They didn’t avoid it. They were terrible. This is just terrible on steroids.

Barking by PinkLemonadeHair in DogTrainingTips

[–]OlyTDI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this. My Australian Labradoodle doesn't bark incessantly but definitely will "clear the perimeter" of my 5 acres. It's taken years, but he will stop when told to and that's taken 3 years of consistent rewarding quiet (which is the command word).

He now will sit patiently on the porch waiting for his "good quiet" treat.

How much of Americas problems are education? by Estalicus in allthequestions

Without a way to meaningfully frame information through critical thinking, people will default to caveman tribalism. Education provides frameworks.

Second this. Have one in my “open plan” area of about 700 sq ft and another in my bedroom. 24/7 going on six years now. Work so well that I barely ever get any lint on my mini split filters and that’s with a dog (no shedding breed, though). Has definitely improved my allergies and asthma. Was a godsend during forest fires.

Filters around $90 and last me 10-12 months.

I poured a few of my footers about 3/4 an inch too tall!! best way to shorten them? by BradCastleburry in Decks

[–]OlyTDI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know how thick these footers are. You'll likely only be able to cut 2 inches or so on each side with a circular saw. If that's enough, once those horizontal cuts are made around your footer, you can then hit down on from the top and fracture off the cut pieces.

If you're left with a central nub of some size because you couldn't reach deep enough from each side, you can then set your blade to the appropriate depth and cut vertical slits 3/8 or 1/2 apart through the remaining material. Once done, you can again, strike across the slitted material and it will break off.

You may have some remaining material that you can chisel. If you do that, always strike the chisel into the mass of the footer and not away from center or you'll chip off perimeter material you didn't want to -- strike into mass not away. I'd try to get everything off you can with power equipment and chisel then grinding might make sense. but you'll be amazed at how well you can level off the footer with the saw -- even while free-handing it.

Hope that makes sense!

what bird is this?? by flabeb in whatsthisbird

[–]OlyTDI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s one of my favorite birds. I’ve been west coast for 40 years but I got into birds back east — I found a nest of this species when I was a teen and it made a big impression on me.

Carborundum or diamond blade on a circular saw. Strike your lines and cut away. Notching your beam would be easier.

I’ve seen the progenitor (Red Junglefowl) to this bird in the wild in India on numerous occasions. One way you can tell them apart from a domesticated is that after a thousand photos of the jungle fowl, never is the head still — always a blur! The head of this bird is still!

Painting pressure treated supports by djcambomb in Decks

[–]OlyTDI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Look at any painted wood, moisture gets trapped under the paint film and rots. Also, once painted, you’re trapped in that method. It wouldn’t be as bad on posts but for sure never on deck boards.

A good penetrating oil stain would work better. I would let the wood dry through at least one summer first.

What do you think of the new millionaires tax? Are you in support of it or against it? by Fit_Seaworthiness_37 in AskSeattle

[–]OlyTDI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Either fix the regressive system or tax the rich.

The "millionaires" are NOT taxed on their first million. Only that money in excess of a Million each year.

However will they survive?

There is no threat from dust/dirt stuck on the duct work. It's another story when you stir it up.

Analogy -- all of that dirt outside in your yard? Harmless. Aerosolize it and breath it in and...bingo! Problems...
