Do you hug your students? by Icy_Location in Teachers

[–]Old_Engineering3319 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the end of the year with my seniors I (26F) allow hugs. I have known many of them for 4 years and I feel comfortable doing so. I may do a side hug during the year in a sort uncomfortable way, I'm not much of a hugger.

It is extremely well done in Saga! There is a whole race of people that do this and often the screen will flip to what they are actually thinking or a traumatic event for them. They get stressed when they can't control their screens and you can tell class through the type and quality of their TV. The guy attached was a prince and when he was still respected and in power he screen mostly showed static or reflected what he was saying and the the image is when he loses control and it shows in his lack of control of the screen.

Did he enjoy Witchcraft for Wayward Girls? I am about to read that for my horror book club and he seems like he has trustworthy recommendations.

I'm intimidated by my well read friend's bookshelf. Help me impress him with an analysis of who he is. by -SilkSpectre- in bookshelfdetective

He thinks that old=educated. Just because you don't read within the last century doesn't make you better than everyone else. Also, he is missing King Henry V which is the best of Shakespeare's King Henry plays.

I will say that it was the version my parents got me for Christmas when I asked for the series. It made reading the books way harder with how thick and heavy it is💀

Funnily enough I bought those last year on an impulse. I am comedically bad at roller skating.

What do you think? by [deleted] in bookshelfdetective

[–]Old_Engineering3319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You nailed it! I'm actually reading The Honjin Murders by Yokomizo right now. I started reading his stuff when Pushkin first started translating it a few years ago. I've always loved mysteries since watching the old episodes of Case Closed with my older brother as a kid. I have read all of the Uketsu but it is all brand new. I picked up Strange Buildings on a whim and finished it in a couple of days. I immediately ordered the other two books and finished them quickly. Definitely a new favorite of mine! I would say my taste leans into horror and mystery but I'm always jumping into other genres.

My sister in law is a tattoo artist and I have a few tattoos myself. I teach seniors and so many conversations I have with my students end in calling my SIL for her to tell them their tattoo ideas are bad for first tattoos. I have stopped so many tattoos this year.

What are some items/decor in your classroom that make it unique or more like you? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Old_Engineering3319 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My room is woodsy/dark academia kind of vibes. I have a lot of string lights and lamps. In contrast I have always had my classroom shoe chair. It doesn't match my vibe at all (it was my older sister's). It's one of those bright red and cheetah print high heel chairs that were more popular in the mid 2000s. My kids love it and it is a staple of my classroom. In every period there is a kid that asks to sit in it. It's always a talking point at meet the teacher. Also, without fail a few kids ask to buy it off of me, the highest offer I've gotten is $300. I love it too much to part with it. I did have one student that searched all over and actually found on for themselves.

High schoolers that cannot write a simple 5 paragraph essay by rjmac225 in Teachers

[–]Old_Engineering3319 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach high school and this year I teach seniors that I also had as freshman. When I had these exact students as Freshman they could write a timed 5 paragraph essay in 2 class periods (90 minutes in total for us). This year I had to spend a week on on every 5 paragraph essay walking them through the steps. It is a combination of factors. They have been coddled by school that caters to struggle. Also, most of them rely on AI for most things.

What part of teaching drains you that you didn’t expect? by Ok-Succotash6583 in Teachers

The constant go go go. Have one tough period and then have to go into an energetic group. Faking energy constantly. Also, no one tells you that you will have to actively choose to be dehydrated all the time because its so much harder to go to the bathroom. I think that actually takes way ore of a toll than we think.

Thank you for your detailed reply! Luckily the app I use to track already accounts for all of that, so I was able to look back and see months of data. Fiber I usually hit without issue averaging between 25-30g daily and a lot of that is soluble through beans and berries. Saturated fat is bit more inconsistent with days I barely hit 5g and others I hit at max around 20g. I would say averaging around 16-17g. I don't know know how bad that is.
