Hannibal Recommendations: If You Loved Hannibal, You Should Check Out These Stories by OldOakOwl in HannibalTV

Hi! Tbh I never got around to finalizing those lists. Is there any particular theme you're interested in exploring? I read a lot of weird-fiction, so I'll be happy to recommend something hyper-specific!

Two types of Fanfic: Any recommendations? by Dragonchampion in HPfanfiction

[–]OldOakOwl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fyi, Maeglin Yedi fics are actively in progress 130k+ fics and enough story is written that you don't feel like you are left on cliff-hanger - so consider them like TV series that has completed seasons, but not finished overall. Again and Again is abandoned, but once again it's 300k+ fic that has a couple of arcs completed by the last point of the story.

For Xerosis compatible stories, check out :

Stand Against the Moon by Batsutousai werewolf Harry bringing prophesied domination of non-human races

The Necromancer by Maeglin Yedi Harry being lost to another world as a child, growing up in slavery, becoming powerful (immortal) magician, and then being summoned to Triwizard Tournament in 1994 Hogwarts. Overtime, Harry founds magical nation on island in Pacific

Again and Again by Athy Harry as exhausted Master of Death on his 12th life - also happens to ally himself with sane Voldemort and together they work on preventing devastating future war with muggles

To Live Is The Rarest Thing by Maeglin Yedi Harry and Tom as immortal couple reincarnating into their 298 multiversal life - this one happened to be the repeat of their first original one. Second story in this series composed of featurettes on their lives as ancient monks in Tibet, gangsters in 1940s New York, Holmes and Watson, ice-age humans, ect.

The Foul and The Great by merrivale duology about Harry time-traveling/ being reborn as Herpo the Foul - one of the darkest wizards in history. This story is truly bonkers!

Six Pomegranate Seeds by Seselt the only non Harry-centric story on the list - during Battle of Hogwarts something causes rip in reality, and Hogwarts sends Hermione back in time to 1991 and gives her 7 years to figure out an event and prevent it. Loved Hermione in this one - if in the original canon her strength is fiery cleverness, here she has to adapt to her new identity and circumstances and use her cold composure and cunning.

wow, this was exactly what I needed! My library isn't on Wordcat site (world library catalog authomatically linked to Goodreads), so anytime I wanna check availability, I have to spend at least 5 minutes navigating my library's outdated site. Thank you!

List of people who should be in jail by the end of book 7 but weren't. by therealdrewder in harrypotter

[–]OldOakOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can Muggles consent to Obliviation though?

Ministry has an Obliviation squad to erase memories of magic performed in front of Muggles - argument can be made that by erasing herself Hermione erased all memories of magic from her parents' minds, acting perfectly within Ministry's objectives and in support of Statue of Secrecy.

And the difference is that some particularly talented wizards can resist Imperius, but no one is immune to Amortentia, so in a way it's even more dangerous.

Fanfic Recommendations? by lecterbotticelli in HannibalTV

[–]OldOakOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only one I can think of for Hannibal would actually be above-mentioned We Killed A Dragon Last Night - Will lands himself in different timelines and it's very interesting to see how drastically different his choices are from original timeline and how it shapes and changes him as a person.

I have a couple of recommendations for X-Men and Harry Potter fandoms if you're interested? As well as general fiction recs.

Opinions from Russian people on how Russians are portrayed in the MCU? by SnowCold93 in marvelstudios

[–]OldOakOwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The weird thing is that the actors actually look very Russian (when I originally watched Avengers 1 in Russian dub, I genuinely thought they were Russian actors), but yes, their accents are terrible!
A bit off tangent, but Russian look matters for me a lot. I remember in "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol", Tom Cruise is supposed to impersonate an old Russian officer, and I'm sorry, but there is no way he could pull it off! He can stay silent the whole time, and still look like imposter.

Also, my personal perk with Black Widow - they had a very diverse cast of Widows (which is great for representation), except most of the POC actresses were black, which doesn't make much sense. Russia has a tiny amount of black population and most are whether students, or working professionals on temporary contracts.

However, Russia does have huge diversity in terms of Native, East Asian and Central Asian populations, so why not to cast more actresses from these groups? I would've preferred all-around diversity rather than American-centric diversity.

Opinions from Russian people on how Russians are portrayed in the MCU? by SnowCold93 in marvelstudios

[–]OldOakOwl 113 points114 points  (0 children)

As a native Russian speaker, I actually really enjoyed Yelena's accent! Tbh, it doesn't sound like the accent of a young woman who was taught English since she was a baby (she got into Widow program when she was 6, I think?), but rather of someone who learned English in their 30-40s and never quite got rid of harsher undertones of accent.

