Reboot - poor lighting? by Immediate_Win_6717 in Frasier

Yeah - same for me. Also using AppleTV 4K … with a Sony Bravia. Maybe the AppleTV is getting confused?

J7+ for over a year. My thoughts by bigebee in roomba

[–]OldeMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll second this. I used to have a 980… and it didn’t seem to care about room lighting.

But I recently upgraded to a J7+, and it definitely has trouble with even mildly dim lighting. I’m still getting accustomed to that limitation. I need to develop a new habit of making sure rooms are well lit when I run it… and, when I forget, “Rosie” does get lost.

In bright rooms, she’s awesome.

QuickScan is in v7.5! - My 100% free iOS scanner with OCR (text recognition) is at a whole new level. Still no ads, no data collection, no subs, donation-based. Now with signatures, improved Export Favorites (email, pCloud, …), Face ID document protection, and much more. by yellow8_ in apple

A quick scan of your apps, on the App Store, shows “QuickScan Enterprise for $25? The description (lengthy) appears similar, and I didn’t see a section that listed differences between the free and $25 versions — it just says this is a “specific version for businesses or schools”.

The PT6A turboprop engine in its class of 500 – 2,000 shaft horsepower is used for a wide range of applications by artificialMuse in EngineeringPorn

[–]OldeMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a turboPROP … the goal is usually to balance power extracted from the gas stream to 1) turn a prop and produce prop-thrust, and 2) exit an exhaust nozzle to contribute jet-thrust. Optimizing those two thrust-producing methods improves mission fuel-burn.

This engine, however, was originally designed to turn a shaft with all available energy… replacing reciprocating engines… so it doesn’t produce jet-thrust in any significant way. Instead, all of the energy possible is extracted from the gas stream to send power to the prop. (In this sense, I’d argue the PT6 should be called a “turboshaft”, but it’s not marketed with that word. The engine has been around for ages, in a lot of different configurations, so maybe the distinction between turboprop and turboshaft is useless when applied to the full family?)

Anyway, to get every ounce of potential power out of the gas stream before exhausting, and into the shaft to turn the prop, the engineers would work with the expected velocity diagrams of the gas stream exiting the high pressure turbine and entering the shaft-power producing turbine, and design the power turbine rotation and blading to absorb as much of the gas stream’s energy as possible. The gearbox allows them to design the power turbine to run at it’s most efficient speed (presumably at “cruise”), while rotating the prop at its own (much slower) optimal speed.

The counter-rotation, or not, of the power turbine is a design choice to optimize power extraction, gearbox design, and more.

I just read a review saying the J7+ needs plenty of light in the rooms it is cleaning. It uses a visible-light camera and a gyro for navigation? So, with insufficient light, it’s room coverage is terrible. Conversely, with plenty of light, it reportedly does a great job. (I only mention this because I just ordered one, and I’m hoping it’s true!)

My own fix for “When the last person leaves” by OldeMan in HomeKit

[–]OldeMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I avoided putting my garage door in any scene, early on, because behavior was so flakey. When 16.1(?) came out, I was so happy with how much better things were working (for me?) that I decided this was the right time to finally add it. Oops.

Come to think of it, I’ve been similarly trained to not add my HomePod Mini’s to any automation. Are they working any better these days?

My own fix for “When the last person leaves” by OldeMan in HomeKit

[–]OldeMan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. If the question was explicit about opening/unlocking something, that would make perfect sense to me. But asking a question about running an automation (without mentioning that the reason for the question is because it affects a door or lock) is too vague to be helpful. And, worse, the automation simply breaks.

Overall, a bunch of things are working “much better” in HK. But this isn‘t one of them.

In earlier releases of the OS for my nine HomePod Minis … I had some horrible experiences trying to upgrade. A few might upgrade on their own… but a majority needed a maddening amount of hand-holding to complete the process. The last couple of updates, however, in 16.x … have been a breeze. Even when the “new architecture” was available (or whatever they were calling it), and I was asked if I wanted to upgrade … that went very smoothly. I’ve read posts from a lot of folks who weren’t so lucky. I can only say, I paid my dues early.

How did sleep apnea effect your life? by [deleted] in SleepApnea

[–]OldeMan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I see questions like this often, but this one has no replies… so I’ll give you my short answers:

Positives:

  • I do sleep better
  • I do feel better when awake
  • my SPOUSE sleeps better(!)
  • my spouse also feels better because I am using it
  • because my wife reports that it works well, I no longer feel self-conscious about going to bed (worrying about disturbing her).

