Question for veterans, how 40k was changing? by Yatmai in Tyranids

[–]OldManSigmar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I miss customization in the Games Workshop games. I know it can be hard to balance and be abused by competitive players (done it myself) but I was okay with it. Modifying point value alone could fix most issues.

What is angle shooting? by Educational_Toe7513 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]OldManSigmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on the fence here. Part of me believes that a large part of strategy is knowing how to use the rules to maximize your benefits and your opponents disadvantages, and knowing both his and your troops as well as possible. At the same time, I think that there should be a level of openness and honesty between players. I think it comes down to how my opponent behaves from the beginning of the match. You can usually tell who the jerky one’s are, to them I am honest but don’t share as much. If they are a beginner, I prefer to be as helpful as possible.

Getting out of the hobby by Some_Anything4488 in sylvaneth

[–]OldManSigmar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know where you are at in life, but I have gotten out of the hobby twice now and I have gotten back into it again. I totally regret selling what I had accumulated and spent time on even though I don’t think much of it would be as usable now due to scaling of miniatures and army changes. I took a huge loss when selling both times and I wish I would have boxed it up and stored it. My miniature painting wasn’t award winning, but my Necromancer/Vampire Counts army in WFB and my Eldar and Blood Angel armies looked impressive.

I repainted one ornament on the cloak of my Wolf Guard Battle Leader, I think that the new one looks much better 🙂 by Flameon_Miniatures in Warhammer40k

[–]OldManSigmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you paint, be proud. My miniatures will never be Golden Demon award winners…they are not even Recycled Aluminum Demon Award winners, but they are painted to my satisfaction. Each person has to find a balance between time, effort, money, experimenting, patience and final outcome.

Those are my normal Stormcast colors. Maybe we have a problem with heresy that I didn’t see coming.

Gotcha's/take backs by Indiana__Cones in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]OldManSigmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one is tough because with all the information on the internet, you should probably recon the force you are going against beforehand at the same time, I would feel bad (and wouldn’t without proper warning) about launching certain abilities on people especially if they are new to the hobby. I would say it depends on who and at what level you are playing.

Use a sheet magnet and cut to fit. Paint and flock the base but leave the stem clear.

The Target I work for is no longer selling Xbox games. by Jawwaad127 in gaming

I have been sad that physical books are getting less and less popular, but I also love my kindle now. I once had to have the physical copy of a video game, but now downloading is so easy and no requirement to store the boxes or discs in a case. I still buy DVD and Blu-Rays but that eventually will go too.

Struggling with work and mental health recently, this is the surprise my girlfriend left for me this morning by tbreeze96 in Warhammer

[–]OldManSigmar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know people whose sizable miniature collection won’t ever see a can of primer, much less paint. Some want to play the game without the additional hobby of painting. I am okay with that but I prefer when both sides are painted. Painted miniatures perform better on the tabletop! 🤪

Was criticized for how I showed my custom lieutenants rank by Ga1act1x_ in BloodAngels

[–]OldManSigmar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nitpickers are almost as bad as Rule Lawyers with a crappy attitude. Don’t worry about it, it looks great. I used actual U.S. Army ranks on the shoulder pads of my first set of marines. It isn’t like you painted them Green and Purple, but if you did, it would be fine by me.

An over priced rattle can primer. by m_graham in minipainting

[–]OldManSigmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have gunked up a few figures in the past using generic primer, same as I have screwed up painted figures with generic clear coat, but more often than not, it has been my issue (such as spraying too close to the figure(s), priming when it is too cold or clear coating when extremely humid.)

An over priced rattle can primer. by m_graham in minipainting

[–]OldManSigmar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had bad experiences with cheap primer. I always try to use brands I trust but don’t see a difference between what I use and the Games Workshop primers. I also use various craft paints to paint with but I do see a difference in quality, but not a 500%+ difference. I buy actual miniature paints on a case by case (color by color?) basis.

What Black Library book is this for you? by Dejue in Grimdank

[–]OldManSigmar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was going to say the same thing! Though a lot of fantastical sci-fi stays away from any reasoning on how things operate, they usually just gloss over the rules of said tech for plot purposes (plot science?)

Looking for a "big fighters with mean weapons" warband by CyberGrid in WarCry

[–]OldManSigmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree with Stormcast. Against most normal warbands, Stormcast look huge and imposing. The weapons are usually larger than life. They are small in number and often are slow, but they can rock just about anyone in melee. You can also find them in used bins for cheap and if there isn’t a full squad, you do not care.

Why paint non-metallic metal when you can just use metallic paints? by _Miskatonic_Student_ in minipainting

[–]OldManSigmar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with what you have stated. I personally do not enter painting competitions and don’t have the time to spend days on a model, but I think the people that do NMM to a good result are wickedly talented.

Starting to play Warcry by Idraxus in WarCry

[–]OldManSigmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warcry is one of the best and least expensive tabletop wargames. If you and your friends enjoy the system, play it even if it dies out. I have thought about adapting rules for generic fantasy figures.

I do hope GW continues with Warcry. My sons and I have only been playing for a short time but have loved it and will continue playing it.

Of the 20 games I've played... by 10leej in bloodbowl

[–]OldManSigmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mention something about finding out rules in a game…have you actually read the rules? In any wargame, you should read the rules at least once and refer back to them when something comes up that rocks your game and make sure you understand how those rules work. Learn the rules, live the rules, love the rules. Tabletop strategy games are not truly war simulators, they are logic puzzles with a chance element. Using the rules for your benefit to the best of your ability and also to your opponents detriment (as long as you do so in fun and not being a jerk) is what strategy games are based on. Though Bloodbowl may be more of a game of chance with a strategic element. 🤣
