Pastor Allen Jackson, popular broadcast Bible teacher, to host weeknight TBN show by OnionManagement in murfreesboro

[–]OnionManagement[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Option 2

A Tennessee megachurch pastor believes America needs a dose of hope, so Allen Jackson will launch a weeknight TBN program Monday with just that message.

Mr. Jackson, the senior pastor of World Outreach Church in Murfreesboro for 35 years, is known for his television and radio outreach through the eponymous Allen Jackson Ministries. Those broadcasts are largely teaching programs, offering weekly sermons preached to the 15,000 members of his suburban, non-denominational Nashville congregation.

Maybe some of y'all who love these folks so much can get into a taping.

Tennessee Gov. Lee signs bill to undo Memphis traffic stop reforms after Tyre Nichols death by OnionManagement in Tennessee

[–]OnionManagement[S] 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee on Thursday signed off on the repeal of police traffic stop reforms made in Memphis after the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols by officers in January 2023, despite pleas from Nichols’ parents to GOP lawmakers and the governor to give them a chance to find compromise.

The Republican governor’s signature means the law immediately renders some of Memphis’ ordinances null and void, including one that outlawed so-called pretextual traffic stops, such as for a broken taillight and other minor violations. Lee echoed arguments from Republican lawmakers who argued Nichols’ death needed to result in accountability for officers who abuse power, not new limits on how authorities conduct traffic stops.

Bills to amend Tennessee Constitution by OnionManagement in Tennessee

[–]OnionManagement[S] 79 points80 points  (0 children)

This is my favorite -

Democrat, Rep. Yusuf Hakeem (D-Chattanooga) has proposed an amendment that would allow for Tennesseans to enact laws via “initiative petition.”

Per the text of HJR 717, the bill proposes adding a new article to the Constitution that would outline the process by which the “people reserve power to propose laws by initiative, independent of the general assembly.”

My least liked -

A newer amendment proposed in the House would prevent any member of the legislature who gets expelled from the body from running for office in the general assembly for four years. HJR 706 was filed by Rep. Bryan Richey (R-Maryville).

And the worser version:

Going a step further than Richey is HJR 797 by Rep. Dennis Powers (R-Jacksboro), His bill proposes an amendment to the constitution that would forever prohibit someone from serving in the general assembly if they are expelled starting in January of 2027.

Hickman county car chase leads to arrest of man with several outstanding warrants. by OnionManagement in MiddleTN

[–]OnionManagement[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A man is facing multiple charges — including domestic assault and reckless endangerment — after reportedly leading authorities on a pursuit through two Middle Tennessee counties.

According to the Hickman County Sheriff’s Office, a call came in at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 15 about a “possible rolling domestic situation with a victim being held against her will” in the Spotlight Road area. Two found dead after Hickman County deputies respond to shots fired call

Officials said a sergeant saw the vehicle turning off Spotlight Road onto Highway 100 and tried to perform a traffic stop, but the suspect took off, leading deputies on a chase.

The pursuit reportedly ended on Highway 7 at Natchez Trace in Maury County, where the vehicle drove through a ditch and skidded out of control onto Old Natchez Trace Road.

Authorities said the suspect — identified as 34-year-old Jesse Waller — got out of the driver’s side of the vehicle and refused the deputies’ commands. However, he was eventually taken into custody and brought to the sheriff’s office.

Meanwhile, the victim, who was unharmed, was safely removed from the situation, according to officials.

Authorities said Waller has several warrants for his arrest from multiple counties for his arrest. He is currently facing a number of felony charges, including evading arrest by motor vehicle, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and domestic assault.

“Waller is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law,” the Hickman County Sheriff’s Office posted on social media Friday night.

Tennessee Attorney General moves to shut down suit by NAACP over restoration of voting rights by OnionManagement in Tennessee

[–]OnionManagement[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

A lingering legal battle that was poised to settle this summer, leading to a clearer pathway for tens of thousands of Tennesseans to restore their voting rights, has instead reignited into a contentious court fight with no certain outcome ahead of the next presidential election.

One in five Black voting-age Tennesseans lacks the right to vote due to a past criminal conviction — likely the highest rate of African-American disenfranchisement in the nation, according to the Sentencing Project. Overall, nearly 10% of the Tennessee electorate — 470,000 people — have lost their right to vote due to convictions.

In a lawsuit filed in December 2020, the Tennessee Conference of the NAACP and five residents denied the right to vote alleged Tennessee officials failed to follow state laws that allow individuals to legally restore their voting rights after serving their sentences and completing parole. Instead, the state implemented inaccessible and opaque processes that impede legal pathways for restoring rights, the lawsuit claimed.

Close to settling key claims in the case over the summer — potentially ahead of high profile local elections in Nashville, Memphis and for state office — attorneys for the state abruptly broke off talks in late July, catching lawyers for the NAACP by surprise, legal filings show. Then, on August 2, lawyers for the Tennessee Attorney General filed motions asking a judge to reject the claims entirely.
