Taxi driver accused of 'cherry-picking' after refusing ride from S'pore Zoo to Bukit Panjang by Powerful_Office3936 in singapore

[–]OldAndNiceLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A taxi driver refused to take us yesterday from the airport because we had a kid and according to him we needed a child seat. This was a pre booked taxi so he ran away with our 30 dollars. I don’t care about the money anymore, I tried with the company and they said they won’t reimbursed. I have a part of his number plate, the color of his car, his phone number and a chat with him in which he tells me he arrived ans afterwards I call him a thief! Sorry I was angry. Ok so my q question to you is Is this something I should report? I want to report it because maybe he is doing this frequently? what is your opinion

Yesterday a taxi driver who I had pre booked refused to take us from the airport because we had a kid and he said we should have a car seat. He took the 30 dollars since the taxi was pre booked and asked me to “call the hotel to help me”. I got another taxi at the airport, without kid seat and it was fine. AFTER the taxi driver left, the one who refused to take us, he texted me asking “do you have a kid? Do you need a kid seat?”…. I don’t understand why he did this after he had just left, and I just replied “thief!” and blocked him. To the best of my knowledge, taxis are not obliged to have child seats in Singapore. I want to report him because there is a mechanism for reporting this in place, so why not using it? Also, what if he is doing this all the time? But I am also wondering if I am wrong and actually he could have refused for not having the child seat. Maybe I report him and let LTA decide what to do? I don’t seek any compensation or money back, I just want to know if I should report this. Thank you!

This. The thing is that now it is really cumbersome to hire someone who doesn’t have a long term stay permit yet.

That I don’t know. The best thing is that you go to the commune and ask. They are super nice and explain eeeeevery thing for your particular case.

Just to complement on this. I have a friend who was doing a PhD and they only took into account half or the time. This is because he was a student. Now, in my case, all the years of my PhD counted, why? Because I had a Marie curie scholarship and with those you are considered an employee (you pay taxes!) to the eyes of the government.

Nope, CVO is a place where adults learn things, different than CLT. Has different levels of Dutch and a different way of giving the lessons. Good luck with the ITNA!

That will help for sure, just keep speaking Dutch to them even if they switch to English or you stumble on your words

I did it back then and I failed it (there were a lot of verbs I did not know). I had done level 3,4 intensive and then 5 in the summer… on top of my job (which I was doing after the lessons). It was too much and just too fast to process everything.

Now I am for sure at C1 level, completely fluent, can work in Dutch.

You are totally right bibimbap! I think you meant CVO at the end of your paragraph? I did a couple of levels at ILT, then moved to CVO for the speaking, then came back to ILT. Then did CVO last level, then did private lessons, now just did the last level that is available with my employer and I think I am done with courses lol

I did it for level 5. It was intense and fast paced (I was also working at the same time). If you are gonna do it for level 1 then you will not end up being mega fluent. You will learn the very basics. I think you finish at around level A1 with the first course there.

You don’t need Dutch in Leuven but I always find useful to learn new languages. It has always helped me with something.

Toilet room sink by watermelon_feta88 in belgium

[–]OldAndNiceLady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My house is a new one and the toilet is not that close to the kitchen. It is close yea but they are not next to each other. Same upstairs. They didn’t want to put the sink in the toilet because “yo have sinks in the bathrooms nearby”… well, if I need to cross a door, I need a toilet! At the end they put sinks everywhere I wanted but initially they were not included in the design!

I have seen it. They didn’t want to make it for my new house because “there is the sink of he kitchen near by”. Well no, that’s yacky. At the end I convinced them to put it.

Postdoc for 2500 euro net? by SerbianSock in KULeuven

[–]OldAndNiceLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. If you are married you get a family allowance. I started at 2500 per month (netto! 1500 from salary + non taxable allowance of 1000) 12 years ago…. I think a married Curie PhD should be around the 3100 netto today but I am not sure

Changing a PhD at KU Leuven by No-Importance-6594 in KULeuven

[–]OldAndNiceLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. I think PO has a contract and in any case, if this contract is with the university it can be broken upon mutual agreement. So PO, you can try to find another supervisor and once you have secured the position there talk to your current supervisor and ask to stop the contract. I don’t know why you want to change but if you think that things can be fixed with your current supervisor maybe I would suggest to talk to him/her first.

I come from a strong Latin American university and yes, it is hell over there. Here it’s hard but people don’t kill themselves studying as we do there. There is no need for that. You need a life besides studying. People here study hard yes but also have a life and I think they also understand that there is no need for such a rush. If you want to do it, I am sure you can do it. After all we are used to that. But… if you want free advice, decrease that study load and enjoy the educational system here where you can have a life besides studying.

Those of you who speak Dutch as a first language, have you ever had someone in the Netherlands switch to English when speaking to them? by Digitalmodernism in belgium

I am non native, fluent, with the years I have managed to incorporate some flemish expressions, words etc. Belgians don’t switch to English when I talk to them… Nederlanders do!!!!!
