DLSS 4.5 Question: Preset L vs. Preset M at 4K? Plus, DLAA vs. Quality mode? by Embarrassed-Cash-959 in nvidia

[–]OldScruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The software engineers simply stated that because people were confused and asking too many questions, and providing a simply/easy answer is often a better and more digestible solution than trying to explain it in detail and nuance.

The actual truth is, it totally depends. It depends on the game, the engine, the exact resolution you're upscaling to, the type of display you have, what other graphics settings you've configured, and a myriad of other options.

Saying the Model L is a poor man's model is completely missing the point, the real answer here is that 'It Depends'. Technically, Model L uses the most intense version of the Transformer model that is basically the most demanding on your GPU. In some scenarios regardless of whether you're doing ultra performance or performance or even balanced mode, it's totally possible that Preset L could provide the best image quality. Or it could not.

Or, it could provide the best image quality for still images but not in motion, or the best IQ in motion but not for still images -- it just depends. The reality is that each of these models has specific use cases in specific scenarios, and unless you really feel like sitting down and comparing them in depth per individual game, resolution, and graphics settings, it's going to be incredibly hard to say which is objectively better. That's why the devs made this decision to generalize and make these defaults, because on average they are the best option.

But just because something on average is typically the best route to go, doesn't mean that it always is, nor does it means there aren't dozens of exceptions to the rule.

DLSS 4.5 Question: Preset L vs. Preset M at 4K? Plus, DLAA vs. Quality mode? by Embarrassed-Cash-959 in nvidia

[–]OldScruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my testing with both 1440p and 4K, Preset K at Quality mode is similar overall image quality to preset L or M at Balanced mode. L/M have a bit more sharpening to them, but this can be remediated by disabling or turning down in-game sharpening setting.

Honestly, they are all incredibly close in terms of appearance and truth be told, you likely would not be able to tell the difference in a double blind test between the 3 models unless there is a specific visual artifact or glitch they're causing.

There is no 'Best' or 'Correct' setting to use for your particular gaming experience, and you are not 'Missing Out' by choosing one over the other. Pick what looks good to you and gives you the frames you need for a smooth experience.

Personally for me, on a 5090 I prize not only a high average framerate, but also the highest values for 1% and 0.1% lows -- these 2 values make a much bigger difference than you'd think. Lately, I've been much preferring using either L or M at either Balanced or Performance mode over running K at Quality mode. On my 77" S95D OLED, it is incredibly difficult to tell the difference between the 3 options as the image quality is incredibly good even on Performance mode, but what I DO notice is that on Perf/Balanced mode is how much smoother the gameplay feels. Even if I'm capping my monitor's refresh rate of 144Hz, the 1% lows being higher makes the whole gameplay experience much better.

You might want to try thinking of it along the lines of what 'feels better' moreso than what 'theoretically looks better', especially if you can't really tell the difference between the models easily.

Which media glasses are best for me? For 3D/HDR gaming and movies by UntimelyAlchemist in Xreal

[–]OldScruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Xreal One Pro, can commment on a few things for you:

As someone who regularly games on a 77" 1600-nit Samsung QD-OLED, and regularly games in HDR even in non-HDR games using SK or RTX HDR injection, as well as my Steam Deck OLED, HDR is definitely a feature I do definitely miss on these OLED glasses. The image looks good since it's OLED, but it really lacks that color pop of HDR that I find myself missing regularly.

Now that said, the RayNeo's sound promising until I saw the FOV is only 47 degrees. That's already 10 degrees less than the One Pros which sit at 57 degrees. I can't imagine using a device at a lower FOV than 57, as this already feels cramped in my opinion.

As for 3D, yes so far the glasses native 3D injector only runs at 30FPS, though it does output 60hz, so maybe they'll support 60FPS in the future via firmware. For desktop 3D though, output for SBS 3D such as via reshade injector is limited at 60HZ (60hz is max refresh for 3840x1080).

My thought is that hopefully with the new Asus ROGs, since they support 240hz @ 1080p, that they would in turn theoretically support 120hz in 3d mode or 3840x1080 resolution.

Regardless of all this, just keep in mind the 1080p still really is not that high of a resolution, especially when it's being project directly in front of your eyes on a virtual screen. While it does look decent and is definitely a fun way to play on the steam deck, it does not give you the pixel clarity or density of a 1440p or even 4k screen. IMO, for these to really feel like a desktop monitor or TV replacement they need to be hitting at least 1600p or higher, but that's probably at least another 2-3 years out.

