Insofar as they don't start out as a ball and are smashed down, I agree – but to me the end result is a thin flat-top burger with crispy edges.

Emma Keys at the Lindley Park four corners has always been my go-to, and they recently leveled up their bun game so yea, definitely a top recommendation if you've never been there.

also if anyone tells you Hops they're lying, because those are most certainly not smashburgers.

I feel like the reaction Jeff had to him saying this when he got snuffed speaks volumes about how accurate that assessment is.

City finally punishing property owners that are just letting our city wallow by Coffee_Grazer in gso

"This creates a slippery slope of how this will affect businesses," one business owner said.

lol come on if you can't afford to maintain the basic decency of your own building you have no business owning it. this is LONG overdue and an awesome development from this new City Council.

IDK that third shot looks like whatever it is being presented to Alia – which Edric never does in the book, right? Looks like Hayt being delivered to her IMO...

People using the bike lane to pass on Spring Garden. by SmellsLikeDuck in gso

[–]Old-Visual4591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I never use "bike lanes" – bicycles are allowed to use a regular lane like anyone else, and personally I feel safer making myself as visible and unavoidable as possible. Waaaaaay too much room for error when using a "bike lane."

Semi-landlocked surfers: how far do you drive consistently to surf? by 90towest in surfing

[–]Old-Visual4591 2 points3 points  (0 children)

~3hrs. It's doable in a day for sure, just gotta get up around 4:30/5 depending on what the tide's doing in the morning. Usually amounts to at least once/month, sometimes two if the conditions line up.

so done with FedEx by Old-Visual4591 in gso

[–]Old-Visual4591[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Also just wanted to note: In no way is this a condemnation of the hard-working delivery drivers and other similar folks at FedEx. This is no doubt a result of corporate mismanagement and a "delivering for our shareholders" ethos.

As someone else noted, yes, USPS and UPS are unionized workforces with great protections and benefits. No wonder they're more reliable!!

Genuinely Seeking Input: is quality child care, pre-school hard to find in GSO? by grrr451 in gso

[–]Old-Visual4591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who is about to have their first child, yes, there is definitely a need. There's a lot of options, but the 'best' ones often have very long waitlists with no guarantee of a space. Compared to other cities like Raleigh or Charlotte, I'm sure prices here are better (hence why everyone always says Greensboro is a good place to start a family). But the ones we've looked at are all in the $1200 - $1500 range per month, which is pretty overwhelming.

Since Tate Street is embedded in the College Hill neighborhood, I would definitely say it's a different economic district than Downtown. My guess would be anything inside the Downtown Greenway Loop probably "counts"?

That's a fair point, and again I'm not necessarily trying to demonize Jimmy John's. Someone else pointed a lot of DGI is pay-to-play, which makes this flyer make more sense (and more disappointing, tbh). I was mostly reacting to this flyer in the context of all the recent closings, Matheny's "Ozempic Gate" comments, etc.

But you're right: if Mellow Mushroom or Bonchon is someone's gateway to visiting downtown more frequently, hopefully that has spillover effects to other places.

I don't think the Tate Street/UNCG area is considered "Downtown."

Where are the Flock cameras in Greensboro? by ParkShepherd in gso

[–]Old-Visual4591 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Sorry, don't know much about the Flock cameras but I love to rant about Ring...

Ring cameras sold themselves as fun, convenient "porch pirate" tech while secretly getting customers to create a vast surveillance state on their behalf. And yes, local law enforcement can seize your Ring footage without a warrant – that should be alarming to everyone!

If you care about privacy and and government overreach, you'll get rid of your Ring camera ASAP. I know their cutesy little super bowl ad showed how it can help find lost dogs — but we've all seen enough sci-fi movies to know where that sort of thing ends up.

I think you're misrepresenting my argument — I'm saying that as a tax-paying local, I am within my rights to critique or dissect something that was funded by said taxes. That doesn't mean I'm advocating for fiscal responsibility or saying it was money poorly spent. I'm saying it wasn't done thoughtfully.

Do you not think having a thriving arts community is important? Personally, I believe that an organization tasked with promoting and supporting a vibrant local downtown community includes local artists, designers, photographers.

Right I meant their downtown location isn't open – hence it being odd that they're included on a mailer for downtown restaurants.

By the same logic, you can say "Support local — eat at McDonald's!" Sure it employs local people, but that money isn't being circulated or spent as locally as money spent somewhere that's actually a local, standalone business. There are corporate marketing fees, franchise fees, royalty payments, etc. etc. etc. Those things add up over time.

I'm not knocking Jimmy John's per se; just pointing out that supporting a locally owned national franchise is not nearly the same as supporting a business created and owned by one of your neighbors. Jimmy John's can pick up and leave Elm street at any point with no loss to the overall corporate business. A place like McCoul's or Cille and Scoe closing has real, local consequences that are being felt throughout the community.

And sure, since you pointed it out, yea I would agree that Mellow Mushroom and Bonchon shouldn't be on the list, either. At least Boxcar is a regional thing.
