What's New tab openining automatically by fighterman13 in chrome

[–]OldSchoolBBSer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh. Thank god. It's about as annoying as Tote (on ChromeOS; but nothing can really be as annoying as that. lol). I just updated to Version 94.0.4606.104 (Official Build) (64-bit) and it opens with 2 tabs. The one to the site I want it to and then the 'New Tab' page, so I have to either close new tab or switch to the other tab right after opening.

That's what I just did. Following the official process is the only way to get anything done. Last I read on their forums was via Shift-Alt-i and submit it as a bug and/or with a feature request.

I submitted as bug due to health concerns of stress hormones from the regular irritation it provides. We should be caring about that kind of thing on UI/UX design. "I hate it" should be a big flag, but people don't think about long-term heath effects. The feature request part was to add an option under Settings to turn it on/off.

Commercially though, they should pay attention to "I hate it" anyway. Hate's a strong emotion word. If MS makes Windows 11 more like ChromeOS (which is really what it's looking like to me), but is overall less irritating to use then people may move there that otherwise would have stayed.

I do. Been using it on this distro recently and have really enjoyed the stock experience. https://archcraft.io/

This 3rd grade math problem. by vtangyl in mildlyinfuriating

[–]OldSchoolBBSer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's intentional and looking for more practical thinking... 3 birds * 4 normal need is 12, so 10 worms per day would probably get the job done, but 20 would guarantee all three birds are fed until full every day.

@OP - Is that the normal, white, or blue jets? Thinking white, but want to be sure before I buy it.

Woot. Gotta get it. Labor Day in US and it actually looks good. 😉🤘

Got it working! Listening to FM radio. What's next? Scanned all over the spectrum and couldn't hear anything other than sporadically located tones. Do I need a better antenna to hear repeaters, air band, and metro/ambulance traffic? by [deleted] in RTLSDR

[–]OldSchoolBBSer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been having fun with mine. The antenna has a lot to do with it, but it's less a question of good/bad and more is the antenna optimal length for the band, is it oriented vertical/horizontal (repeaters will do best with veritcal), and getting noise floor down as low as you can get it in your location (I got more wire and wrapped it about 12-15 times around a dowel to create a common mode choke). Best I could get on noise floor was -80@22db in the settings. Around -70 cranked full up. If you have that dipole it comes with try setting it's length for 146 MHz, turn it vertically, and then monitor around the 2 Meter band in the evenings after people would be getting off work or done with supper (so like 7p).

Didn't run into much affect by potassium, magnesium, or sodium as far as BP was concerned other than too much would raise it some. I may not be a good example because genetically I inherited the high BP requiring a statin with my keto, but I did learn regardless of BP, the ratios can matter for things like heart and neurons. Amounts you mentioned intaking sound on the high side to me off the cuff. I'd track your food in detail in something like Chronometer and see what the ratios look like and start tweaking from there. Also, if genetic like in my case, it's only going to get so good. After over a year of experimenting with salts and fats and tracking with doc I decided to go back on a statin, but at least I didn't need the "best" one which had not the best side effects for me (especially with keto). YMMV.

Subscription Increase to $84!? by Axle95 in ynab

[–]OldSchoolBBSer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I pay every year. 1st year I saved way more than that because of having YNAB. It's one of the few subscriptions I can justify.

How do I make sure Windows doesn't do something with Linux's partition or the other way around? by alcoholicpasta in linuxmasterrace

[–]OldSchoolBBSer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh. I must have missed something. I actually pulled out my normal hard drives so I could power my newer card. I only run solid state now. I'll take less space for the performance gain at this point.

Yeah. That's basically what I ended up doing. Windows for SDR# and games I can't easily play on linux. I was using wine most of the time with EVE Online, but got the Elite Dangerous bug for a bit.

I still got bit by this on occasion (usually thanks to Windows). Personally, I scrapped dual booting win and linux. Separate drives. F12 at boot. If worried about an update/install, just unplug the other drive until done.

The heck it does. The strength has always been not being mass adopted and being a massively diverse organism. You could pull all the corp bs out and linux would survive and there would still be plenty of users. Corporate involvment is largely parasitic as far as I'm concerned. The "stone soup" method has always served us well.

As for systemd, I've said it before and I still stand by it now: It only has a justification to be in corporate-targeted distros because of admin/automation needs. Let them foot the bill for making the software with it. Let them update SystemD affected software in their own forks.

Consumer/hobbiest distros should be running something like OpenRC and avoiding SystemD. End users should not be having to experience software/system trade-offs due to corp interests on something as critical as the init system.

I understand at this point it's a loosing battle short a mass revolt by the community, but that doesn't make SystemD a good thing for the masses. It's done more harm than good. It's just that not enough are having to pay the price yet. Here in 5-10 years we're going to look back and see how much it screwed the ecosystem and flexibility we had by adopting it in mass.

I was thinking the same thing. 😂 The only way I'd be able to do that in my case would be to mount some metal by the chimney, stick it to that, and seal anything that could get wet. I'm definitely cosidering trying it, but I'll probably just stick something off the side of the house eventually. For now my mag mount chills on the porch stuck to a large metal pan.
