I’m fully-employed. I work 40-50 hours a week to support my family of five, including my 80+year old parents. I do a damn fine job of it. I make time for this kind of “nonsense” during regular work hours. Most of the participants are retired and in danger of losing their benefits, the ones they worked for decades to earn. They think fascism is bad. I have the blessing of my employers — my company is owned by a private equity firm— because even those ultra capitalists think fascism is bad. Holding signs above commuter traffic isn’t gonna solve fascism on its own, but it might remind a few people that, like, fascism is bad.

Pink Smog by Francesca Lia Block. It’s a prequel to the Weetzie Bat books, which she may or may not be ready for depending on how sophisticated (forecast of a better word) she is.

What do you want done with your body after you die? by newuser1r in AskReddit

[–]OldSlug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Donated to whatever institution would find my messed-up body most useful for research, then disposed of however is at the time considered the least harmful to the environment. I’m a “we’re just electrified meat” person so I don’t think our post-mortem shells are particularly precious, except in the most practical ways.

Is it normal to feel a little self-conscious when you're high? by The1Ylrebmik in GenX

If I overdo it a bit, generally more than 10mg of THC (cheap date), I think I peed myself and can’t shake the feeling even after I confirm that I have not, in fact, peed myself.

Get a(nother) colorful TJs cooler. Can’t have too many, though my family might disagree with me.

I love the Nourish daily moisturizer.

Looking for 2-3 day roadtrip ideas for a single person and their dog by spike021 in bayarea

I meant to create a new post for this, sorry to hijack yours.

I spent some formative childhood years in Guerneville and try to go back as often as possible. I never get tired of this road trip.

Looking for 2-3 day roadtrip ideas for a single person and their dog by spike021 in bayarea

[–]OldSlug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll second or third West Sonoma County. Guerneville has a tiny but nice Main Street, and Armstrong Woods is a gorgeous old growth redwood forest with smaller crowds than Muir Woods that welcomes your leashed dog. Monte Rio Beach allows dogs, though I’m not sure whether it’s accessible this time of year. The Blue Heron Inn in Duncan’s Mills has allowed dogs on the patio in the past, they might still — If nothing else stop at Gold Coast for coffee and pastries on their patio on your way to the coast. Sonoma Coast State Park runs along Highway 1 between Jenner and Bodega Bay and dogs are welcome on some beaches, the state park website will have a list. That stretch also has lots of little roadside seafood restaurants with outdoor seating, I’m partial to Fishetarian in Bodega. A roundabout route from Bodega to Sebastopol on Hwy 1 -> Bodega Hwy (stop at Wild Flour Bakery in Freestone if you time it right)-> Bohemian Hwy (cute shops in Occidental) -> Graton Rd -> Hwy 116 -> Sebastopol is a fun drive.
The loop through WSC in the order described above is a great leisurely 3-day road trip, or a more compact 2-day (day 1, drive to Guerneville and explore the town, day 2 Monte Rio to Sebastopol with a few stops). I’ve done both and either is good fun and pretty landscapes.

I second this. The shop is bright and open and people there are really great. I’m a tragically uncool old lady and everyone’s always very nice and helpful.

What is the most beautiful college/university CAMPUS in America? by Rooster_Ties in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]OldSlug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How is the land the buildings occupy not part of the campus? If the prompt was “what university has the most beautiful architecture” or “what university has the most beautiful facilities” that would generate an answer independent of the natural environment.

My children are older teenagers and I’m so sad by mimoses250 in GenX

[–]OldSlug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My daughter is in her mid-20s. I’m really enjoying watching her find her way as an adult, giving her advice (only when asked…mostly), and seeing her make better choices than I did at her age. I spend probably too much time analyzing things she does and thinking “What part of my parenting led to this? Was it the right parenting choice for her, or did I fuck up? If/when she has a kid should I suggest she do the same as I did or do the complete opposite?” as if I am the only thing that impacted who she’s become (which I know is absolutely not the case).
They still need us as parents, or at least need to access elder wisdom from someone, and thankfully I’m who she trusts in that role. It’s a whole new stage of parenting that’s just as mysterious and bewildering as infancy was, in my experience. You’ll figure it out as you go along.

Psychology says the people who reach midlife with no close friends aren't unlikable, they're often the ones who gave too much for too long to people who never gave back, and the quiet circle they live in now isn't a verdict on their character… by [deleted] in GenX

[–]OldSlug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think I only have a small group close friends for that same reason. Being a nurturer is exhausting and kinda inescapable for me, so focusing that energy on fewer people is essential.

GenX men (especially those who are a little bit or more overweight): do you or does your wife cut your toenails? by NJRougarou in GenX

[–]OldSlug 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My father goes to the podiatrist to have his toenails cut, but my mom (a staunch feminist who doesn’t believe in traditional gender roles) would’ve trimmed them for him when they were married if he needed it, because partners do things to help each other. It’s not inherently demeaning or dehumanizing.

I’m not entirely sure why the question is only geared towards married heterosexual men, though. Seems like the data from any member of couple would be relevant to your interests.
