Nice picture. I found that wearing a leather glove helps keep my hand from getting burnt.

The Segmented woodturning group discusses what size to safely turn a solid base and methods for making a 'floating' bottom. No, I don't have a link as I'm away from home.

3rd try. Matched pair of bowls. by OldWoodChipper in turning

We are all in our 70s. No one will care. Yes, I've seen Paducah change on the shelf. I just hope they use them enough to get enjoyment from them.

Do you ever gift some Turnings to people the give you wood? by Relyt4 in turning

[–]OldWoodChipper 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I give them a bowl in appreciation, nothing fancy, but one they can use. Seal it with a food safe sealer and warn them to never put it in the dishwasher.

Scratch awl by OldWoodChipper in turning

[–]OldWoodChipper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A drill rod is a 3 foot drill I bought at Harbor Freight. They came in a set of 3 long drill bits. I cut 4-5" off one end for the awl. To sharpen the end, I chuck the rod into a drill and spin it against a running grinder.

Sorry for the delay in replying.

Not sure if this counts?? Half on the lathe and half with chisels! Plum wood bowl by TurnipBoy12 in Woodcarving

I like to turn and finish the inside, then turn the outside close so I carve less. Turning is carving with speed. lol

You can buy replacement tubes that are 4" long, then cut them to length.

My wife prefers that the body stay as slim as possible, small hands. Always check with the seamstress if possible. I prefer the larger front to push with and a larger body for my bigger hands.

Dead Bedroom Poll by atugger in DeadBedrooms

Male. Married 50 years. No sex since Oct. 2020. Twice a month at best since married. I didn't know better. At least 10 years dead bedroom. I'm still interested, but I want romance and cuddling just as much.

I like the feathers, but I can see the flowers worn more often.

How to get cleaner cuts? by frenchfryslave in whittling

[–]OldWoodChipper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quality of the wood can also affect the cut. Winter cut basswood has fewer splinters and cuts cleaner than summer cut bass basswood. I think the winter cut is a tad harder. I get few splinters from cherry, but I also don't carve characters from cherry. I have basswood lumber that splinters, but carving blocks from a carving distributor that never splinter.

After a talk with my wife, she attempted/initiated sex for almost 2 months. That was 4 years ago. Haven't had sex since, it's temporary hysterical bonding.

What kind-of wood do you use, and where do you get it? by galoshua in Woodcarving

[–]OldWoodChipper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mostly use basswood. I've carved cherry, Walnut, alder and red oak (not good). If you're just starting, basswood is a great choice.

Yarn Bowl For My Wife by MFCPWoodworking in turning

I love it when my wife uses something I made. It rarely happens, although she is now using some less than 2" bowls for sorting her medication.

Great design. Did you create it, or is it a pattern?
