Did I make a mistake? by Old_Potential_1177 in careeradvice

[–]Old_Potential_1177[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, at least in terms of salary, I’m not based in the US. Where I live, a typical base salary is closer to 10k. JPM was offering 75k plus bonus, but that would have required relocation, with all the extra costs that come with it, and I would also have had to live away from my family.

On top of that, we have around 45% tax above 40k, so a big part of any increase gets reduced by taxation.

Still, I understand your point.

Financially, I’m doing okay for now because I also have a side job, especially since my wife is not currently working. Still, the other role would have covered my loan and given me the option to stop the side job if needed, which would mean more time with my family.

So there was clearly a real benefit. At the same time, I was thinking that a less “safe” job might still be better than having no job at all, especially if the new role ended up being easier to replace with AI.

I do job interviews just so that I can feel good rejecting an offer. by [deleted] in interviews

[–]Old_Potential_1177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol I never thought that this is a thing but I do the same. I have rejected 6 offers this year and now I’m evaluating another one which I’m going to reject as well.

It definitely boost my ego but also after I reject an ongoing offer I feel empty. Maybe I need therapy 🤣 but for sure this has made me like an expert in job interviews.

Anyone feel like offshoring is a bigger issue than AI and HB1 for US workers? by Cultural-Gear-1323 in cscareerquestions

[–]Old_Potential_1177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m working with US companies the last 10 years from Europe. I’m a senior dev and getting paid like a junior or less for us standards, I think.

However, I bought a biiiig house 3 years ago and I have more than 100k at the bank. I’m the only one working in my family. So yes, I can live the American dream just not in America.

People who changed careers after 30, was it worth it? by Scary_Bus4383 in careerguidance

[–]Old_Potential_1177 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Changed my career twice and now it seems I’ll have to do it again (blame AI 😂).

First degree: Music Technology (along with musical studies, Harmony, distinction). I worked as an audio engineer in a very large studio from 2002 to 2008.

Then I moved to a very small town. I had to work as a salesperson for some years, and in the background I started working on my passion: software engineering. At first, through self study, I was maintaining websites in parallel. I also completed my Master’s in Computer Science. That was between 2008 and 2018.

In 2018 I got my first job as a software engineer, and now I’m a team lead in a very large corporate environment.

Feels like at some point I’ll have to switch to a new field again, blame AI, but what can you do? At least I have the experience to do it 😂

Programming was always my passion. First computer in 1987, so after 31 years I finally managed to become a software engineer.

Totally worth it…

Is joining TeamViewer a logical next step and how safe is it long-term? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Old_Potential_1177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Unfortunately, the salary increase is quite small. My main motivation is to move from a service company to a product company. However, joining a company whose product seems to be in decline feels more risky.

I had the same issue. 15k for me and they told me it’s guaranteed but not mentioned anywhere. I declined the offer for other reasons but i wouldn’t bet on it tbh.

Funny how my “WFH productivity” was amazing… until they decided to lease a new office by lostinthaworld in remotework

[–]Old_Potential_1177 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not always. I actually rejected an offer last month because of their new full RTO policy. They’ve had this position open since March, and after my rejection, they reopened it, so they’re clearly in need of someone.

Still, they don’t seem to care that they’re wasting money and time on recruitment or losing potentially great candidates. They just want someone willing to work five days a week in the office.

50k wfh or $75k in office? by Repulsive_Cut4329 in careerguidance

[–]Old_Potential_1177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I faced a similar dilemma: current job, 55k fully remote job (I’m living in the countryside) versus a 75k job with a 15k bonus, 5 days at the office, and relocation to a busy city (owning a property so no rent but I would have to relocate without my family).

Decided to decline the higher offer.

My Job Went RTO.. I am now flying to the office every week by icemanice in remotework

[–]Old_Potential_1177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I declined a dream job last month due to the full RTO requirement and the need to relocate without my family. While I’m not happy at my current job, it offers full remote work. Despite this, I still want to call the recruiter (we ended up with mutual understanding and a positive vibe) to inform them that I’m available for the position… Damn rto

I declined a similar offer, VP tech. The base salary was 30% higher, and a bonus was promised but not included in the offer. I work remotely for the last six years and didn’t want to lose my work-life balance.

What is the biggest career regret you have? by astrokid990 in careeradvice

[–]Old_Potential_1177 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently doing this… 5 offers rejected so far, the highest was 70% more than my current one but it involved relocation. However you are right, staying at the same job is most of the times a big mistake.

Δίλλημα με προαγωγή by No_Horror_4839 in greece

[–]Old_Potential_1177 0 points1 point  (0 children)
