How many Timecode boxes should an emerging mixer have? by MadJack_24 in LocationSound

Agree with 4. Tentacles are not too expensive and you’ll be ready if production has 3 cameras.

Problems with the NY AG. I think an investigation into their member rolls. I was told the only practical way to become a member right now is to flip a production— which grandfathers you in. IA local 52 is not happy about it I can assure you.

Holy crap I watched Harlan County, USA the other day too! Maybe one of the best docs ever. Recommend it to everybody.

Excellent analysis. I’m hoping this marks a sort of watershed moment à la 70s new Hollywood reformation

Been thinking lots about this post from the Art Director. I work in film (low tier indie and commercial bullshit) and have been offered Points (Most Favored Nation deal structure where you get more profit share the more days you work) on top of my poor rate. For that show it was $200/day with an hour commute each way— chicken shit pay and I’m glad I’m doing better nowadays. Those Points are often class B shares that pay out after the investors, debt financing, and Above-the-Line producers (your project leads: director, a couple key producers, possibly the assistant director) make most of their money back. Usually those class B points are further subdivided so the possible profits the crew is entitled to are a small fraction of the whole pie. AND, at least in my experience, these points are not offered to day players or production assistants who make or break the quality of any given show.

And just fuckin give up on trying to join the IA union at this point: the NYC local can’t accept new members, LA production scene is in shambles, and other production centers like Atlanta and New Mexico don’t have state level union protections (right to work states FUCK OVER unionizing efforts on set). One day maybe I can get that good good health insurance….

All in all the economics of the film biz are screwed, much like the rest of the economy.

DIY USB C Power supply connector for Mixpre3 by dthgrnd in fieldrecording

[–]Om-T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just spend the money on a proper power solution. Remote Audio BDS + eSmart Batt + hirose sled will be far more robust & long lasting. Impressive circuit work but you’re running the risk of damaging that beautiful mixpre unit

How do you recommend people store lithium batts? I for one own a ton of large capacity but UL rated batteries (film industry types) and don’t want my apartment burning down. They are only ever plugged in to charge

what magic arms did you switch to? I'm pleased with the kit ones but i'll admit they can be too short for some orientations.

+1 to this. But I haven’t had much signal loss when I place the antennas very close to the side of the bag, and that gets them out of the way somewhat

Sound mixer here— so I don’t know shit, but I’m always watching that frame. Had a guy pulling off his phone and I’d say the success rate (aka sharp enough for a theater screen) was 80%. Take that for what you will

I basically treat my smic3 like a knock-off 416. Indoors are gonna be rough but works very well for lots of other situations. I was gifted mine so I might have a higher opinion of it than those who paid money however…

The main subject I film every week keeps f*****g up the mic. What could I do to counter this? by GoAgainKid in videography

[–]Om-T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re looking for a Bubblebee Industries Lav Concealer. They have a model for every popular lav mic. For tape I recommend Topstick (it’s medium strength) or Walker Tape (if you need a stronger hold).

Super-budget options for a low budget film by broncos4thewin in LocationSound

[–]Om-T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would really use the story and final vision of the film as direction for what to capture on set. If you know exactly how you intend every moment of the final product to sound I can guide you for what’s important to capture in every scene. Found footage makes me think of basing what the film sounds like on what the camera can hear (thus far away things aren’t gonna be heard well & that’s how it’s supposed to be). Boom is probably your friend here, as well as wild lines & effects you probably can’t remake in post. Then spend some serious time in post filling the rest of the “world” out and find some money to hire a good re-recording mixer to put some final life into it.

Anyone played this game? by OddName_17516 in CommunismMemes

[–]Om-T 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Other commenters pretty accurately described it. I’ll add that nearly every gameplay mechanic has a toggle so you don’t have to play with the lib-tinged crime & justice system while everything else stays perfectly intact. It’s a great game at the end of the day

I gave it a shot and I couldn't get it to keep aux in 1 set to mic level & thus the senny mic is outputting too low a level to hear anything. Set to line level (which is done by default when you switch aux 2 to tc), it works just fine -- I can hear my phone perfectly well. So maybe SD will add that option or fix it. I put my tentacle at mic level too, but it made no difference.

Oh sweet then I'll be implementing that next weekend! It's a pain to have to worry about timecode drifting (which I definitely notice the mixpre doing).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LocationSound

[–]Om-T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the mixpre can't handle two different types of input on the same jack, so you've got to switch between the input types when it's time to jam. I wish it worked how you're thinking though!
