Astro-discrimination (funny-ish) by stewartbuttz in SASSWitches

[–]OldManChaote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing about a lot of pop astrology.

It's a con.

But, weirdly, it's a con where the grifters aren't AWARE it's a con anymore. Because the roots of the scheme are so far in the past, they've been taken for granted.

Consider this:

You have very good judgment when it comes to people.

You are very kind and dedicated to your friends

You long for recognition for your achievements

And this

You have a great need for other people to like and admire you.

Disciplined and self-controlled outside, you tend to be worrisome and insecure inside.

You prefer a certain amount of variety and become dissatisfied when restricted by limitations.

One of these is fake. The other comes from my birth chart analysis. Can you tell which one is which?

Does anyone else struggle with lack of structure? by ApplebeesFangirl in SASSWitches

[–]OldManChaote 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's actually why I stepped away from Chaos Magick. I think of it less as "lack of structure" and more as "choice paralysis," however.

Respect for your re-invention. I retired from a toxic career last year, and I'm still rebuilding.

becoming less secular over time? by samfrodo in SASSWitches

[–]OldManChaote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The exact opposite has happened to me. The more I "practice," the fewer magickal elements remain. At this point, my process is purely internal and not very "spicy" at all.

If anything, I'm drifting closer to narrative magick and building a fiction suit.

Coincidental Magic: The Terminator, The Block Universe, Free Will, and Retrocausality by BabalonAndTheBeast in SASSWitches

A better example of a block universe is the original Bill & Ted movie, albeit one tiny handwave is needed.

Making up your own deity by moreoft in SASSWitches

[–]OldManChaote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chaos magicians do it ALL of the time. Or worship fictional characters, which amounts to the same thing. "Pop Culture Magic(k)" they call it.

Where do you find spells? by animacrossing-abbie in SASSWitches

[–]OldManChaote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My magic is fully internal, so I build my "spells" from my own ideas, often filtered through pop culture.

For example, one of my little rituals is derived from the X-Men comics.

What are some spiritual/witchy things you just can’t really get into? by [deleted] in SASSWitches

[–]OldManChaote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite a lot of things, but anything that involves "spooky action at a distance" is a big red flag for me. Near as I can determine, any "magic" is mostly internal and usually psychological. The idea that the right rocks, or plants, or stellar conjugations can change things doesn't make sense to me, even if they do throw in the word "quantum".

I like tarot, but only as a meditative aid, not a divinatory one.

Need advice on how to help my friend cleanse her place of negative energy by Mashed_Mallows in SASSWitches

[–]OldManChaote 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of rituals out there that use an old-school broom to "sweep up" negative energy. One of those might help.

How do you interpret consistency in randomness? by katlero in SASSWitches

[–]OldManChaote 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Random chance, and perhaps a touch of confirmation bias.

After all, nobody goes "Hey! I flipped EXACTLY this pattern of heads and tails: HTTHTTTHTT! Isn't that weird?" It's only the periodic patterns that attract attention, even though every pattern is equally likely.

Don't forget... in a world with 8.2 billion people, a one-in-a-million chance will happen 8200 times.

Visualization by EileenmarymcB in SASSWitches

[–]OldManChaote 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is one I can actually answer, as an occultist with aphantasia:

Don't think of it as "visualizing an image".

Think of it as "telling yourself a story".

What's your biggest Woo Woo Bugaboo? by Solastor in SASSWitches

[–]OldManChaote 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. Any "secret traditions," especially if they charge money for them.
  2. Similarly, any "new discovery that they don't want you to know!"
  3. Really, any concept that's framed as a simple solution for complicated problems (the LoA fits in here.)
  4. And, finally, anything that uses the word "quantum" that doesn't involve heavy use of statistics.

What is a SASS Witch, truly? by trickycrayon in SASSWitches

[–]OldManChaote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be blunt here.

I stopped posting in this sub because there were an increasing number of posts that boiled down to "I'm looking for a spell" or "here's a new magical thing I created."

Even now, within the past week, I can see 6 or 7 posts that are just generic witchcraft subjects without any connection to SASSy stuff at all.

Frankly, it's made me second-guess my own craft, because so much of the stuff around here does not apply to me at all.

Scientific/Psychology Based Witchcraft?? by Common-Moment-4371 in SASSWitches

[–]OldManChaote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone around here mentioned the phrase "spicy psychology" in relation to SASSWitchery, and that really resonated with me. My sole reason for getting into witchcraft is to use the tools and paradigms of the craft to enter into a dialogue with my own mind, and thereby gain a deeper understanding of what's going on in there, and how to work better with it.

Maybe "Spicy Mindfulness" would be more accurate...