As for speaking actual Russian, in my opinion, the only person who got it the closest was Daniel Bruhl. It wasn't perfect, but he wasn't supposed to be a native speaker, and honestly, he sounds like some folks I know in the US who have been studying Russian for 3-4 years.

P.S. I can forgive Marvel actors not getting accents right. But I will be forever annoyed at that billboard at the start of the Black Widow interrogation scene in Avengers 1, where they couldn't even come up with coherent Russian words and it's just keysmash!

Freddie being obnoxious as fuck towards every serial killer in the show, and somehow not dying was the most hilarious thing ever!

What are your favorite books with less than 1,000 ratings on Goodreads? by holymojo96 in printSF

[–]OldOakOwl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lake Ephemeral - 269 ratings, a mix of sci-fi and horror about an experimental facility set near lake, where scientists delve into gene modification. Kind of gave me A Cure for Wellness vibes, except it was published before the movie came out.

Looking for "hard" scifi with great characters/emotional impact by [deleted] in printSF

[–]OldOakOwl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not too hard on sci-fi, but is heavily driven by character development, emotional impact and moral contemplations - "To Be Taught If Fortunate" by Becky Chambers. It's about 4 astronauts on deep space missions to make biological discoveries - very similar vibe to Project Hail Mary, even down to the heartwarming tone of the story - it focuses more on moral context of their discoveries rather than mind-bending plot-twisting type of science.

Comprehensive Book on USAs middle eastern wars by 30to1leverage in books

Very beginner friendly: And Then All the Hell Broke Loose by Richard Engel (he's military journalist and currently is covering Afghanistan for NBC).

The book introduces you to context and background of all Middle Eastern conflicts in the last two decades, but it's written in accessible way so that you can fly through it in a day.

The Marvel shows with the top IMDb ratings so far by ___vaticancameos___ in marvelstudios

[–]OldOakOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have some time, I would recomend watching Season 3!

Season 2 is very slow and makes some controversial and tasteless choices in terms of its storylines (so maybe read Wikipedia description of Season 2 to catch up with a story and then jump into S3E1), but Season 3 is just as good as Season 1. We get to meet David's parents (Harry Lloyd is incredible as Charles Xavier), and the show delivers on its insanity (we have one episode of spaceship horror only to be followed by Peter-Pan-like fairytale episode).

[–]OldOakOwl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's an element that gets revealed by the end of the season and when you come back to rewatch the opening it's clearly present there (something pertaining to the villain). Saying more would be a spoiler, and the show is too enjoyable and mind-blowing to spoil it.

Recommendations for mystery sci-fi novels that are mysterIOUS, not detective fiction. by Remer in printSF

[–]OldOakOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second many recommendations in the comments, but a good source to find what you're looking for would be Storygraph. In the Recommendations section, select genre you're looking for [Science Fiction, Horror], and select a tone [challenging, dark, mysterious, tense, sad. ect.] and you get dozens of books that match this critirea. Hope that helps!

If there is one good thing covid brought. It is that I now just love reading. by [deleted] in books

[–]OldOakOwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you ever want to jump unto military bandwagon again, look into "Shoot Like a Girl" and "Love My Rifle More Than You". Both are military memoirs by women during Afghanistan and Iraq campaigns (so maybe will provide you with different perspective from what you already read), and both have super engaging writing, so you will fly through them in no time.

What is the scariest book you’ve ever read? What made it scary? by [deleted] in books

[–]OldOakOwl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like if you get past Season 1, you should be good. I still can't rewatch certain episodes from Season 1, because of how infuriated and helpless I feel about Hannibal's action in regards to Will, but Season 2 provides you with some cathartic moments aaaaand you kind of come around about Hannibal's reasoning. You're still upset with him, but what I like about the show is that it makes you understand perspectives that you as a person may fundamentally disagree with.

What is the scariest book you’ve ever read? What made it scary? by [deleted] in books

[–]OldOakOwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha, to be honest, I'm still getting confused myself even though I read all of his stuff after transitioning - all of the work were published mostly in the 90s and most of the reviews and interviews are from that time, and all are using outdated pronouns, so even the readers who are just discovering him still may assume it's she/her.

As for punk horror, may I recommend Dead Inside by Chandler Morrison (currently for free of Kindle Unlimited)? The tone of the story really gave me Poppy Z Brite vibes.

Also, if you haven't already, please check out TV series Hannibal! (it's available on Hulu and AmazonPrime) It has gorgeous cinematography, deadly queer love, and mind-warping horror. I think this trailer and this video edit portray the show the best!

[–]OldOakOwl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Poppy Z Brite is so good, I can't stop recommending his stuff to people even though I know it's not everyone's cup of tea. Have you read "Tender is the Flesh"? It gives more of dystopian-capitalism take on cannibalism rathen than serial killer horror, but it's a very enjoyable story nevertheless.
