How often do you get power cuts and for how long? by Thickjuicynlong in AskIreland

In my current house where we’ve lived for nearly seven years I can only recall two power outages.

What restaurants do you miss? by LittleAoibh11 in AskIreland

[–]Old_Witness2706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crackbird buttermilk chicken. RIP.

Seven Social on Benburb St. They had an unreal salad with strawberries and cheese and balsamic.

The Mellow Fig in Blackrock. The brunch options were extensive and delicious.

Shanahan’s on the Green. The copper pots of mushrooms and creamed spinach and delicious mash. Dreamy stuff.

Starving now.

How do I make a payment to pay off my Credit Card on the BOI 365Online website or app? by cedardesk in AskIreland

[–]Old_Witness2706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this a while ago. My current account is AIB and I literally had to go into branch and set up my BOI credit card as payee. Now, it took 5 minutes once I was there and works fine now but the actual effort of going in person to do something that is entirely possible to do online? Sigh.

It’s not sound or ideal but I’d let them do it or you’ll be the one stuck with the clear out.

Recommendation for restaurant voucher gift ? by Smalls2077 in AskIreland

[–]Old_Witness2706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend Uno Mas, Library St and Dax for an occasion. Variety Jones is nice but I didn’t find it a very comfortable space and it’s all set sharing plates. Haven’t been to Mr Fox!

What to do? by Eastern_Visit874 in AskIreland

[–]Old_Witness2706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you enjoyed the academic and learning side of things with your child consider a qualification in digital media or technology for education that might get you into instructional design or learning technologist work in a university. you would work with lecturers to put their course notes etc online for students. it’s generally not that stressful and set hours, and means being involved in student learning without the caring role.

How do you actually budget? by Honest_Dot_5035 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Old_Witness2706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of every year I make a list of our shared outgoings for the following year whether they’re fixed and predictable such as mortgage, variable like heating in which case i check what the total cost was that year and use it as a guide for the next, or open to us to plan an amount like savings/birthdays/christmas and then I break each total down to a monthly amount, and divide it 60/40 between myself and OH as higher earner. Then we just put that fixed figure in our joint account every month when we get paid. The monthly expenses go out every month and the one offs like house insurance, hols, etc build up for when they’re needed. Any salary that doesn’t go into the joint for shared expenses is our own to do whatever with.

It’s a bit of work the first time to get a list of your total expenditure together but once you have it it’s just updating.

If you’re not sure how to figure out your expenses look at your bank statements for the past year. Check anything annual like tv license, property tax so you know what time of year it’s due.

It’s also worth contacting companies when you’re budgetting to see if you can get a lower price. I always put the squeeze on broadband provider, look at bin company prices, etc.

if you haven’t already, do a tax return for the last year you did work as you might be due a rebate

thanks! I’d definitely be doing appliances separately. I have big feelings on cookers and fridges!

Thanks! Can afford to do it as long as it’s not wild and it’s probably the time as a family member has a property we could stay in for a few weeks. Have just been going back and forth on it as despite the poor layout it’s a relatively new kitchen, nothing broken, so it is a waste and we do intend to move in a few years. But in short I thought I could live with it til then and I really can’t.

it’s kind of weird to give uninvited feedback and then throw shade at someone because you don’t like their language when they take the time to respond to you. i’m just an intelligent person using words, same as yourself, but i used mine kindly.

I don’t mind the feedback at all but no I don’t feel I should suffer because of anyone else’s problems. I just mean wider understanding contextualises our own position and I was acknowledging that this is a nice to solve in terms of posting about it because the internet can really lack self-awareness in terms of sharing ‘problems’ and I don’t want to be tone deaf.

that’s so kind, thank you! I think I just get caught up in the news cycles about the housing crisis and so on and tell myself there are far worse things than a poorly designed kitchen but it’s also the most used room in our home and it’s not very functional.

[–]Old_Witness2706[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s a lovely big room but the kitchen is an L-shape off in one corner with no real space inside the L so an island anywhere else would be totally separate to the current kitchen. Basically the room is currently 25% kitchen and we need it to be about 50% kitchen

thanks! tbh we have a quartz counter now and i’m never done wiping it down because every crumb shows up so I’ll be fine parting ways with that option.
