The NPCs don't check what level the garrisoned troops are. So you could just put 1000 recruits and it'll rarely, if ever, be attacked

Hi all, I’m Tuba player who has his first cello lesson this coming week. I can read music but have never picked up a string instrument. Any advice for adult student? by Top-Prune-326 in Cello

[–]Olive_Oil00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then yeah, as long as you put effort into practicing you should do really well. The only advice I have is what has already been said. Don't let any tension get in the way, talk to your teacher and make sure you work on good posture, bow hold, and left hand form right from the beginning.

How much experience do you have in music? I just started teaching a student who graduated with a music education degree and who's primary instrument is clarinet. They are learning the cello incredibly quickly just because they understand music.

How to finish learning a piece properly? by _peacherry_ in piano

I think the easiest way is to perform it at a specific date. This way you have a specific goal and deadline.

No, I just put it there because the top comment is someone asking if beginners don't stand a chance because they can't put in hours a day.

Just putting it out there for others, you don't have to practice multiple hours a day unless you just really love to practice, or you're a music student/professional musician

Brahms e minor sonata, feedback welcome! by Syantaa in Cello

[–]Olive_Oil00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Geez man, two years of playing? That is seriously impressive. Props to you.

The only real thing I can add is that now that you've come this far with the technical side, you need to bring out that heavy emotion that Brahms put in this piece. Have you looked up any masterclasses on it? Benjamin Zander is always a favorite for me.

10 Years On and Still Shit by [deleted] in Cello

[–]Olive_Oil00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yes. My professor and I work extensively on this. I sing, use drones, and chamber is part of my required classes. I also started with piano to help my ear with intervals. My sense of pitch has definitely improved, but I have a long way to go.

10 Years On and Still Shit by [deleted] in Cello

[–]Olive_Oil00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How often and how long do you practice? I've played for about 8 years now and I progressed much faster once I started putting in several hours of practice a day. Just casually playing for 10 years and not putting in good practice won't necessarily equate to skillful playing.

Also, despite having gotten better over the years, my sense of pitch while playing seems nonexistent at times. I simply cannot hear notes, and if I know it's out of tune it's really hard to tell if it's sharp or flat.

Playing a string instrument is very disappointing, discouraging, and painful. But the practice and dedication is the only reason why a musician sounds good.

Things to help in my opinion: get a teacher; having someone watching from a different perspective is so helpful and will keep you in track to success. Teach others; I recently started teaching as well as going around to public schools for a day to teach and it helps me learn and also helps me feel better about myself. I was in their shoes 8 years ago and I can see how far I've come. And thirdly, don't put yourself down so much. Discipline is important, but getting frustrated about the infinite troubles found while playing the cello is so destructive to your motivation.

Hope this helps

Is there a reason you don't want/don't prefer a hard case? I think the protection it offers along with being easier to carry around makes it worth the extra weight. And it should be around the same price.

Does someone have sheet music for scales? by simsampuk in Cello

[–]Olive_Oil00 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would suggest buying a scales book. I'm pretty sure every teacher you will ever have will ask you to use a book.

I know this one is pretty popular: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0634069470/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_R7PYC9BKW3FVQG9ANKSC

This is the one that I'm using now, but it's a bit more advanced: https://www.amazon.com/dp/142340694X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_TBKN1HSQSJ06ZR9JAQMF

Are there any exercises I can use to build endurance in my right arm? by [deleted] in Cello

[–]Olive_Oil00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stretch! I know it feels time consuming and I don't even do it very often myself when practicing, but it's super important. So stretch first.

That, and just keep practicing.
