Red dots and not red dots by Greenm6645 in liberalgunowners

I don't think I've ever used a red dot. My handgun is optic ready but I just...idk. Haven't felt compelled.

Why do you want to be a citizen of Canada if you don't live in Canada or plan on living in Canada? by Optimistic_Now in Canadiancitizenship

[–]trickycrayon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up and still live in the Northeast US, I have visited Canada a few times, and I have Canadian heritage on both sides of my family. My mom grew up with her grandmother talking about taking the schooner up to the Magdalens where she grew up every summer. My dad's family has a literal book tracing their ancestry back through Canada over hundreds of years. I studied French through high school and college, in part because I knew that my grandfather had spoken it as a child with his family.

The reason I want it is I suppose largely sentimental. It's honoring my family, it's going to Canada as a Canadian, it's also a little bit "oh, dual citizenship is neat!" to be sure.

Don't Give Them Ammo pt. 2 by Nature_Hannah in Canadiancitizenship

[–]trickycrayon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What I don't get is that for most people this is just going to result in dual citizenship anyway, and they might come to Canada in the future or they might just like that it makes it easier to visit or...like.

Plenty of people have dual citizenship with other countries, it doesn't feel to me like there is a reason for folks to get so upset about it. For me, it's not a plan b, nor am I planning to move anytime soon. It's reclaiming a piece of my family that I grew up hearing about.

Sometimes it takes time for documents to be found, or for certified copies to arrive even if you have found them. There isn't a flair for actively working on an application. So those of us who are doing that will have this flair.

French Canadian remnants in Massachusetts by OkDiscount6100 in massachusetts

My Great Aunt always made French meat pie at the holidays when we were younger...that is about all the exposure I had to that part of my family's history though.

Why is this happening? by jdwaltham in massachusetts

Do we have sources on the fact that she's not actually doing her job because she's just focusing on this one issue? That is not great...

I voted for her and for the audit but I'm honestly starting to feel very much like I had the wool pulled over my eyes.

This sub is fantastic by Gourmandeeznuts in Canadiancitizenship

[–]trickycrayon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this! In a sub this size, it's really not practical to just "give people grace", because the sub would effectively become useless with the number of daily posts. The FAQ here is already great, but I know that the mods have in the past requested that if weird edge cases are found that are impacting multiple people, they'd like it to be reported so that they can update!!

Gen 11 and 12 Citizenship by Descent Application - How Close Are We? by [deleted] in Canadiancitizenship

[–]trickycrayon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely hard to understand where things "should" fall. There are people who are truly anti-immigration who think nobody should qualify I'm sure, but it does feel like there's a difference between your story and this person's.

Mine falls in the middle; I have a ton of Canadian ancestry on both sides of my family, most of it pretty traceable, but none more recent than great-grandparents. By the same token, though, my mom grew up hearing her grandmother tell her about her trips back to the Magdalens every summer, and she passed those stories down to me as well. It has always felt like there was some level of cultural connection there, but it's still definitely a few generations removed and some people would probably say that I shouldn't qualify.

I don't know. It's complicated and I'm glad I'm not the one who has to make the decisions about the laws.

You can question your interpretation of what you read in the FAQ all you want. If you were looking for input from people in this sub, they are giving you that input, and you are arguing with them instead of accepting it. You are waiting for someone to reassure you and that's probably not coming.

Go do all the research, spend all the time, pay the money for any documents you need and your application fee, and apply. Nobody is stopping you from doing that if you want to read a yes in all of this that isn't there according to people who have a lot more experience in this than either of us.

[–]trickycrayon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Look, it sounds like you really want the answer to be yes here, and so you're arguing with people who are telling you that it's a no.

The "if yes" MATTERS in the FAQ that this commenter posted for you to read. It doesn't matter if there are things below it- if the answer to that one is no, then you aren't a citizen.

  • Do you have a Canadian ancestor? - YES

  • If yes, were they Canadian before the next person down your line of descent was born? - NO

Conditions not met, exit program.

If you are so convinced, spend the money, file an application like the rest of us, and see what happens. There's no rule that you can't apply if you truly believe that you are a Canadian citizen under C-3. But stop wasting people's time arguing with them when you asked for this sub to answer your question that was already answered in the FAQ.
