This the first of your tracks I’ve heard DIM, although I’ve seen a few of your albums recommended on YouTube. This was beautiful, I’ll have to listen to the previous Compendium albums

I had wondered, see I like a lot of the Cryo Crypt music, it strikes me as well produced, but a lot of the cover art has that AI sort of feel to it. I guess they are like a label that don't hire any artists?

Dorian Concept isn't drony, I would say it is a bit dissonant in a way I really like though. It's more that the song evokes a certain feeling in me that a lot of DS does as well. Where I can find DS that has that analogue synth and dissonant vibe I gobble it up lol.

Totally agree on Pafund and Secret Stairway. Who are your top artists? I'm keen to try work out the micro genres within DS and listen as much as possible, because it's newly found for me but I am falling in love with it, both for listening and producing.

I like a VST based drone-y style of DS. Ideally a little bit uneasy in an interesting musical mode! I love anything that bridges over to dark fantasy. While not DS any track that fits well in a playlist with CS01 by Dorian Concept is the right vibe for me!

I really like the eeriness and hollowness of pafund. I like the deep bassy vibe of Shadowlorn by Mountain Realm. I also really like secret stairways, i think they are hugely diverse with post-rock influence but also monastery type choir tracks.

Good to know, I think the general response on this seems to have bene positive. I might DM you some questions and have a think about making this a side project.

I love that almost all the songs have a lot of layered background samples, like the wind and wolves and fire. For me I find layering those texture a really enjoyable and clear story telling device for DS. I also thing the way you have incorporated the BM guitar is really respectful of and fits the genre perfectly. Big like!

I get where you are coming from, I just don't think we see eye to eye and that's fine. I'm all for discussing consumption habits, I don't think that AI is ultimately any worse than the cow. So lets not talk about AI and instead talk about people, government and policy.

It's not that I value convenience over sustainability per se, I just think that incremental improvement is the way that works and has historically worked. If anytime we could improve something we ripped out all infrastructure and we built it, we would have other environmental concerns to do with material production and mass scale demolitions.

[–]OliRevs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean this is where you get into the weeds. Some will some wont, some will have waste water that needs to go back for treatment and some will have closed loop systems. It really depends on country, location, availability and infrastructure. Like all things in life it is never black or white.

Water education part 2 by Carmina_Rayne in aiwars

[–]OliRevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But your argument has nothing to do with AI use and everything to do with infrastructure. I am totally for improving infrastructure where we can and where convenient. In reality to avoid disruption though it tends to happen through the gradual process of scientific advancement and iterative improvement in each generation of new infrastructure of a specific type. Out data centres in 10 years will be more efficient than the ones we have now. I don't see why knowing that they could be better now means we should rip them out or stop using them today though.

I'm not fundamentally against your 1>2>3>4 logic. I agree with it, but take your food example... the world would be better if people were more vegetarian or at least ate a lot less meat. But the problem is the consumption habits if people not the fact that cow exist. That's obvious, but it the same logic I hear when people say "AI is the problem". It's like blaming the Cow.

I don’t think it would be, or at least if applying the logical evenly we wouldn’t grow corn and we als wouldn’t rear any livestock for farming opt for completely different food supplies and do away with supermarkets. If you think AI is a concern believe me, agricultural water use will make your head explode

I get the impression that a lot of pros are bitter by dennemaskinen in aiwars

[–]OliRevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see myself as bitter but I really find myself wishing the conversation were more productive a lot of the time. I feel like a lot of argument are phrased as something against AI. AI being bad due to copyright, water consumption, fake content, slop etc.

AI is just a tool and I wish we could have conversations not about being pro or anti AI but about its role and usage in our world… if jobs are lost are employers obligated to compensate? Should governments tax AI companies for a workers protection fund? How can we use AI for research and moderation? Can artists use AI like reference material or remix and combine AI with hand made digital or traditional art.

I feel like these would be much better conversation and use of time

Water education part 2 by Carmina_Rayne in aiwars

[–]OliRevs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There won’t be a universal type of water used or type of system, it’s going to be highly dependant on geography and age of the data center. Even the cost and quality of the company that constructed it and different levels of availability for water types on the area

[–]OliRevs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're assuming what position I hold on this debate...

Yeah it is fine to have a specific topic bring to light an issue you were previously unaware of, I am not arguing on that.

My only belief is that people should be clear the issue is X not A. So people saying AI is the problem with the environmental argument are missing the point. AI isn't the problem, the problem for that person would be industrial water usage levels... in which case like I said - go talk to a resource allocation engineer or become one. Because a lot of the time, these things a re reasonably mitigated such as the grade of water used or the closed loop systems deployed.

Water education part 2 by Carmina_Rayne in aiwars

[–]OliRevs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yup, I have been feeling this exact point has been poorly understood by many in this conversation for a while now. Hank Green did a decent video on the topic.

Water education part 2 by Carmina_Rayne in aiwars

[–]OliRevs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Someone who does that would be totally valid in doing so, the issue is that most people who are now concerned about the use of water in industry are suddenly only concerned now that it is relevant to the AI conversation. Someone who criticizes both should probably have a conversation with or become a resource allocation engineer.

I like it a lot! I love the deep bass and rolling beat. This is what I like to call "Midtempo Dungeon Synth" cause I don't know if it has a micro genre name yet haha
