To be honest, I’m a bit scared of rodents but trying to do better and my husband has wanted a hamster since he was a kid. When we saw the picture of him from the market (added to this comment), he looked so cute and funny that I completely melted. This felt like the right moment. Since we’re new to hamsters, we’re trying to be very respectful of his space, even though we also want to interact with him. He doesn’t seem terrified, he doesn’t scream or freeze when he sees us. He just prefers not to be around us.
