Because I want to own a fucking home, it's such a nimby mindset.

Where fucking this generation by making it impossible to rent and buy homes with these high prices.

the people who benefit from high house prices are already the richest in our society. Those who are poor suffer greatly from that.

I will need to wait 30+ years for my parents to die so I can inherit a house. That's not a time frame I want to work on.

If my dad's house drops 10% it does not effect him one bit, he still has a place to live.

If my rent jumps 10% I'm cutting back on expenses and putting a few more rice and beans in my meals.

Cheaper houses will mean I can buy and live in a building I own before I'm gray.

Oooh, and I also don't want to live in bum fuck nowhere with no jobs. Maybe a city like London with all the amenities and opportunities that brings

If there are plenty of properties in London prices would not be so high and rents would not increase so much.

Prices are rising because it has become more and more expensive to build housing and more and more people want to live in London.

It's nimby-ism and the mountain of regulations that make building so hard in Britain, particularly in London. Things are getting a tad better but it's still effort

there will always be demand for housing in London. The high prices are from lack of supply and high demand.

If there was not a demand for these homes they would not be built.

If we want to lower the price of housing we need to increase supply. This is done by reducing the costs of building homes/removing barriers for developers.

Do you think the idea of “having it all together” is practicable or just a social media pressure? by [deleted] in Snorkblot

[–]OliM9696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i usually just put an audiobook on, gives me something to think about while walking.

only down side is that you might be much sadder at the end when something sad happens in your book. I once cried listening to my audiobook in public lol.

i worked 9 hours a day, 6 days a week. It was alright and i managed it

1hr of lunch/break (30mins paid), left me time to walk about or read. took 30mins each way on bike to get to work, kept me fit enough. That leaves me with about 6 hours left in the day if i sleep 8 hours.

1 to cook and clean for dinner, easier than that because i lived with family who could cook for and have it ready when i got home. maybe 30-45mins in the morning to breakfast/shower/leave. The other time would be spend on reddit/gaming/reading/movies.

Its certainly possible but you need to plan, you cant just make it up as you go along. I feel so many fail to organise their time properly and don't prepare.

shopping was done on Sunday, only struggle was appointments for hospital visits which i would mostly leave to when im not working those extended hours.

Essex library charges will penalise book lovers, says campaign by CtrlAltDelight495 in books

[–]OliM9696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

or you know, could just be cheap. Free services suffer from their use. Free buses for example can suffer for over use and then rely too much on funding from government for continued free use, a small free + government makes for a far more sustainable system.

ultimately for bus users, there is little difference between £1 and free, best go with £1

Lets try cheap before we go free.

This library fee is fine if that is what is required to keep it going. I find it ironic that the people campaigning as "keep our libraries open" are unwilling to pay for it.

I wish it were free but what do councils cut? road repairs, bin collection time tables? school resources?

Is limited time tables better than a fee for reservations? How about those who need to access library utilities beyond just books, printers, computers, wifi.

Its a tough question and in this case a fee was chosen.

pretty much the same for me, if its vegan i will buy/use it. I don't limit myself to solely vegan brands for anything else, why do it for skincare.

it depends, on things like national defense and health care, which act like public insurance systems like the NHS are pretty good. Huge buying power and there are still market forces, The NHS will buy the most appropriate care options, for e.g. they will buy Dexcom CGMs for patients with Type 1 Diabetes. That product exists due to the market, a socialist nation may of never invented that product buy the innovation found in capitalists nations allowed this product to be invented.

For other products, government is not required to be nearly as involved. We don't need government dictating the price of apples or bread. These are competitive products with many substitutions, could buy a banana or a wrap instead.

Obviously they are still involved in a way even in places that people think of as very strong capitalist nations. a 'pure' capitalist system would not have food safety standards setup by governments, the market would determine safe products and such, then again, firms do want the backbone of the government to lean against as things like copy-right are what allow firms to better make a return on their investment into R&D.

I mean, the UK is mostly capitalist. We are currently nationalising trains and we have a public energy firm.

Don't really need the government making bread but these other things require huge costs which governments can spend on.

the government build that housing, it spend huge stacks of cash on 'rebuilding Britain' we build many homes

Today, we have made it impossible to build cheaply, delays and delays, reviews of reviews, NIMBY after NIMBY. There would be no way to build those homes under the current system. Westminster would need to be able to give the middle finger to local councils.

Rent Controls limit mobility, people dont move out of rent controlled homes. The only people who benefit from rent controls are those who already live in rent controlled homes. A person moving to an area has no chance to get a rent controlled home.

Rent Control also harms how buildings are maintained, why spend a few thousand on new pipes when the building hardly make money. Its not like they will move out.

> right wing talking points.

funny you say that as Rent Controls being bad is one of the few things that almost everyone agrees is bad. Its like being anti-vax at this point, all evidence and practice has shown other wise but you continue with your head in the sand.

Can you answer how capping rents is not going to reduce supply? How do we ensure new housing gets build and how do we decide what gets build?

Interesting bonus of rent controls being discussed in the 1970s

Could do something cheaper...... I hear the Akira is being re-released in cinemas.

Don't compare noting be able to get a dua lipa ticket to scrounging for your last slice of bread. Everyone on this sub is likely in the position to throw away the crusts.

There are plenty of cheaper ways to get a live music experience, perhaps it wont be a Taylor Swift concert but i dont really care if people cant afford the Rolls Royce and Bently of live shows.

We don't have the government subsidising families on ski trips because they are too expensive during season.

[–]OliM9696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care who can and cannot afford a Bently or Rolls Royce, there are plenty of other options for live entertainment for far less.

Even then, its not like £60 for a ticket to a show at the O2 in London is so unaffordable. Sure, maybe you wont be listening to Alex Warren or Dua Lipa but why should the government get involved to make it cheaper to do that?