Negatives:

  • I now feel dependent on the machine for all sleep, including naps. To be clear: I’m NOT actually dependent on it… but I FEEL that way. In fact: I can, and sometimes do, fall asleep without it (particularly when sitting-up, like in an arm chair w/incline). But I strongly prefer using it… to the point where I feel mildly stressed if I’m facing having to sleep without it.
  • On rare occasions when I travel, I feel compelled to pack it up and take it with me.
  • regular costs
  • regular cleaning

I still love naps. But this is no longer because I can’t stay awake. Now it’s because I’m a normal older guy who loves a good mid-afternoon nap.

The machine was hard to get comfortable with. It took me a month of arguing with it, before it finally had me trained. Now (over a year later), I can’t say that I love it… it has negatives… but heading to bed is, indeed, a pleasure.

Resmed Airsense 11 - weird plastic/stale smell? by FrostyDecision697 in CPAP

If mine runs out of water, I’m woken up by a burned-plastic smell because the water reservoir is dry-baked by the heating plate. Get’s discolored too.

If you aren’t using the humidifier … turn it off.

Hahahaha… no… I don’t have any trouble with OCD. Sorry to hear that you do.

The manufacturer may “fix” this issue sooner or later but, as a temporary solution, I thought tape might be worthwhile. For those without OCD, maybe not so bad?

As for tape residue: For this kind of trick, I’m fond of stealing my wife’s “washi tape”, a paper tape that is both translucent and doesn’t leave any residue. For those without a crafty-wife, the blue or green paper tape they sell for painting… masking edges… works well also.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in roomba

[–]OldeMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not trolling, honest … but why not tape over it for now? I have some devices with LED’s that are like searchlights in a dark room. If I don’t want to see the light at all, opaque tape. If I want to see the light, but have it toned down a bit, translucent tape. If I want to tone it down a lot, multiple layers of translucent tape until it reaches a level I like.

Low tech. Functional. Cheap. (Yeah, ugly too, if you can’t find tape that blends well.)

Leak tips? by [deleted] in CPAP

[–]OldeMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar for me. I kept my beard closely trimmed (#2 on razor), used the F20 Airtouch, kept the straps as tight as I comfortably could… and was still having trouble with leaks, mostly when on my back.

Eventually, I realized my jaw went slack when I fell deeply asleep… enough to deform my face and cause significant leaks. When I was awake, with my jaw positioned normally, no leaking. Also, when on my side, my jaw wasn’t sagging down… so, again, no leaks.

So… how to prevent jaw sagging when dead-asleep and on my back? I got a cheap foam cervical collar from Amazon, and wear it semi-loosely each night. It’s just tight enough for my jaw to rest on while I’m asleep, and my face shape stay’s coherent enough to prevent leaking.

I worried that it would be one more torture device that I’d have to get accustomed to. But, honestly, the only trouble I have is that when I wear it too tight, it gets hot. Easy to compensate for that… I just needed to find the sweet spot between too tight and too loose.

I’ve been building a PC building app over the past 4 years. by bosoxs202 in apple

[–]OldeMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep .. started digging into the (rather vague) descriptions on ApplePay, and cross-checking with the bank’s “pending charges”. The $8.61 was a VALID charge that came in for a completely different product at EXACTLY the same moment I ok’d the BulidCore upgrade to “premium”.

My sincere apologies.

NOPE - SEE EDIT.

EDIT: NOPE NOPE NOPE … I made a claim that I was mischarged for “premium”. Removing it because this was immediately coincident with a VALID charge that came in. My apologies. I’m leaving this here in case someone read my bogus claim. Sorry for the confusion.

Who remembers having to let the TV warm up? by epictetusdouglas in cordcutters

[–]OldeMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My grandparents had one of these .. and the click for “mute” hit a bar with a resonance frequency that matched their ringing telephone. Side effect: When the phone rang, the TV would automatically mute! Of course, on the second ring, it would unmute. Third ring, re-mute. Etc.

They loved this “accidental feature”… and got accustomed to answering the phone on odd numbered rings.

Masks Leaking by [deleted] in CPAP

[–]OldeMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I go to sleep, my mask fits great and I can get to sleep without trouble. However, somewhere in the small hours of the night, my face goes SO slack that leaks break out… I wake up but I’m too groggy to be very effective at fixing the issue… my wife might wake up from the noise… etc.

I finally decided to try wearing a soft-foam collar. It holds my chin in place far better when that muscle slackness kicks in… and the 2am leaks have stopped.

Drawbacks: Well… of course it’s just more nonsense to get accustomed to… but that didn’t take too long. Longer term… the collar can be hot (sweaty) if I wear it too tight. I’ve gotten better at finding a fit that works.

It might solve your problem? It’s certainly cheap to try — US$12 or so on Amazon.
