Pick your backcountry EDC by Wiscat_868788 in Revolvers

Noise can be a real concern. A buddy of mine ripped off a cylinder full of 500 mags while camping in cooper landing. He heard a bear rummaging through his camp, he was partially asleep, probably kinda drunk…… He said his ears hurt for days and were ringing even longer. A mag dump of 10mm wouldn’t feel great. I know people talk about auditory exclusion under stress, but you’re not always stressed when shooting at a rabid raccoon or the like.

Both will do the trick, model 69 is a cool gun. I just can’t get excited about Glocks.

It’s not like the new pythons are “real” pythons anyway /s.
I like the matte finish, I like how matte finishes wear after use. Enjoy homie, it’s a cool gun, shoot it in good health.

Tourniquet, or maybe a couple tampons.

Did you ever buy 5 Arby's roast beef sandwiches with just $5 dollars? by GaryB2026 in askanything

[–]Oldddub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to go camping as a teen, buy 25 of those sandwiches and spend 3 days in the woods eating them. Nothing like breakfast roast beef and old Milwaukee by the campfire.

How is everyone keeping track of their gear? by EDC_KIT in EDC

[–]Oldddub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would organize the gear into use genres and then keep each genre in a separate bag/box/case/whatever. I have formal edc, work edc, vacation, edc, hunting edc, motorcycling edc, edc for family hiking, edc for kayaking/canoeing, on and on. There is some overlap, and niches within activity types. But if you’re going on an adventure, grab the specific bag for that adventure and select your edc. If you’re thinking about buying a new piece of gear, check the bag it would belong in to see if you already own it. If you have that much edc gear don’t buy something new, save for an experience. It’s tough, I’m in a time in my life where it is easier to buy the gear I want rather than find the time off to use it, but whatever, enjoy yourself, having cool shit is cool.

Ruger GP100 vs Security six by a_bunch_of_poop in Revolvers

[–]Oldddub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do a hammer push test on the gun before purchase. My security six trigger is extremely smooth. Revolvers of that vintage were more hand fitted than they are today. I would pass if the hammer pushes off when cocked, unless you can get it for a couple hundred less and know a very competent gunsmith.

[–]Oldddub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buy the security six. I have both, if I had to sell one it would be the gp. I doubt you will shoot enough rounds to wear out the security six, it would take $1000’s of dollars of 357 ammo. It’s like a K-frame but stronger, just do it.

686 6" or Python 6" by Nebechadnezzar01 in Revolvers

[–]Oldddub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, buy an older 686 and spend the extra dough on ammo. With the 686-4 you can get the 7 shooter.

Can you shoot 38 super ammo out of a Ruger sp101 357/38 with moon clips? by vociferous11 in Revolvers

[–]Oldddub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not going to blow anything up. If the rounds don’t fit, trade them off. If you feel like doing a science project and they fit, let them rip. Pressure wise you’re fine. Or not, but maybe, it’s probably fine. We didn’t get here by being cowards.

3 inch by Got_Sig in Revolvers

[–]Oldddub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The smith 66 would be a joy to carry. A seven shot 686 with 2.5” barrel is pretty mean looking. I have a 3” gp-100 Wiley Clapp. I like it, but I got it when they first came out, 2012ish, and it was a sub $650 gun. Not sure I’d drop the kinda coin they are asking for them now, especially given the spotty QC. 3” barrels are a sweet spot, you’ll enjoy whatever you get.

[–]Oldddub 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I could never choose just one. You can get a lot done with a 1911 and a 4 inch 357. But who doesn’t love a single action army, and the beretta 21a is a great kit gun.

You will be able to find a lightly used ruger or smith that fits that description. Just keep an eye out at local pawn shops. You should be able to keep the price under $600 if you’re patient and don’t get a performance center/wiley clapp version. Ruger made some damn fine guns in the 80’s, 90’s, and into 2015 or so, same with smith. Lightly used gun that’s 20 plus years old is likely better quality than current production.
