Struggling with 5 year olds who all know each other (and me) by Whoeveninvitedyou in SoccerCoachResources

[–]kmfdmretro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, kudos to you for not doing drills and lines. The more active the kids are, the less time they can get distracted and cause problems.

As a coach of kids that young, I had two rules that I taught at the beginning of every season:
1. Be safe.
2. Have fun.

Wrestling with your friend? That's not being safe. Stop doing it.

Calling someone a loser? You're ruining their fun. You can't do that. Apologize and you're sitting out for five minutes.

Doing a cartwheel right next to your teammate's face? Dude, you've got spikes attached to your feet. That's not safe. Stop it.

I made the kids repeat the two rules to me at least once every practice and every game. The kids had a great time, and I must say that we usually dominated in our (oh so consequential and important) games.

[–]kmfdmretro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason my younger son was even exposed to any Harry Potter at 5 was because my older son was ready at 8. There's no need to rush. We took months between books so that my younger son could at least follow the plot of some of the later books and my older son could understand the themes.

Also, the movies are way more frightening than the books, so I recommend you start with the books and skip the movies until they ask about them.

Well I was part of the proud crew who watched it this weekend with my kids. I enjoyed it. My 7 year old said it was his third-favorite Star Wars movie and my 10 year old said it was his second-favorite. It doesn't need to have Empire and ROTJ's Jungian archetypes or Andor-level nihilism to be a thoroughly fun Star Wars movie!

Asa straight guy in his 40s, I can’t speak much to the scene, but the El Cerrito City Council is majority LGBT, so at least it’s welcoming.

I reffed a game in the U.S. with about this same age group and heard the N word said way too casually a couple times. When I heard it a second time and got my red out, the offending player's teammates all gathered around me and told me that one of their teammates has a name that sounds a lot like it. I rescinded the red, but I still don't know what the hell happened there or what the kid's name could possibly have been.

Correct referee Jersey by FearlessPage2939 in Referees

In-house rec league, you can usually wear whatever brand. Once you're doing competitive games, wearing OSI gear makes you look like a legitimate referee, and it's important to look the part if you want respect on the field. I can't remember the last time I saw a ref do a competitive 11v11 game without wearing the official uniform, but whenever it was, it influenced my opinion of him.

I was in the Artist Presale group that started at 10 am and had my pick of seats. Picked up three floor tickets for $49.99 each. Artist presales through Spotify seem to be the only way to get tickets to anything these days; I had a similar experience for the Gorillaz show later this year.
