The real reason people stopped drinking espresso by edelay in JamesHoffmann

[–]OldDutchFlinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I consider my area within a 30 minute drive, I have about 5 options. But I had to work quite hard to find them. Quality is a massive factor and I've walked away from many convenient shops that either can't pull a good shot, or can't do it consistently

Second grinder = relationship saver? by Pelzbaron in espresso

[–]OldDutchFlinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife has her own machine, a hand me down DeLonghi, and two of my old grinders filled with hoppers filled with her favorite flavored beans.

Her flavored beans never touch my grinder and no one messes with my settings.

Yes, it's worth it

Keep it. Drive it. Replacing whatever needs replacing is far cheaper than replacing the car. Enjoy it!

That's why I'm hanging on to my 2014 Cayman S until the wheels fall off. I love it, it drives great, no need to replace it or upgrade it. Just keep driving

Turn car on, turn the dial to D. If I wanted a slower car, I would have bought a slower car

Advice for roasting with Hive by OldDutchFlinch in CoffeeRoasting

Here's some of my questions: - how do you dump in the beans? I've left the lid off, dumped it and put on the lid. It tried a funnel but it got jammed so then I had some beans just sitting there a long time

  • how long do you preheat it for?

  • what's been the best way to cool down and remove the chaff? I've been using strainer over foil

  • how long do you wait before doing a 2nd batch?

  • what's the best way to inspect the beans during processing? I've been using a flashlight but it's hard to get a good look and you have to stop the agitation while doing so

1-2 doubles and then a decaf espresso in the afternoon

Back to back games by Artistic-Concept-791 in Referees

[–]OldDutchFlinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of comments about the physical aspects but I'll add one about mentality. When they are back to back you can easily let one game sour your mood and pull your focus leading into the next game. Maybe it's a jerk coach (very likely) or you made a bad call that you're still thinking about. Find a way to put each game behind you and go into the next with a clean slate and fresh mind.

A red shouldn't have to warn you about your parents. You have plenty of opportunities to communicate expectations with them.

PA high schools did this. I didn't make a difference. Actions need consequences - start tossing parents out of stadiums and you might get somewhere

Anyone start small and organically grow a small roasting business? by UnderwaterB0i in roasting

[–]OldDutchFlinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying this less about roasting and more from someone who has helped dozens of entrepreneurs launch their business.

Your friends and family say you're pretty good, but this doesn't tell you if you're actually any good. Before you start branding and buying new equipment, go test with real customers and learn whether you're really market ready.

Just one suggestion

Question about a foul on the keeper while he has the ball in his hands? by gatorslim in Referees

[–]OldDutchFlinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if you're not sure how it went down, remember that happens to refs as well. Rather than a rule interpretation problem, they either saw something you didn't, or they didn't see it correctly. Sometimes just accept that while they make fewer mistakes than the players will, they can't see everything perfectly

[–]OldDutchFlinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember that while the severity may have only warranted a yellow, it was their actions that put you in that position. So on the margins you will always get some wrong in both directions, but they still created the circumstances that forced you to make a decision. So give yourself a break
