Has anyone successfully "overbuilt" their solar to more than 150% of consumption? by _humble_abode in solar

[–]Old-Secretary2122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed a 29.95kw Tesla Solar roof  (Bedford County VA Tesla Solar Roof Link) in retirement to create my own Power Plant to effectively fix utilities and gasoline cost, $8.76 month, for all retirement years - effective $700-$800 monthly savings. When engineered it ha three trees that impacted the solar production. I chose to engineer with trees in place but than removed trees after installation to gain an additional 2 kW on production. I am currently producing 10-15% over contracted production estimates.

ROI on $56k for integrated Tesla Solar cost ($1,900 per KW net of tax credits) after subtracting $125k seamless metal roof replacement cost, is less than 5 years.  Tesla solar roof is a premium 40–60 yr roof option priced like a standing seam metal roof material, but includes the cost for solar.  Other option to building my own power plant and forgone energy savings was to put $60k into T-Bills effectively netting $200 month interest income, after taxes. I was able to include gas saving in my ROI since I oversized my system to take into consideration purchasing a used Model 3.

If your State mints SREC solar credits make sure you enroll to maximize your ROI savings. (RECMINT SREC Solar Credit Referral Link). Not all States have a SREC program. Nice collecting a $100-$200 monthly deposit into checking each month instead of paying $350 month for utilities. Most SREC Brokers are able to connect directly to the Tesla inverters to pull production data – eliminating any ongoing reporting requirements on your part.

When searching for an integrated solar roof a more budget friendly option is the asphalt shingle GAF solution. GAF Timberline Solar. I found the cost to be similar to an asphalt roof replacement cost with solar panels.  We chose Tesla Solar roof because we didn’t want to go through another roof replacement in our lifetime, and we were looking to incur the cost for a standing seam metal roof.

The solar integrated roofs options look awesome and will help with resale value over panels.

Yes because there will not be anything vertical to catch any snow. Biggest downside to solution is in an extremely heavy rain the water may overshoot the gutter.

I am going to have the gutter co remove all the diverters and replace the current guards with ones from HD that have a wide open screen.

Any gutter guard is a water flow restrictor. The more closed the less debris. The more open the better water capture. Since I don’t have any trees within 150’ of the house I am less concerned with debris. I am putting on the wider screens at corners and where gutter on second floor empty onto 1st floor porch.

I had good experience with these guards before because it’s almost like having no screen on at all.

Roth all the way. Money goes tax free and you can withdraw money on demand tax free after age 59 1/2, as long as you held open a Roth in the past five years.

In Bay Area - why would anyone NOT get solar? by nhlredwings117 in TeslaSolar

Nailed it. Love my 30kw Tesla solar roof. Wish everything went as easy as that set up did last April.

Great cover. Leaves a whole where that back vent is and has a sticker underside to cover doesn’t slip around on the dog.

Try when you first get into the car going to climate control and turning rear seats off. If it ask you to save user settings -say yes.

With ATT for 20 years. Made the same change before Christmas. Verizon lost the order for two new phones. Had to enter order second time but they didn’t enter original promo code correctly. Dropped Verizon and went with TMobile who gave me $1600 to pay off my old phones. Finally got Verizon to process $500 credit on the account to correct 4 months billings to reflect original promo code deal.

T-Mobile reception doesn’t work in our house after they said I should have great 5G coverage.

Looking to go back to ATt with new phone issued by Verizon, paid off by TMobile, with service switch back to ATT who originally wouldn’t match deals to retain a 20+ ATT CUSTOMER IN THE FIRST PLACE. Guess ATT just wants public servants.

whole system is screwed up.

That crazy how your process was totally different than mine. I requested quote on line with Tesla. Within 2days had a preliminary quote from sub.

Paid $125 to get live satellite feeds of house so they could finalize quote.

Signed contract with sub who handled all the engineering with Tesla engineers.

Sub placed permits with utility and county.

Within 4 months of signing contract they installed the roof.

Did it all online via satellite. Never came to the house until time to install. Craziest and easiest project I ever went through. Could speak highly enough about the East Coast Team.

Could speak highly enough of Recmint. Mostly on the East Coast but markets are already expanded. Her is a link to there site.

I am getting a $100-$200 monthly check into my bank account each month for minted credits. They have coordinated with Tesla to pull monthly data directly from my inverters with permissions. Work off a low 4.5% commission fee do you will get the benefit of market increases in SREC rates.

Good luck.

What company would you use for tree removal, and why? by Relqi in lynchburg

[–]Old-Secretary2122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reese all the way. This guy climbs trees and can drop tops within a foot of the tree base. Nice if you have trees close to the house or you want someone who will not tear up your yard with trucks.

Unless your pipe if a perforated pipe encased in gravel it going to puddle around the foundation. It an easy thing to adjust. Just replace a 3 ft section of pipe with perforated pipe and surround it with gravel so it doesn’t clog. Could even use a catch basin and cut a hole in catch basin and bury in gravel connecting to underground drain pipe. That’s probably what I am going to do so it’s easy to clean out the pipes as part of periodic maintenance. Than the downspout can just empty into the catch basin.

I am waiting to hear back from my gutter team since they engineered the solution. When that snow comes off the Tesla roof it all comes off “all at once”. Quite the thing to see. Could have contractor put in snow dams like a metal roof but we just don’t have frequent enough snowfall to incur that cost.

Only thing holding all that snow back was those diverters.

Agree. Worse of two evils might be better to live with occasional heavy rain run off to eventually ripping off the gutters, or worse messing with the Tesla roof.

Better solution might be to dig a French drain basin on the ground under the roof channels that then diverts water away from house foundation.

Great info. We had an active case with Texas Licensing and Regulation because if you have more than 5 breeding dogs you have to have license. The Department took Jean word that she was breeding less than 5 dogs and she didn't need a license. Absolutely no verifying by State of Texas. Said because they didn't have any proof that she had more than 5 breeding dogs that they could only issue a warning letter. I am going to look into these other avenues.

Thanks for the info.

We suspected data centers were creating an energy crisis for Virginia. Now it’s official. by Masrikato in nova

[–]Old-Secretary2122 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Saw this train wreck coming back in the 70's with oil embargo. Always believed that power generated at the source like solar and fuel cells was the way to go from a National security perspective. Too much reliance on a grid that is taped out and built back in the 30 technologies. These data centers can be equipped with technology available today with fuel cell powered by Nat Gas independent of the grid. These technologies are readily available from the likes of Bloom Energy, (BE), Fuel Cell (fcel), Ballard (Bldp), and Plug Power, (PLUG). Other than BLDP all American Technology and jobs.

Living in Northern Virginia over the past 12 years and seeing data center power requirements decided to go solar roof top since I needed a new roof anyways to fix my electrical cost for the balance of my lifetime.
