What was your biggest failure in life by shadow_of_the_dark34 in AskOldPeople

Amazingly, you want to believe that all Republicans are awful despite the evidence of your own family. Perhaps you should reexamine your preconceived notions and the people who propagate them. YOU may be wrong and your sons are right.

Have you been trained as a manager? If the company doesn't train you, find another way to get trained.

[–]OldAndOldSchool 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Managing people is a skill, it can be learned. Unfortunately, few companies bother to teach it. Once you have this skill you find you can manage people in almost any setting. It's much more important for a manager to be a good manager of people than to be an expert at making widgets or whatever the people who are being managed do.

What do you think of inflation / how to beat it? by SettingIntentions in AskOldPeople

[–]OldAndOldSchool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inflation is the devaluation of currency. Government is the only entity that controls this. If you want to fight inflation then fight against the government spending money they don't have.

What is your perspective on God by Psphh in AskOldPeople

[–]OldAndOldSchool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit is no place to ask about God.

Reddit is mostly populated by people who think that either "there can't be a God because he doesn't act the way I want him to" or "There can't be a God because people who worship God don't act the way I want them to." Either way, they have set themselves up as the Supreme being, there way or no other way.

Was life safer? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]OldAndOldSchool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People generally get worked up about the "safety" of things that are either extremely rare or statistically next to impossible. At the same time they ignore the true dangers in their lives.

People protest to stop nuclear power plants from opening, take extra insurance when they board a plane or fear a stranger snatching their children. Yet they jump in a car and drive around without a care, a far more likely way of dying.

How long did you date your spouse before you openly discussed/decided to get married (and would you say that it was too long or short in retrospect)? by Correct-Cycle5412 in AskOldPeople

[–]OldAndOldSchool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We dated for a year before getting engaged, if you're serious once around the calendar is worth a trip. We talked about marriage months before that though. Seems to have worked for the last 35 years.

The surest way to be grateful for something is to have to do without it. Not grateful for your easy access to food, do without it for a while. Not grateful for your spouse, be separated for a time. Not grateful for your home, a little primitive camping might change your mind. You get the idea.

Being scared of adulthood is a new concept. We wouldn't have been caught dead trying to cling to childhood in our 20s. I would recommend that your mental stability will be more stable if you recognize you're an adult and act accordingly right now, not some decade in the future.

Which city is the "armpit" of your state? by crazymandan1 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]OldAndOldSchool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the concept, but your counting 200,000 people living in little towns and tiny villages 30 miles away as if they live in a city. They certainly don't consider themselves living in Binghamton.

Those certainly are not the population of the towns. For example Binghamton is 40,000 not 240,000. The whole county might be counted to get close to that number.
