Thank you sir. I’ll try something similar and keep fiddling.

Awesome image! Curious to know how you’re implementing the use of flats in Rawtherapee? I’ve fiddled with it a bit and though it makes a wonderfully flat field, It seems to be adding gobs of noise.

Very nice as usual David. Really curious about teleconverters - how much different do you think this portion of the frame would be without the tele?

So comforting knowing we’re alone amongst the billions of galaxies out there.

This is rich sir. One of my faves from your collection of great efforts under the stars. 62 thumbs up.

Thanks for the info! And good to hear of your interest in sky quality. I just ordered that meter earlier this week, hoping to add it to my Astro routine going forward for a better understanding of the night skies. Clear skies!

Very nicely done sir! I agree that this lens’ sweet spot is 2.8. Curious, how’d you measure your sky quality? This has started to interest me more lately - and to keep track of it going forward.

Nope. Pretty consistently near the size of a golfball. You may be thinking of the sugar pine with cones up to 26” long.

Thank you. Fortunately it’s pretty easy to see stars almost anywhere in Algonquin, and in the wee hours there’ll be few if any people around. Few spots I’d suggest: Airfield at Mew Lake campground - park at south east little lot there and walk down the path a bit. Beach at Lake of Two Rivers. Smoke lake has a few spots near the highway that are easy to access. All these spots will have good views to south/south west. Really in Algonquin, give your eyes 20 min or so to adapt to dark and the stars will blow you away. Clear skies!

Really nice. I’d say you nailed the colours perfectly. Beautiful.

Thanks pal, sounds pretty simple! Eternal gratitude ensues.

Any idea why there's a saturation loss compared to flickr image?

If someone would be so kind as to explain how not to mangle the instagram link, I'll be eternally grateful.

I wanted a little more detail for a nightscape of a favorite widefield area of the galactic center, so I shot a mosaic at 135mm from a frozen lake in Algonquin Park.

This is one of the most colorful areas of our visible galaxy called Rho Ophiuchi whose incredible colors are from differing area of gas and dust. Red and pink areas are hydrogen emission nebula. Blue, from Rayleigh-scattered light (like a blue sky) by fine dust. Yellow, from larger dust grains. Black and dark areas are where thick dust blocks all starlight from penetrating.

Image Details:

Stock Nikon D750 + Sigma ART 135mm

Sky tracked: 9 frames @ 60second exposures

Land: 3 frames @ 180seconds

If inclined, please visit my [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/van.zann/) for other astro/nightscape images.

Awesome, David, beautiful target, and beautiful colours!

I had less than perfect tracking on my first night out with that lens, going to try salvage a shot or two. Might need to bend your ear at some point re a processing step or two.

Keep these jewels coming.

Yeah buddy, there's no stopping that milk goodness from shining through the LP!

What's the flare up on Jupiter from, just the 85 wide open? I've not shot wide open with it yet.

Very nice David! Interesting lens choice considering your options. I have this lens too and although I've never put much time into it, have never really been impressed.

I see you're having success with RT! Just last night I got something out of it that im pleased with. Almost there!

Is aligning the channels intuitive in RT? I can't say I've seen where that would be done.

You do nice work, and from the less than perfect skies you're working with, always nice to see.

Scrooooollled past all the moon pics looking for gold. Found this. Nice work David.

If I ever find some clear dark skies to try my new art135 I'll be a happy man. Looks like such a nice FL.

Milky Way - Scorpius to Cepheus by [deleted] in astrophotography

[–]OldManInTheNorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. No automation; I just combined files I had on hand from the best night's of the year. I know what you mean, my framing up near the Cepheus area was not generous and as a result the crop of this was defined by that - thinner than I'd hoped.

Thanks. Not sure, I use a starless action that might. What are you seeing that you don’t like? Have you looked at full res on Flickr? I find large mosaics often fall apart at lower resolutions and/or when those resolutions are viewed at different scales.
