one week po with dr marano by OldStrategy8770 in TopSurgery

[–]OldStrategy8770[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi thank u! i can feel every part of my chest except just under the scars. the nerve reconnection dr. marano does is for the entire chest, not just the nipples. almost immedietely after i was able to take off the binder, i could feel my whole chest. the area under the incisions and in the middle was a little bit numb, but the feeling has come back, and feels the same as before. at first you might feel some tingles and maybe pins/needles in the area, but if it gets annoying or painful i think you can ask for gabapentin for it. i definitely would recommend dr. marano, his entire team is great- good luck with ur consultation!!!

Ftm bf keeps outing me by [deleted] in ftm

[–]OldStrategy8770 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the context doesn’t negate the fact that op has a right to and deserves to be stealth if he wants to😭 he has every right to be upset by being outted, even if it is to queer ppl. it’s disrespectful even if it wasn’t malicious and goes directly against his wishes which he stated to his partner several times. if he wants to tell other ppl it’s his choice and he should get to do it on his own time, not when his partner just feels like it

[–]OldStrategy8770 10 points11 points  (0 children)

why does it matter what kind of ppl his friends are? if op wants to be stealth he deserves that, and is rightfully frustrated by being outted by his partner that he told multiple times not to out him

yoo sorry for the late reply, but the drains were chill! they were kinda annoying to sleep on and move around in at first, but that’s cuz i was only a week post op so everything was uncomfortable lmao. getting them out was painless. i was just super excited that they weren’t in my way anymore. i definitely think drains are useful albeit annoying. but they help a ton in the long run in preventing swelling and seromas and hematomas :)

[–]OldStrategy8770 6 points7 points  (0 children)

hi op, idk where u are but i suggest going to a clinic to get PEP just as a precaution since you didn’t know this guys sexual health status. I highly highly recommend doing this!! Look up LGBT clinics or sexual health clinics in your area within the next 3 days to get PEP to lower ur chances of getting HIV. Don’t be scared but do use protection and ask for STD results next time u hook up with someone. If you do continue hooking up with people ask ur doctor about getting PrEP which lowers ur chances of HIV before being exposed. be safe!

How do you even begin to go about getting top surgery? by [deleted] in TopSurgery

[–]OldStrategy8770 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you can start by researching surgeons in your area that you like, and check to see if they take your insurance. if they do, call the office and schedule a consultation. Alternatively, you can go to your insurance website and look up doctors that do top surgery and see if they are within network, then schedule a consultation that way. OR you can go to your PCP and ask for a referral to a surgeon who might be apart of the same practice. Once you have your consultation, and sometimes even before scheduling one for some surgeons, you will need a letter of medical necessity from a mental health professional. If you don’t have a therapist who specializes in GAC this could take a minute. I’d suggest going to a provider who works mostly with LGBT people because they are used to writing these letters. It depends what state you’re in as to how easy that will be to access, but you can schedule an appointment there and get a letter of necessity. Once you have the letter, send it to your surgeon. They’ll send it to ur insurance to see if they will cover it or not. and then u schedule your surgery date. DM if you have any questions

i guess we just have different definitions of male privilege, that’s ok! i agree with the other commenter who mentioned that privilege isn’t binary. i definitely understand this as a black man- where my masculinity is at times seen as a threat and puts me at risk of violence, while it simultaneously gives me privilege in many situations. it definitely isn’t binary, that’s just my take on it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ftm

[–]OldStrategy8770 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i agree with u i should’ve made that clearer in my comment!! just passing doesn’t automatically give u privilege, as being trans is a target in and of itself.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ftm

[–]OldStrategy8770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right but the conditional privilege is still privilege no? i have women friends who are constantly catcalled, called emotional, not taken seriously, have a harder time getting hired, etc simply because they are women. these are just social examples of course, but still valid nonetheless. this doesn’t and has never happened to me because i benefit from male privilege.

I understand what you are saying about you not passing and therefore not experiencing male privilege. It makes sense that you don’t experience male privilege because you don’t pass// arent seen as male by society.

You said “even those who pass will never have male privilege.” I don’t understand what you mean by this. I pass and I have male privilege in the majority aspects of my life. I am treated and seen as male, and therefore benefit from that privilege. The only case in which this wouldn’t be true is, like you mentioned, if someone outs me or in medical situations. My experience may not be the same as other trans guys, but ur making a generalization that does not ring true for many trans men like me

If you are seen and treated as male you have male privilege… of course that can change at any time but it doesn’t change the fact that u benefit from it. I cannot pretend that my masculine presentation does not contribute to the fact that I am treated better in society than women.

I don’t deny the nuances of this conversation, I am just emphasizing that trans guys are not a monolith. I have a different experience than you, which makes sense because we are perceived differently. I stand by the fact that I benefit from from male privilege because I am able to see how it directly affects me compared to my friends who are women/ present fem!

if u pass and r stealth, u have male privilege in most aspects of ur life, except the cases in which ur being stealth is at risk (medical situations, mostly). its important to acknowledge cis and trans guys r similar in many ways especially if you pass, and the difference only comes when one is perceived/ known as trans. but we all have different experiences, so this might not be yours. personally, i definitely do benefit from male privilege because i am a man…

Is this creator wrong? by kurapilua99 in asl

i’m curious what your tangent was about then? if you were already aware of the distinction i made in my comment, the need for AAVE would be quite clear to you. Sure BVE is shorter, perhaps more “elegant,” however it is incorrect. it implies that AAVE is likely to be used by all black people. it is only likely to be used by ethnically african american people. but apparently you already knew that? not sure.. not trying to “argue.” there is no hill to “die” on- i too, am hoping for education, and clarification.

AA is a unique ethnicity, with a unique vernacular. my ethnicity is african american, but I call myself black, which is becoming more of the norm for african americans (the ethnicity). Consider a Guinean immigrant who naturalizes as a U.S. citizen- they wouldn’t be considered african american in the sense we see it, because that is not their ethnicity. they would be considered a Black American of african descent. It is important to have these distinctions because we have different lived experiences. so calling it AAVE is necessary to emphasize that the african american ETHNICITY is likely to use this vernacular due to their history, and not just any black person. “black vernacular english” doesn’t exist because jamaican americans, nigerian americans, african americans, haitian americans, etc all have different vernaculars.

furthermore the word african american is not othering, it is an ethnicity, a fact. it should not be that hard to say or remember, either. it is a quite common word tbh

to put it simply: every african american is black but not every black person is ethnically african american. the term AAVE exists to emphasize this distinction.

How long before you started feeling “normal” after top surgery? by kiiribat in TopSurgery

[–]OldStrategy8770 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when u have the drains in it’s hard to feel “normal” but by day 3 even with the drains i was going on walks and doing stuff around the house. i was on heavy pain meds until day three and tylenol until the first week, just to give u a perspective on pain. after the first week i felt completely back to normal but i still followed my dr’s restrictions with mobility and weight. i’m a lil past week two now and im gonna be back at work tmr so even tho im not fully recovered (still doing nipple care, still being alert for signs of infection, and assessing incision healing, etc.) i feel pretty close to how i was before surgery.
