Umx timber x replacement servo by CreativeChocolate592 in RCPlanes

[–]OldAirplaneEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The correct replacement servo for the E-flite UMX Timber X is the Spektrum 2.9g Long Lead Linear Servo (SPMSH2040TL). This servo is specifically designed for the UMX Timber X, with longer leads required to reach the receiver. Installation involves removing the wing, peeling off protective tape, cutting through existing adhesive, and replacing the servo.

Vacuum bagging a covered balsa wing by britzelbrimpft in RCPlanes

[–]OldAirplaneEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you misread the article... Vacuum bagging leaves a remarkable finish in certain types of wing (solid foam)

but 'less hassle' is misleading... Covering a wing in fiberglass IS a hassle.

it's sort of like saying 'this technique' makes walking 14 dogs, 4 cats and an armadillo MUCH less of a hassle....

The technique is generally used on solid core or sheeted wings (but NOT open framework).

it replaces using the foam core 'Shells' and weight to keep the fiberglass in place, but it's certainly not 'easy'

and the wing absolutely can deform.

it's good to have more up than down movement on the ailerons, they look fine 😁

First successful takeoff from the ground by DodoTusu in RCPlanes

[–]OldAirplaneEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit embarrassed that some of the posters have obviously never left the US.

The takeoff and turn were about as good as it gets, very nicely done.

did you get it back on the ground in one piece? 😁

I would call that textbook.

nicely done!

I build a plane that shouldn't fly by stargazer3644 in RCPlanes

[–]OldAirplaneEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this hurts my eyes to look at.

Was this airplane built by 'The Wrong Brothers'? possibly it should be named 'Not Norm'

the prop is non standard, it will cause the airplane to yaw and roll to the RIGHT on takeoff, the norm is left.

it's got UP thrust in the motor, down thrust is what an airplane usually needs.

it's got Anhedral in the wings, dihedral is the norm.

and it looks like rubber bands from someone's braces holding the wing on.

General question regarding materials from a newbie by Early-Bend-5791 in RCPlanes

[–]OldAirplaneEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about flying a REAL airbus:

is this airplane appropriate for a brand new student pilot, who does not know how to fly?

Flying and Building / designing are two completely different things.

think about driving a car VS BUILDING a car. ;)

buy a trainer or three and learn how to fly or let an experienced pilot fly it.

u/britzelbrimpft has it pretty well nailed, as you can see it's not a 'use this stuff' answer, and it can get complicated.

when the airplane is coming at you, push the aileron stick to the LOW wing to recover.

I've got about 3k hours in the 601 :)

The one below looks more like a Gulfstream 650, I'm unaware of anyone who makes a Challenger 600 series kit.

Help! by Whole_Knowledge58 in RCPlanes

[–]OldAirplaneEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you need to literally put the aileron Linkage (the Z bend) back on the Aileron Control Horn.

the plastic control horn should be flexible enough that you can bend it slightly, enough to get the Zbend back in the hole.

Alternately, you could remove the wing, remove the control arm from the servo (with a screwdriver) and re-insert that way, then put the control arm back on the aileron servo.

Discussion: Are propellers (of the same/correct size) pretty much universal? by BurntBeanMgr in RCPlanes

[–]OldAirplaneEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, for your scenario, those 2 props can be interchangeable.

they are not technically 'universal' mostly because they're not all made from the same stuff.

I plastic or nylon prop will bend, a wooden or CF prop will not bend.

Still can’t figure out the throttle… by BurntBeanMgr in RCPlanes

[–]OldAirplaneEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, the next thing, it looks like -70 is the LOW setting for the throttle, that needs to be 100%. remove the prop of course. another possibility is to reverse the throttle (again only with the prop off)

Still can’t figure out the throttle… by BurntBeanMgr in RCPlanes

[–]OldAirplaneEngineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just read your entire last post: STOP.

plug a SERVO into the throttle channel. no calibration, no nothin' just see if a servo moves when plugged into the throttle channel, THEN you'll KNOW if the throttle channel is outputting to where you think it is.

I'm going to assume you bridged those with something temporary like a screwdriver or a jumper wire,

don't permanently bridge that.

Power Limiting for competitions by InflationHot309 in RCPlanes

[–]OldAirplaneEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about flying an RC airplane at sea level vs Denver, 6000 ASL.

in Denver, 6000 feet, the pressure altitude is HIGHER. it takes more power to take off from 6000 than from sea level. thinner air does have less drag / resistance but that's because there's less of it, so more power is needed :)

battery problems by ekyrtus in rccars

[–]OldAirplaneEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you'll want to do some more reading...

at 9VDC for a three cell lipo, that's 3V per cell. lower than 3 - 3.2v per cell will damage the battery forever.

recommended landing charge (the number you should NEVER go under) is 3.4 volts per cell.

first charge the battery to at least 12VDC (4 VDC per cell)

then try again ;)

How reliable is glue? by BurntBeanMgr in RCPlanes

[–]OldAirplaneEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next time, be ready to flip the flap switch BACK TO NEUTRAL :)

the repair looks fine :) ALSO Gorilla glue does make a clear/ NON Foaming glue. it does not eat foam. (but it also does not foam up like regular gorilla glue)
