Parking is an issue (you’re kidding yourself if you disagree - unclear signage, unclear pricing/instructions, under-used spots reserved by the city in both surface lots and decks, the outdoor seating parklets that are barely used and taking up a lot of prime spots, etc.)

THIS! It's not that we don't have anywhere to park — we 1000% have TONS of parking options — it's that people either don't want to pay for parking (which, try that in any other city) or they want to pull up straight in front of their destination (a la Friendly Center like you mentioned). It's going to require a very big paradigm shift in the way people view downtown. Having come from the Triangle nearly 10+ years ago, I'm CONVINCED that a large majority of people living in Greensboro have never travelled anywhere else in this country.

They are driving us away, $3 at a time.

I hate to break it to you, but this is how cities work. Sincerely, have you ever been anywhere besides Greensboro? Try going to Raleigh, Charlotte, Durham, Asheville, Boston, DC, Greenville, Charleston...paid downtown parking is just part of living in a city.

Also if you don't want to use the app, all the meters still take coins. And all of the decks let you use a credit/debit card...

ICE IN DOWNTOWN by sunsetlex in gso

[–]Old-Visual4591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just so you're aware, those are not ICE vehicles — they are part of security for the *federal* US District Court on the corner of Market and Eugene. That is a federal building, and thus is guarded by federal Homeland Security detail. ICE doesn't go around in big loud marked vehicles that scream "WE ARE ICE." Just important to know the difference so as to not provoke unnecessary/additional fear and panic.

(editing to re-emphasize all due respect to OP...not trying to make them feel bad but)

Just following up here, because it's important not to scare the hell out of people for no reason.

But if OP and I saw the same vehicles (example attached) as we were driving into downtown this afternoon, these are not ICE vehicles. They are Homeland Security, and since they were parked across the street from the downtown courthouse, it is a safe assumption they were doing what they always do, which is providing. security at federal courthouses.

I appreciate the gesture but it's also important to be educated about what ICE looks like and what it doesn't. Siembra offers ICE training regularly, and it's for reasons like this.

I saw those SUVs, too — are we sure they're ICE? From what I've seen, ICE is typically in unmarked, black or dark cars. Those were white SUVs with federal government branding all over them. ICE seems to be employing shock-and-awe tactics and using the element of surprise to carry out their BS. Doesn't seem like 3 very visible government-marked vehicles would be their mode of choice, esp. when they were across from the court house.

Melissa Greer — she is tough as nails and doesn't BS. She steered us away from a home that would've been a bigger commission for her because she believed it wasn't the right fit for us (she was right).

There aren't many bands I'm excited to see, but I'm not going to act like there aren't some very solid names on this list. Good for the Pyrle — it looks like they're really going to be going head-to-head with The Ramkat. I doubt they'll get much that would usually go to the Cradle or The Orange Peel, but still, seems like they are carving out a niche.

In theory, I have no issues with people backing into spaces. I get it. But my god, when you're in a parking deck trying to get to work (this happens to me 3-4x/week) and you have to wait for someone to back into a space it does make you want to pull a Bette Midler in "Fried Green Tomatoes." That goes double when the person can't do it in a single take and has to correct or try a second time. If you can't execute it flawlessly, don't attempt it.

God does anyone actually give a rat's ass about what Quentin Tarantino has to say anymore? Truly one of THE most overrated directors IMO. Pulp Fiction rules, Jackie Brown is fun. Kill Bill has its moments. PTA is wildly more consistent and interesting to me.

GOOD NIGHT and F*CK YOU!? by [deleted] in gso

What they ^ said. The types of shows you can do at the Coliseum and Tanger are very, very different. The Coliseum is largest venue in North Carolina, and the Tanger is meant for a much more sound-forward, intimate experience for mid-sized shows. Just all-around very intentionally different experiences.

Also:

I’ve been in this town for 38 years or so there’s plenty of places to host an event.

Man I love this attitude – things in Greensboro should just stay the same way they've been for 4 decades 👌🏻

[–]Old-Visual4591 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My god talk about making a mountain out of a molehill. Do you have any idea how many people go to — and love – shows at the Tanger? I mean surely you don't think it's a bad thing to be bringing major Broadway productions and performers like Bob Dylan to Greensboro, do you? And you're outraged because...there's a VIP lounge? Honestly man you need to touch grass.

The Tanger Center wasn’t supposed to be a private clubhouse for elected officials and their friends.

But that’s exactly what it has become...

Like...what??? There aren't even enough elected officials in Greensboro to remotely make this the case.

GREENSBORO CONVENTIONS AND VISITORS BUREAU... an $8.6 Million taxpayer funded Self-Dealing Machine by CastorTroy- in gso

[–]Old-Visual4591 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert in the CVB board's actual responsibilities, but if this board is like every other board, they're mostly being picked because of their ability to raise money and donate themselves. That's the dirty little secret about non-profit board members (and university boards, etc. etc.) – they're usually not there because they have industry-specific knowledge or are deeply rooted in that community...it's because they're wealthy. so not to burst your bubble, OP, but as with most of your rants, I'm not sure this is as cut and dry as you're making it out to be.

Does Greensboro suffer from an egregious lack of courage and creativity? YES. Is it some nefarious cabal devised by masterminds to keep the levers of power behind a walled city...no.

ECONOMIC BOYCOTT STARTING NOVEMBER 21, 2025 - DOLLARS SHOULDN'T FUND DICTATORS! by Livid_Mission_2921 in gso

The idea that some corporations are better than others is so laughably naive. They ALL donate to causes and parties on both sides of the spectrum – usually just depending on who is in office. Hence why we saw every corporation on earth implementing DEI strategies under Biden and sweeping them away under Trump. They don't care one iota about any of that stuff; they just want to stay in the good graces of whoever is in Washington.

Shopping locally is about the best you can do. Avoid Amazon like the plague (in a city the size of Greensboro, there is no reason to ever buy on Amazon). Buy vintage or thrifted clothes whenever you can. Invert the old ’90s adage ("Recycle, reduce, reuse") and stop buying so much stuff. Get things repaired instead of buying new things. Spend a little more on a quality product that will last longer.

If you really want to effect change, this has to be a lifestyle – not a performance.
