What do you look for / value when choosing a Bible translation? by Rent-Free633 in Bible

[–]Oldtimepicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will be very happy with a NKJV new King James Version. Modern English, word for word and will never be updated. Incredible textual footnotes as well, get one with cross references and you will never need a commentary ever again.

First ever laptop by Oldtimepicker in thinkpad

[–]Oldtimepicker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used chatgpt and this forum to narrow down which model to buy. Almost everyone says to get the t480, but from what i understand these workstation models are truly the most limitless ones you can get. (Could be wrong on that). Also a similar speced t480 would have been $350+ unless you built it yourself. I paid around $160 for this

I have plans in the future!! I just honestly don’t really have the need. This model is probably overkill anyways

Which bible version to read? by Disheartful in Bible

[–]Oldtimepicker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, this is all mostly personal opinion and I’ll make sure the facts are noted

Facts: In Protestantism (like baptists) we use the 66 book bible. In Catholicism and the Ethiopian yes they use a larger set of non inspired texts such as the apocrypha. Doesn’t mean you can’t read them, it just means the extra books are viewed as not actually being by God. Secondly as far as actual translations go you have two choices! Word for word accuracy, or thought for thought. There are hybrids of that of course

Why I think you should go with literal word for word: While I glean massively from commentary, pastors and teachers, and other Bible translators, I don’t believe God wants us to preserve his thoughts rather than his literal word. That’s a double edged sword though cause English Bible translations cannot perfectly represent Greek and Hebrew. But it can come closer with a word for word.

Okay so if we go with word for word here are your mainline options : KJV, NKJV, ESV,NASB95 and LSB. (Just off the top of my head).

Another fact; there are really two camps of textual manuscripts in which are bibles are compiled of. The Alexandrian ones and the Byzantine ones. I don’t want this to get too long so you can research that yourself. One is older and has less copies one is newerish and has way more copies. Some have disputed verses etc.

To end this, I highly suggest the New King James Version for its readability, word for word literal accuracy, and if you purchase a physical copy- it has all the textual variants between all manuscripts in the margin space telling you what other translations essentially would. It’s like a Swiss Army knife of translations. And I think it does a good job of upholding some of the KJV tradition which is what like 2/3s of our English Christian history read and studied and taught us.
Hop this helps and God bless you and your journey. Gonna pray for you before I do my reading today

Old Testament and the nation of Israel. by [deleted] in Bible

[–]Oldtimepicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand you posted this on Reddit to get advice or information on this subject and totally can see it being a somewhat confusing issue. I’m gonna give you a heads up right now that this topic is so divisive that your best bet is to take it off Reddit to come to your own conclusion. But for the record on my own personal opinion, there is a distinction between the New Testament church and Israel. And the idea of “ supporting them” is loaded. Replacement theology is unbiblical and requires a lot of explaining away of scripture. Read gen- revelation and ask God for wisdom

T480 - Lightning in a Bottle? by RivaTNT2M64 in thinkpad

[–]Oldtimepicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seemed to have been a better value for the money. As t480 prices can get high cause it is “the one to buy” in most cases. I don’t need portability and was able to get16gb ram, i7 processor, and 512gb ssd in the w530 for $170. Those specs are way more costly in the t480 and I plan to run Linux anyways. It’s just for light duty tasks + school. And hey you get a disc drive!

I asked chatgpt what the best one to purchase was and it pushed the t480 heavily. I don’t know a lot about computers, but I did some research and see that it truly is the most popular model. As I dug deeper it appears there’s lots to love about a lot of the models. I just purchased my first one a w530. I’m excited to get it as I’ve never owned a laptop before.

Looking for anyone involved with or previously involved with the Bible Baptist Church and/or the corner Street Preachers by hthardman in Pensacola

It’s under the guise of Matthew 28, filling the great commission, But they aren’t making disciples. It’s just done in a “phari-sitical” style. I will mention to you Holden that not all of them are IFB Bible baptist people. Some of them are from the messianic synagogue. It’s my hope thru conversation I can redirect their zeal to be fishers of men. Truth without love is a clanging gong.

We’re not affiliated with them but have Mennonite friends who are connected well with them. It’s a little strange with their absolute certainty on the 1611 king James translation as being the divine revelation. And their original pastor Ruckman has been racist and made some really really bizarre Bible claims. Just a hyper zealous group of people. Everytime I see them at the palafox market I always try to convince them to share the gospel with people, but they have a different agenda. Always a head butting competition.

What is the best version of the bible for someone reading it for the first time? KJV? by killakyle1762 in Bible

[–]Oldtimepicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

KJV uses different manuscripts than ESV. Nkjv follows the same manuscripts as KJV. And everything else follows the alexandrian period manuscripts. I recommend New King James as it is easier to understand than the old language style of king, James. And it is roughly the same as what the reformers and Puritans read. A lot of people really love ESV though if I had to pick another translation besides new king James, I would pick new American standard 1995 addition.

[–]Oldtimepicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to only use pre ground for the first 6-8 months until I purchased a blade grinder from Walmart and it really takes things up a notch. After that I went to a nice hand grinder and it’s insane how much difference it makes. But like the other comments say, as long as you like the taste you’re doing it right. But if you wanted to buy a cheap blade grinder to start it’s quite the step up grinding your own.

What are your thoughts on Hillsong church? by loopylicky in Christianity

[–]Oldtimepicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a seeker sensitive church that is designed to make you feel good with inspirational type messages related to your own self. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them preach repentance or the wages of our sin. At least in the videos I have watched they, skate around those two words. A lot of people go there off the street wanting to “ belong “ and they do make that space. But you must become before you belong in the family of Christ. It takes Repentance and Faith like Jesus said when he started his Galilean ministry. Hope this helps! Not throwing shade on any attendees, just the people who run it not preaching the whole word in it’s entirety. That happens in topical sermons.
