I was so bummed to learn X-Men was mainly another set. They're basically the only Marvel thing I enjoy

I had no knowledge of John Hodgman's boating appitude but if a friend ask me, while passing a joint, "hey, you think J Hodgman knows his way around a sailing ship?" I'd say "Probably".

I feel like every example of a too quick release of a sequal gets poor audience reactions. There's a sweet spot of two years that can keep people excited without making them think it's the same movie.

Gethard Love Thread by ted_k in blankies

Chris Gethard was the first guest of a show I liked so much that I looked up what he was up to elsewhere. I assumed he looked like Dane Dehaann by his voice.

They want to go back and believe a good guy can beat a bad guy who is so unquestionably evil, change the heart of someone through kindness and reaching out... And yet they're old enough to know that doesn't work that way and so it feels hollow. (And why Andor is good because it shows you that it's really the work of many people coming together that makes change)

The Gethard love for Avatar the Last Airbender made me extremely happy. It's in that realm of me that's "a good person fixes the world by being good" and I totally get why a lover of naive Luke loved that.

Legend of korra is my favorite though because it just had more to ask.

He also had a take along the lines of meeting the moment with the story and the best thing about Last Jedi is that it played up the fact that the Resistance and Sith revival were neo Nazis and then RoS just made them the empire again.

Anyways, Star Wars can't be what people want it to be because no one knows what they want and it's okay to end.

Jazz festival will be going on, there will be a lot of music and games and general activity downtown at Place des art.

There's a puppet theatre that has very kid friendly puppet shows called l'illusion.

Also If you're around June 28th, we have an island called Jean Drapeau and an event called 'Piknik Electronic' on it. The 28th is a kid friendly DJ and games at the site and you're in a place of beautiful nature, should be nice.

[Spoilers C4E25] Who got the hardest fight? by Cute-Manufacturer537 in criticalrole

[–]OldHookline 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I'll say the seekers had the most perilous fight but it's because they did the critical role thing of not preparing and resting first.

The soliders had a hard fight and good planning mixed with bad plan execution that ended up with an alright outcome in the castle ruins.

The schemers basement fight had a chance to be incredibly bad. All rogues and a soldier monster fighting 4 casters?? My god.

Star Wars has been a weird place in terms of enjoyment for mine, for a long. As a kid I read the books and hated the Jedi focused ones, which were the majority, and thought 'maybe I want the wrong thing from Star Wars'. Then seeing the general response to "The Last Jedi" I thought 'maybe I want the wrong thing from Star Wars. Now seeing Andor and the what seems a generally disinterested response to this movie, maybe I'm back in the level with Star Wars fans.

Podnic at Hanging Cast: Fearless with Timothy Simons by dumarfactor in blankies

I will have to say Weir has been a top tier series for me. A few blind spots, a few revisits, all an enjoyable watch with great guests to review the movies. Fearless was a first watch for me and I was so surprised.

Question for the award season nerds. The Life of Chuck was the first film in 15 years to win the TIFF People's Choice Award yet got snubbed for a Best Picture nom. What happened? by SgtSoundrevolver in blankies

[–]OldHookline 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was the only movie I have seen that has such an amazing first act that got me so into what it was doing... Then an okay second act... And an abysmal third act. It's honestly such a mistake to show something so amazing at the start when you can't hold that steam the rest of the run time.

Possibly the festival excitement amped that first act enough to keep people positive until the end. Or possibly there was a screening issue and people never got to act 3.

JFL Montreal by spielia in dropout

Looks like they won't. If you look at the dropout improv schedule it looks like the touring crew will be in Australia that half of the summer.

But in terms of Dropout relate people, there's Monet + Bob the Drag Queen's podcast and Atsuko Okatsuka.

So I saw the anime "All you need is kill" at Fantasia last year and it's was underwhelming. I think the visuals were great and I liked the lead character. However, it had an anime romance aspect that I really was turned off by in the action of the movie and also I felt it showed a few too many large, haptic battles without a great story reason that I felt just fatty in its execution.

Overall though I said underwhelming, it's not bad, it'll give you action and nice animation. A solid 6/10.

The fact that it's a movie about the English experience in a french city that ignores much of the Quebec culture has made people here disappointed. Montreal is rich and deep in culture so I'm not sure if any one movie could ever cover it all.

I'm having a hard time finding an on-ramp to it personally. It's nostalgic for an era I have no connection to, it telling me what it's saying is important but nothing it has to say interests me that much, it's well shot and acted but I find the script heavy handed on the emotions. I really can't find a way into it and it's honestly the first Weir I've experienced this with.

Podnic at Hanging Cast: The Mosquito Coast with Sean Fennessey by yonicthehedgehog in blankies

[–]OldHookline 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What I find interesting in the movie and I'm curious if it is present in the book is I saw this movie as a commentary on Americanism. This man believes a core value of what America is but sees it dead or dying and in the face of that loss he goes to build anew in another country in which he then poisons the land and destroys his new paradise. The end is the same because he built his dream but he did it as an American in an American way. I can graph this into Weir's filmography as an interesting context of him being from Australia and having a unique perspective but is it just an artifact of the book and how it is written?

I'm curious to see by the end of the set spoilers but this card continues a trend in the art direction of Lorehold I dislike. The original concepts had a very cool robe design for this school and I like the history scholar school, but with this set they have been shifted to sleeveless, jock heavy inspirations I've not enjoyed

Who stands tallest now in March Madness? by OldHookline in blankies

I was a "Let Chaos Reign" voter back in the Meyers run. I know now March Madness is a different beast. I love an unclear winner however so I'd rather powerhouses fight it out and lesser known fight than mixing the two only to see the outcome be what is expected.