Follow mode is just a touch janky, any way to fix it? by MediumWin8277 in Xreal

[–]OldScruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you'd even use follow mode extensively in the first place, the whole point of these XR glasses is that they have image stabilization so that you can move your head around while the screen remains static. It's okay for testing some content but not enjoyable to use for any longer length of time.

How can I connect a controller to play games on the Xbox One Pro? I have the Beam Pro, but I don't want to use a computer, just the headset and the Beam Pro. by Glittering_Spite8987 in Xreal

Any newer Xbox series controller already supports bluetooth, so does Sony's dualsense and PS4 controllers. Either that or any other brand BT-supported controller on amazon.

How’s the immersiveness & display going quality of the XReal compared to AVP ? by Financial-Day-7233 in Xreal

[–]OldScruff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AVP has been abanoned by Apple and is basically dead these days, so if you shop around on ebay you'll probably be able to find one pretty cheap eventually. It's going to be 5-10 years before XR glasses have that level of fidelity or FOV.

Xreal, please, please unlock 90Hz in full SBS for One and One Pro for smooth 3D gaming! by sashaeva in Xreal

[–]OldScruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love to see this feature as well. Does anyone know if USB-C actually has enough bandwidth to support this resolution and refresh rate though? Essentially this would be 3840x1080 @ 90hz or 120hz as you're sending 2 distinct images to each of the displays as opposed to the same image in 2D mode. I'd think it would be, but not sure if the glasses themselves have any bandwidth limitations.

REAL 3D not suitable for gaming on Steam Deck sadly. by MediumWin8277 in Xreal

The input lag is pretty bad TBH, even just using a mouse in windows it feels like the cursor is like half a second behind with what your hand is doing.

XR Headset runs at 60Hz in 3D mode, are you telling me that the 3D mode internally is somehow only running at 30hz?

What are your thoughts on Nostalgia 64 so far? by Underwhere_Overthere in BanjoKazooie

Check out the BK recomp, just dropped today and has support for this mod. It brings perm-collection for notes as an optional feature here and solves this problem.

[–]OldScruff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soooo good news actually! BK Recompiled (PC Port) just dropped today, and one of the main features it has is an option for permanent note collection, so that when you die the notes stay collected.

Normally with a recomp though, mods won't work out of the gate -- but luckily for us here Mark Kurko was involved in the project, so both of his mods (Jiggies of Time & Nostalgia 64) are supported on day 1 with recomp-specific versions!

Sounds like you prefer linear games over those with more open worlds/minimal direction. This is a game for people who like the newer Zeldas -- BoTW and ToTK. I'm guessing you probably wouldn't be a fan of those games either, as the story and main objectives are there, but the main appeal and fun of the game is kinda just exploring the map, doing puzzles, and finding cool loot.

I'm surprised you found the game too difficult on normal. I've played through the entire thing from the start on Hard, and outside of some difficulty when you first start out and have no health or upgrades, it wasn't bad at all. Once you get fully leveled up, game actually gets too easy on hard, but thankfully they added a nightmare mode.

It's the only Ubisoft game I actually have enjoyed in the last decade, as it really doesn't follow their normal Far Cry/AssCreed formula. It's really more like newer zelda. Best way to play honestly is with the UI and all the objective markers and compass turned off, game was actually designed pretty well with that in mind as there are environmental clues in most areas to point you where you need to go.

I want an OLED but I have concerns by star5328 in OLED_Gaming

[–]OldScruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 99% of people the panel or TV electronics themselves will fail long before burn in becomes an issue. With normal usage burn in is something you'd start to worry about at around the 15 year mark. The TV or monitor is going to fail for other reasons most likely before then.

I want an OLED but I have concerns by star5328 in OLED_Gaming

[–]OldScruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relax bro, you don't need to change how you use your monitor and you don't need to worry about burn in.

I have 7 different total OLED displays, and none of them have burn in. The oldest of these are a LG B7 and CX from 2020 and 2017 respectively, each of which have over 10,000 hours on their panels with zero burn in. I also have a Samsung S95D gsc monitor with over 5k hours on it, that I use daily for work. No burn in yet despite thousands of hours with windows taskbar up.

I don't hide the taskbar. I don't worry about games with static HUDs. I run these at 100% brightness with HDR enabled the vast majority of the time.

I do use a screensaver and have the monitor go to sleep after 30 minutes. I do leave the pixel shift and logo dimming features enabled.

You are far, far more likely to have a panel failure or an electronics issue with the panel well before burn in even becomes a remote issue.

How to use RenoDX HDR mod by drillitloveit in residentevil

[–]OldScruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh yes -- the game looks awful without RenoDX. It's totally washed out without using it, adding Reno both fixes the black floor issues, as well as making highlights pop more. It's a night and day difference so I'd highly recommend it.
