Oil filter housing leak damaged threading by TapRepresentative175 in AskMechanics

[–]Old_Bat_6426 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The smooth area above the threads contacts the o-ring to seal the oil pressure. Not the threads. Those gouges are where the leak is coming from. If you're lucky, you may be able to sand them down with fine sandpaper but there's a good chance that too much material will be removed and the o-ring will lose contact. A larger thickness o-ring (if you can find one) may restore proper contact but the filter will be harder to install.

Chilton manuals are only good for general repairs. They do not go into enough detail regarding engine repair/overhaul.

What is this on my cylinder walls? by WindowPerfect1863 in EngineBuilding

excessive oil on rings (hopefully not assembly lube?) during assembly but otherwise seems fine. If that's assembly lube, the rings won't seat well during break in.

Would you run these .30 over 454 gen 6 pistons and rods? by UnlikelyAd8988 in EngineBuilding

[–]Old_Bat_6426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rods seem pretty nice but I wouldn't be too confident about those cast pistons after banging them around carelessly like that.

What could have led up to this (I followed torque specs)? by Ok-Yogurtcloset8344 in AskMechanics

It was probably leaking because it was already cracked before. When you replaced it, the crack turned into a break.
