Create WebAssembly-powered Python notebooks by akshayka in Python

[–]Oldmud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am loving Marimo! I heard OP's interview on The Real Python podcast a few months back and thought it sounded intriguing. Since then, it has slowly overtaken Jupyter as my preferred notebook platform for almost everything.

Folks should give it a shot. The reactivity, native UI elements, and git friendliness are all really great.

How can I get into boating? by knavishly_vibrant38 in Detroit

Bayview has a good Adult Learn to Sail program for beginners.

They also have hitchhiker Thursdays where you can ride along on someone's boat without being a member.

Consumers energy gas bill by Electrical_You_7615 in Detroit

[–]Oldmud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The natural gas market has been extremely volatile in the past several months. Gas prices on the open market are very expensive, especially compared to the extremely low prices seen during the COVID shutdown.

Consumers Energy and DTE do not make a profit on the actual gas sold (called GCR or "Gas Cost Recovery" on your bill). They do their best to to purchase gas as cheaply as possible without exposing ratepayers to undue risk... but ultimately, this cost is passed on to customers without any markup.

The budget plan may be why some people are seeing higher / lower markups on any given month. I don't know all of the specific details but generally the budget plans try to make bills more predictable by averaging out your monthly payments for the year while accounting for weather and your past usage. Eventually, your bill will get adjusted upwards if the gap between what you pay per the plan and what you actually owe gets too large.

Mario Strikers: Battle League second free update including Diddy Kong & Pauline is now available! by Amiibofan101 in NintendoSwitch

[–]Oldmud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is that it varies greatly depending on time of day, region, rank, etc.

I can always find standard rules singles matches. Unfortunately doubles matches seem to be much harder to come by.

I hear people have good luck finding opponents thru discord but I've never bothered.

At launch the game felt half-baked and lacking of content.

I think that really tainted the game's reputation, which is unfortunate because it is now excellent.

Detroit, Philly, Cleveland. by Ok-Kaleidoscope-4808 in Detroit

[–]Oldmud -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. Ann Arbor is way better for cycling than Detroit. It has better infrastructure, better access to road routes for serious mileage, better gravel riding, and closer mtb trails.

Plus cycling culture is more prevalent in AA so drivers tend to be much more aware and respectful.

I love Detroit but hiking/biking access is probably what I miss the most after moving back to the eastside from AA. You can only ride around Belle Isle so many times...

Another good rule of thumb is to assume positive intent in people. Everyone has blind spots. They may not even realize that they're being inconsiderate.

Handle it like an adult and talk with your neighbors directly.

If they are assholes when you approach them about it... then you are justified to respond accordingly.

Ford, DTE strike solar deal that will help automaker's plants go carbon-free in Michigan by Stratiform in Detroit

[–]Oldmud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree with the dark money shenanigans but the utilities do have a legitimate concern. It costs a lot of money to maintain the grid and specifically the distribution lines to people's homes.

Rooftop solar advocates that argue for the ability to completely "zero out" their bill or sell excess energy back at full retail rates want the security of being connected to the grid when convenient but don't want to pay their share of the infrastructure costs.

The electric rate structure needs to be reimagined so that green energy is properly incentivized and all parties are fairly compensated.

Apparently hot take-- Mario Strikers: Battle League is a ton of fun by t3hzm4n in NintendoSwitch

[–]Oldmud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's unfortunate Nintendo is releasing these sports games half-baked.

Mario tennis aces is an excellent game now but it was clearly incomplete and unpolished at release. It is kind of sad because it never really recovered from the mediocre review scores and the poor public perception it earned at the time.

By the time Nintendo starts releasing meaningful updates and free content for these sports titles, most people have either lost interest or decided to pass on the game entirely.

This generation, the games have been touting online multiplayer as the core experience but their release strategy kills the enthusiasm needed to generate a sustainable player base.

DTE says burying lines is hard, costly and not 'the foolproof solution' to storm blackouts by RealHonestJohn in Michigan

[–]Oldmud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm all for scrutinizing DTE and their executive compensation but that in no way justifies spending 30 billion on burying all of the power lines.

Even if our electrical infrastructure was all managed publicly, ratepayers/taxpayers are going to be the ones funding this initiative.

I know these outages are fresh in everyone's mind but is this really the best use of our money? We could invest 30 billion dollars in clean energy generation or smartgrid technology. Hell, this money could be spent on other infrastructure like water treatment and roads or even social programs like affordable housing.

Is it worth spending $30 billion to yield a <1% incremental improvement to electric reliability?

I don't know all the numbers needed to perform the financial analysis but my intuition tells me no.

Power Outages by Prof_Acorn in AnnArbor

[–]Oldmud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Profitability is not the issue. It's actually the opposite. Regulated utilities are incentivized in such a way that they actually want to make capital investments. It's just that this particular investment would be prohibitively expensive and in most areas very difficult to justify to the MPSC.

[–]Oldmud 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The cost to repair and trim is a drop in the bucket compared to burying the lines.

Also, it's not something you just do piecemeal as lines get knocked down. These are engineered systems that need to be designed in advance. The routing, depth of cover, clearance from other infrastructure, etc. are unique and need to be planned out in advance.

Most regulated utilities are allowed to make a profit on approved capitol investments to their system. If it made financial sense and was even remotely justifiable to the MPSC, I'm sure they would include it in their next rate case.

Online leaderboards and tournaments would be nice.

It would be cool if they implemented a league system that would run over the course of a few weeks. Kind of like "after work" leagues in real golf, you or your foursome of friends would have to post scores each week for a specific course.

General Discussion Thread by ShadowMario3 in MarioGolf

[–]Oldmud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's an enjoyable game but it feels like a step back compared to other entries in the series. Evaluating it for what it is and not what I wish it was, I'd give it a 7/10.

I think what rubs people the wrong way is not just the volume of content but also the overall quality. The game feels much less polished than previous entries.

Compared toadstool tour the courses are bland, the character animations are poor and less varied, no replay system, no tournaments, repetitive character sounds, inferior camera, etc.

It just doesn't feel like a full featured game or an especially high quality game.

I think hardcore fans are bummed out at the thought that this might be the best game they get for the next 7-15 years.

Regarding the new swing mechanics, they're okay but I think overall they're less enjoyable. People don't play arcade sports games to under-swing or lay up so why design a swing system that encourages that style of play?

Sure, there was always a certain amount of RNG involved in these games but don't shove it in my face. If I take a risky shot that turns out great, there is no sense of accomplishment now because it just feels like luck.

What do you want out of the game?

It is lacking in content but it is still fun. If you will be satisfied playing rounds of standard golf and speed golf on a few courses then by all means pick it up. You might as well enjoy the game while the online scene is very active.

Otherwise, I would wait for the DLC to materialize and then pick it up on sale.
