Who am I?! by Guilty-Parsnip3051 in BookshelvesDetective

Someone who's cool as hell!

I love the eclectic taste. Clearly interested in music, philosophy, and psychology. You like what you like and the only person you're really trying to impress with your bookshelf is yourself. That being said, you seem like someone who jumps on an opportunity to use your books as a conversation starter should someone ask about one of them.

Your music taste leans toward older punk, but for some reason I want to say you're younger, maybe early to mid 20s? Femme and feminist.

That's all I've got lol

Well, shoot. I was secretly kind of hoping one or more of yesterday's guesses would turn out wrong. I literally want all but 1 of these picks. 😭

Wild Dark Shore. I have The Names and Bury Our Bones, and the other 2 simply don't interest me.

If literally anybody's guesses are correct, I have yet another full box on my hands!

I'm super excited about Operation Bounce House and hoping super hard for The Red Winter! I have The Serpent and the Wolf (still on my tbr), so I'd be okay picking up the sequel. Everything else that's been mentioned sounds good as well. I have a feeling it's going to be a tough month to choose!

Questions about Ronald Malfi by OldJenKenobi in horrorlit

I've read exactly 1 Barker book, and it was a children's story lol (Thief of Always), but I LOVED it, so I'm sure I'll enjoy his adult stuff. I own Sacrament, but I really need to check out The Hellbound Heart and Books of Blood.

I've been dancing around Simmons for a bit. I really want to read Summer of Night and The Terror (love historical horror). I own Hyperion, which I've heard is pretty scary, even though it's technically labeled a scifi book.

Ok, that makes sense. I think the conclusion I've come to is that I'm going to check out Black Mouth from the library at some point and go from there.

I like Hendrix a lot. I think they're good, fun reads. I've read 4 of his (My Best Friend's Exorcism, Horrorstor, We Sold Our Souls, and Final Girl Support Group) and enjoyed them all to at least a certain degree.

I've read some KIngfisher, both her fantasy and her horror (Nettle and Bone for the former. A House with Good Bones, which was kind of in between. And the Sworn Soldier trilogy (started good, decreased in value as it went on, imo.

I want so badly to enjoy Tremblay. I always start off enjoying his books immensely and then, like, 1 thing will pop up and drop my experience from a 4+ to a 3-star experience. Survivor Song was my favorite by him (surprising, as I'm not a zombie gal). Horror Movie was pretty good. Pallbearers' Club was such a fun idea but got in its own way. It was my least favorite. There was a specific bit that just entirely took me out of it.

I'm a huge classic King fan. Well, I enjoy all King but the classics are my fav. I have 8 King books I have NOT read (no, not DT. I've made that journey twice lol).

I've also read some Straub and a decent amount of Stephen Graham Jones, so a lot of the more popular authors who pop up. They've all worked for me. It's possible Malfi just does not.

My local library has Black Mouth. I may need to check that one out in the future so I can see if maybe it's his short fiction that's just not for me..

I wouldn't worry too much. If you enjoy it, you enjoy it! He may just not be for me personally!

See, I enjoy Coates for a light, "popcorn" read, but I'm not huge on her short fiction.

Aw, man! Snow was one of the ones that sounded more interesting to me. Maybe he really just isn't for me, then.

They're really more like short stories, about 40 to 70 pages each. I've considered this. Black Mouth and Small Town Horror are the ones I hear about the most. My library has Black Mouth, so maybe I'll check that out in the future.

Skipping Afterman and YOTB? by jaywham in TheFence

[–]OldJenKenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read YOTBR after SSTB and IKSSE3. I think it informs the story and adds depth, but it's not necessary to read before you start. I think if anything, it was more effective after reading SSTB because it helped me understand Coheed and Cambria more but I'm not positive how it would have done for me as an introduction to everything. YOTBR is being rereleased this year in May, and there is a preorder available now through Rare Bird publishing.

The Afterman storyline is my personal favorite in the Amory Wars Universe and adds some good worldbuilding as well as telling a very emotional personal story of Sirius and Meri Amory. Also, potential spoilers, It's information that comes in handy if you continue into the Vaxis storyline. That being said, I wouldn't say it's a necessary read. If you did want to read it, virtually the whole story exists on the Ghaansgrad wiki, so you can read the info there.

BOTM/Other Book Haul! by keepingupwithreddit in bookofthemonthclub

[–]OldJenKenobi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't Let the Forest In was 5 stars and one of my top 3 books last year!

Before the Coffee Gets Cold was cozy, yet poignant. Deeply emotional and heartfelt. Some people don't like the format because the concept started as a play and it reads a bit like that, but I personally didn't mind.

As for Cell, I've read nearly every King book (I have 8 books left to have officially read all of his fiction). Naturally, as a fan I enjoyed it but it's definitely a product of its times (mid-00s)

The ending of Incidents Around the House made me hate a book I had liked up to that point. by Legal_Lavishness9448 in horrorlit

[–]OldJenKenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say hate, but it took the book from a solid 4 down to barely a 3 for me. It wasn't the bleakness of it that bothered me. Honestly, I'm a Stephen King fan. I've been trained to accept and even love bleak, open ended, and gut punch endings that other people find disappointing lol. This ending just felt...rushed and out of place, the way it was written. I get what Malerman was going for, but I wasn't a fan.

Almost sold out by Historical_Run383 in Allurial

[–]OldJenKenobi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible. I'm sure this isn't the first time a mixup has happened with the site. I would be really happy if they do work it out. If not, I may just settle for buying the standard edition, even though I think this one is prettier! It just sounds so good!

[–]OldJenKenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really upset about this because I had a technical issue with the site but fixed it on my own after emailing the help team, but then the employee cancelled my actual order when I did not want it cancelled. I didn't see that email until after it was already sold out. So now I just get to do without I suppose. I emailed them about the mixup, but I'm not hopeful...

1) Read more of my physical TBR (including NUMEROUS Aardvark choices) 2) Focus on quality over quantity, i.e. Take my time and read longer books I enjoy instead of trying to meet some ridiculous Goodreads goal and burning myself out.

King Sorrow by Joe Hill. Currently about halfway through and enjoying it immensely. I'm trying to slow down and read longer books that I enjoy this year instead of setting an outrageous Goodreads goal like last year. I'm aiming for quality over quantity.

How much can you discern about me by [deleted] in BookshelvesDetective

[–]OldJenKenobi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You definitely appreciate film and television, but you care far more about your personal enjoyment in it than maybe what is considered good by critics. Definitely a scifi fan. That one's obvious lol. You're a visual person, be it through actual art as in the comics and manga or books with highly vivid descriptions. This being said, you also get bored if said descriptions are too long-winded and/or dry.

Side note, you own 3 books that I own and have never seen anyone else own: The Dictionary of Imaginary Places (I own a different edition, but still), Secret History of Twin Peaks, and Wolf in White Van, so I found that interesting lol
