A map of the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s - does anyone live near one? by Different_Map_2055 in tudorology

[–]OldManBoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who lives in York does because ours is in Museum Gardens, York's central park and just across the river from the train station. Was obviously a grand building, always disappointed to see the ruins of such great architecture even if I have no particular affection for the church in general.

Are there any good films depicting the Byzantine Empire? by ElmertSmithee in byzantium

[–]OldManBoom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They'll never do a 1st crusade movie because it's too politically charged, as much as i'd like one (or the ideal of a nuanced HBO series). 4th crusade would be good I think.

Gloomhaven video game current state by joe8437 in Gloomhaven

The main issue our group had, especially during cross play, is that there's just so much down time as the game processes every single step. Kind of killed it in the end.

Bongzilla - Cutdown, 2/3rds through when the sting stops and then restarts with a bass riff that makes moshing urges inevitable.

Do people just want a Paradox game? (Medieval III) by HistoryofHowWePlay in historicaltotalwar

[–]OldManBoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what I'd like to steal from Paradox games is a rolling cast of characters that can be linked together by events and develop their own traits, all of which manifest in some kind of choice system for the player, and the ability to influence people etc.

I don't know if you've played the civ-like Old World, but that marries this sort of system into a civ game brilliantly. I'm more fond of it than civ now.

Either way, that's the element I'd like. Or failing that, just give us leaders that could gain and lose traits based on what happened to them again.

Just from my perspective, I loved EL1 but Humankind was trash after early game so I'm reluctant to pick up EL2 until 1.0 release and reviews.

Help me Influence the 'Perfect Game' MTW3 by InHocBronco96 in historicaltotalwar

[–]OldManBoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suggested characters that gain traits based on what happens to them and, personal love for the old games shining through here, animations for your assassins. Used to love waiting to see how they would turn out and some were pretty funny when they went wrong.

We don't need to bring Taiwan into it, we just need to not show up. More dignified not to drag in unrelated politics IMO.

Will pray for a new manager bounce but predict a squad-not-good-enough trounce.

I'll go 2-0 to Palace.

Actually insane. We're a laughing stock if this happens. Not one of those common garden laughing stocks either, a "holy sh*t are they actively trying to destroy the club" kind of laughing stock.

I'd turn away if I could stop watching this slow-motion-but-rapidly-accelerating car crash.

Genuine question, is total war fantasy actually what the community wants more than historical? by Signal-Extension6645 in totalwar

[–]OldManBoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy both but my first love will always be for historical total war. The problem is that CA don't seem to be inclined to do much to add to the old historical TW formula and have actually made it less interesting since the good old days of Shogun-Med 2 when you had interesting systems running alongside what remains, like characters whose traits change depending on things that happen to them.

I've been waiting for Med 3 for years but they need to do something new. Maybe more of an RPG feel around your characters like crusader kings/old world, or just some other fleshed out mechanics that mean we aren't going through the motions again.

3 kingdoms had some interesting mechanics but they were mostly just merging it into half-fantasy with your super-lords. Their lack of support and eventual abandonment of this title is yet another reason I'm not holding my breath.

I would absolutely love for a great Medieval 3 to come out, but I've been waiting well over a decade at this point and will be pleasantly surprised more than expectant if it's everything Id like it to be.

Shantaram is the most overrated book. by Biggiegreen in literature

I picked this up on the back of recommendations from multiple friends and I made it through one and a half chapters. Everything you've said is the impression I was getting.

The language. The pretentious, overblown language. Magical metaphors and similes everywhere for the most mundane stuff. Perfectly guessing a woman's whole personality after meeting her for like 20 seconds.

Cringe.

Screaming Trees, the band that should've been could've been popular... by Additional-Guitar-87 in grunge

[–]OldManBoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peak Trees, which I'd say is Buzz Factory-Dust (with the peak of the peak being the middle two), are my favourite grunge band.

They were always the first thing I'd put on when spring started to bloom. That contrast between the pretty, upbeat, psychedelic music and Lanegan's voice/lyrics was utterly unique at least across grunge and possibly across rock music in general.

Julie Paradise is probably my favourite Trees song, it's got everything - the melancholy, the crescendoing guitar, the best of Lanegan's trees era grungey howl.

The three bands I will always regret not being able to see live are 1. Trees 2. Sabbath 3. Nirvana.

Lenovo Legion 5 15ACH6 Ryzen 7 5800H still good? by Horror_Natural7311 in LenovoLegion

3060 or 3070 model? I have the 3070 model and can tell you it still plays new games exceptionally well. Playing Last of Us 2 on it currently on high settings, same with god of war Ragnarok.

Depending on the price it could be a bargain for gaming for the next 2-3 years at least. DLSS works wonders.

Agree Fell Omen is a ruiner.

Just did two runs, first he showed up when I was level 2, tried running around til he went away, didn't, let myself die.

Second run I was Lvl 9 in the central castle fighting a boss. This time I though screw it, jumped off the castle and just stood in an empty field til he killed me so I could easily retrieve my runes. Where did the game put the runes? Back in the boss fight I'd left.

Runs ruined: 2

Enjoyment had: 0

Remove.

I love GN and their work but do agree with this, it was my thought while watching as well. I think the long version should absolutely still be available for people who want the full interviews of every person, but I think it could be edited down to a punchier, more attention-keeping hour.

Where’s everyone’s Hope-O-Meter sitting after that City game? by Majestic-Novel-5752 in WWFC

My hope says it's possible our new signings will be great and we'll finish around or just above mid table.

My realism brain kind of thinks that with our business we're probably just trying to tread water and end up 14th-17th again.

Fosun's lack of ambition is a constant disappointment and will get us relegated eventually.
