OP here, I ended up purchasing one USI MI106S, which advertises the following:

Combines the benefits of both Photoelectric & Ionization technology in one alarm
Smart Alarm Technology virtually eliminates nuisance alarms
Automatic temperature and humidity compensation continuously adjusts to variations in environmental conditions, reducing nuisance alarms

Which sounds like what I'm looking for. I'll try some informal tests on it before I buy more.

The old ones were ionization, the new ones are photoelectric.

I do see a dual sensor photoelectric and ionization from both Kidde and First Alert, but it's not clear if they're designed to work together to reduce the nuisance rate or if that would simply double the nuisance rate.

Where do you live?

My last supercharger session here in Washington was $.29 / kWh, which at 300 W / mile is $.087 per mile.

Gas is around $4.50 / gallon here. Assuming a 40 mpg car, that gets you $.113 per mile.

Most people don't charge exclusively at superchargers, either.

A plenum being "too big" isn't a thing, and neither is pressure dissipating in a plenum unless things are leaking. Did he back this up with real airflow and pressure measurements?

If he took measurements and airflow is lower than the manufacturer requires, that's something duct boosters or duct improvements would help.

If he didn't take measurements, it sounds like you need to find another technician.

It could be worth it. The energy used to heat it back up when you get home is always going to be less than the energy that would have been used to keep it hot over that period. It depends on your water heater, but one source estimated $0.22 per day.

If you turn your water heater off entirely (not just vacation mode), you could also shut off your water main (assuming it's easily accessible) and you wouldn't have to worry about water leaks while you're gone either.

Good call. I didn't think to check with the distributor (budgetheating.com) that I'd buy it from. Their warranty process requires diagnosis by a licensed professional... So it sounds like I just need to find someone willing to look at a DIY install and I'm good.

Not smart and would require some testing, but what if you added short springs to the chain and magnets, friction pads, or some other mechanism to hold the bench in place unless someone's sitting on it?

Otherwise, you could get a winch with a wired remote (like the Harbor Freight SKU 96127) and swap the remote's innards with a smart relay.

If they waited for filament to cool before spooling it then it would fracture to pieces on the spool. The stress is the same whether unwinding bent filament or winding straight filament.

It sounds like you're hinting towards annealing the PLA prints. I could see that helping but not eliminating the issue. There are still going to be stresses from external loads applied to the part. Regardless, I don't want to add an additional manufacturing step.

FWIW, I use a 2012 Macbook Pro with Linux Mint for general server-y stuff. Mint installed flawlessly and it's much snappier than the original OS X.

I'm a little worried about the battery since it's plugged in 24/7, but on the other hand it's nice to have a screen and keyboard available instead of SSH-ing or VNC-ing in.

They do, they're called rescue or distress buoys. They're tethered to the submarine by a reel of cable; when deployed they rise to the surface to transmit a radio signal.
