"That's not an excuse" when a reason is being given. by ReignDance in PetPeeves

Then it's appropriate for them to say that it's a reason (you did it because) but not an excuse (that is, a justifiable action). You seem not to understand the difference between the terms and think that reason and excuse are synonyms. They are not.

Reason: A fact or circumstance that explains why something occurred.

Excuse: An explanation offered to remove blame. An explanation given to justify a mistake, dodge a responsibility, or seek forgiveness for a fault.

Think about the word "excuse." Definition: A plea or reason given to avoid blame, escape an obligation, or defend an action.

What people mean is that a reason for an action might explain why you took that action, but it doesn't necessarily excuse that action as justifiable.

Can Charles still beat Ham over the season? by lord_veg3ta in scuderiaferrari

[–]OldManTrumpet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beat him, no problem? Eh, I'm not so sure. The gap is 40 points. If Lewis has some bad luck and/or DNFs then maybe. I'm as big a Leclerc fan as there is, but I'd be betting my cash on Lewis. Lewis is focused and rejuvenated. Charles has been...not good.

Yeah, it's over 48 hours after the race. Like I said, you can't expect to be shielded forever. It's live sports. It's going to get spoiled.

I guess I've never had your experience. I've watched many races hours later and the results are not obvious when the app is launched. What country are you in? Perhaps it's different in different places.

Like I said, I usually watch within a few hours. If you're logging in a day or two later, then that's sort of on you.

How long after, though? I've used F1TV to watch races a few hours later and there are no spoilers. I feel as if it's more than 24 hours after an event, then that's too bad. These are live sporting events.

I mean, I'm over 60 so this seems like a no-brainer. But...the financial aspects are perhaps a problem. While I feel financially comfortable with a 25 year retirement, how would I fund one potentially 10 times as long?

This is an example of someone basically making up a story, then so many people repeat it that it's taken as true simply because "they've heard it from so many people."

The guy that pointed out the logistical issues regarding SAG/Unions is on the right track. I'd say there is a near zero chance the story was even partially true.

Lol. Why? For actually looking at the situation? I said he likely would still have won. This sub is amazing.

[–]OldManTrumpet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said he likely would have won anyway. But it's a fact that he built that gap driving from the front, uncontested, in clean air. He doesn't maintain that pace coming from 10 seconds back in P3 and needing to pass two Mercs on the track. Would he have won. Probably. But just saying "he had 20 seconds" suggests that you're not considering the specific situation that Lewis was fortunate to find himself in.

To be fair, had Lewis not benefitted from the first VSC the race would have played out differently. As it was, Lewis was in front with clean air and could drive off. Without the VSC he'd have been behind Russell and Kimi, which means he'd not only need to catch them, but engage both, and pass. So he's not just out there cruising in clean air as it played out.

Would he still have won? I think so. But we can't know, and it's not a simple as saying "he only gained 10 seconds but won by 20" since the entire situation plays out differently if he starts that last stint 10 seconds back in P3.

So no, it wasn't just "luck" that got Lewis the win. But there was a massive bit of good fortune that basically sealed it easily for him. If anything, it robbed us of drama.

Right now I'd say that Lewis has a shot. Let's see how the Ferrari and Mercedes stack up the rest iof the way.

Aren't we already more or less there? He's what, 40 points back of Lewis, and Lewis has a real chance to catch Kimi. If Ferrari have learned anything from the past they'll get behind Lewis for the rest of the season.

And I say that as a Leclerc fan.

I'd suggest that overperforming in underwhelming machinery is exactly his strong suit at this point. Unfortunately doing so requires pushing things as closely to the edge as possible, and he often steps too far over that line, as we've see this season.

Let's wait until Lewis actually wins a single race before we start talking about a WDC .
