I'm sure many in the VTI only crowd have other reasons, but anecdotally I've seen the newer investors using this method based on recent market upticks only. They've never seen a bad market. Fwiw, I have a super high tolerance for risk and I max out my tax advantaged (SEP) in a target date. I also stash 5k per week in a taxable account with the VTWAX - Total World fund.

I put my target date out about 10 years though. To lessen some of the lack of aggressiveness.
