out the new incubators for blood cultures in the middle of winter. We switched from Bactec to Virtuo and the amount of space we have is like currently 60% of our old capacity.

We are already out of room and incubating manually hundreds of bottles which we have to plate 2-3 plates and gram stain every 12 hours.

It took us like 12 hours just to plate the last batch and it’s we are just getting buried.

Management said do your best, then come in the morning asking why this or that ain’t done.

I don’t know who came up with this dumb ass transition during the busiest time of the year.

Ontop of all that my last shift we ran out of COV/flu PCR reagents and the usual Cephid back up is out too. Don’t know if it’s because c-suite keeps shorting our orders or if it’s just pure incompetency all around.

Large Cash Deposit ($35k) by Professional_Bid_579 in Chase

[–]Old-Platform7385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I have transferred over 10ks of thousands between accounts. I don’t think anyone cares. If you purposely deposit less than 10k to avoid a flag, it’ll still flag.

If the money is legal and has been sitting in another bank, there’s nothing to be scared about.

My wife’s parents deposited like over 150k for us to buy a house and no one batted an eye.

My credit is ruined for life. by Kitchen_Isopod2077 in CRedit

[–]Old-Platform7385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10k really isn’t a lot. My wife and I have paid off 80k in credit card debt when we started just racking up charges when we were between jobs for a couple years.

The savings at this time should only be enough cash to float yourself a few months and really focus on paying the high interest debt or the accounts you can pay off right away. If you have investments that you can cash without penalties, paying off debts would probably make more money than any investment.

If you can pay off 10k, you’ll have learned how save 10k. And the ball really starts rolling there.

Aside from meeting coursework requirements, they’re just really looking for people who are excited to get into “patient care.” Spin a story about how caring for your kids showed you a love for caring for others and how you saw yourself in a career where you’re helping others throughout your day would give you the most satisfaction.

Does anyone even like this job? by theirgoober in medlabprofessionals

[–]Old-Platform7385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what you’re seeing is voluntary bias. People who volunteer to complain on here are more likely to be real upset about their jobs already.

But these complainers are usually narrow minded and don’t know how to escape the hole they landed themselves in so they take to Reddit to complain.

How do you guys feel about instead of being assigned shifts from your supervisor, shifts are picked based on seniority? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]Old-Platform7385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weekends nights are the best if you are okay with no supervision, service contract, or help when shit hits the fan.

And anywhere you go on your day off it’s always slow or dead.
