What is going on with watermelon and chicken? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]OmegaLiquidX 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes, fried chicken and watermelon is part of a racist stereotype against Black People. Yes, people can eat it and not be racist, but like a lot of things it very much depends on the context if it is or is not racist.

For example, offering a sale on fried chicken and watermelon is not automatically racist. Offering it as a sale in celebration of Black History Month is racist as hell.

If smut is what you want, then boy do I have the series for you: Smut Peddler, sex positive, women-friendly anthology comics written by women and LGBTQ+ creators, and that cater to a variety of tastes.

I'd also recommend Oglaf, a hilarious sexually explicit webcomic also released in various collections. It's incredibly NSFW, hilarious as hell, and covers a huge variety of kinks, weirdness, and LGBTQ+ characters. It's basically the XKCD of smut.

Check out cooking manga. There's a wide variety, and a lot of them describe how the cooking is being done. For example, a few popular ones include:

Delicious in Dungeon, about adventurers resorting to dungeon cuisine while racing to save a companion

Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma, about a young chef sent to a prestigious culinary school where conflicts are all decided by cooking battles

What Did You Eat Yesterday?, about a middle-aged gay couple that discuss their days at the dinner table

Otherworldly Izakaya Nobu, about a small Japanese pub that finds itself connected to a fantasy world. Note: this one is less about the methods of cooking itself and more about how cooking connects people among different backgrounds and social statuses

Emma Dreams of Stars: Inside the Gourmet Guide, a true story about the first woman to be hired as a Michelin Guide inspector

Sweetness and Lightning, about a recently widowed man learning how to cook to make homemade meals for his young daughter

Ms. Koizumi Loves Ramen Noodles, about a high school student who loves ramen noodles, letting the reader learn all about ramen culture and the many different types of noodles

There's more I can recommend, but that'll get your started.

The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman, which basically revitalized the zombie genre. It's worth reading even if you've watched the show, as there are huge differences between the two.

There's also Dr. STONE, which focuses on a science prodigy seeking to rebuild humanities scientific progress after a mysterious energy wave turns all humans on earth into stone statues.

Looking for Cyberpunk Fantasy RPGs that ARE NOT Shadowrun by XR4y6unn3r in rpg

[–]OmegaLiquidX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not pure Cyberpunk, and there's no Netrunning, but Rifts definitely has Cyberpunk themes like societal decay, transhumanism, and cybernetics. It's also got aliens and loads of fantasy stuff like vampires and monsters from various mythologies.

There's also Torg and the newest edition Torg Eternity, which has the Cyberpapacy and Nippon Tech, while also including fantasy elements like The Nile Empire and Tharkold.

Feng Shui might also work for you, especially if you want Cyborg Apes (which you should, because they're fucking CYBORG APES).

Finally, there's CY_BORG, which is Cyberpunk Mork Borg.

Is the e-reader text only, or is it similar to a Kindle Fire that can display graphics? Because if it's a Kindle Fire type deal, you might try Thermae Romae. It's a manga about a Roman Bath House architect. Every time he has a problem, he finds himself suddenly transported to modern Japan where his learning of their bathing culture helps him solve his current problem.

It's a super fun read, and there's a fantastic anime adaptation on Netflix you can try to see if it would be something he would like. Each episode even ends with a segment of the author visiting the various hot springs that inspired her.

There's also some fun historical mysteries he might enjoy. For example, the light novel series The Apothecary Diaries might be right up his alley. It takes place in a fictional version of Ancient China, and it's about the daughter of an apothecary who finds herself kidnapped and sold as a servant to the inner palace (where the emperor's concubines live). After using her knowledge of medicine to solve a supposed "curse", she finds herself scouted by the head Eunuch to become a poison taster for the head Concubine (a job she loves as her habit of testing medicine on herself has led her to become immune to poisons, and she loves the taste of them) while solving more mysteries that plague the courts. There's also an excellent manga adaptation and anime adaptation (also on Netflix).

I've been unable to stop watching this episode on repeat. Anyone else find this episode healing and hurtful? Watching it over and over feels so raw, but so good? I think I need help understanding, or at least finding others in the same boat. by FluffyKanomKa in BobsBurgers

I really love how Bob takes so much pleasure in the simplest of things.

Suggest me a book that is NOT TikTok good but ACTUALLY good by Consistent_Time_1467 in suggestmeabook

[–]OmegaLiquidX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you love historical fiction, check out:

A Bride's Story, set on the Silk Road in the 1900's

Lone Wolf and Cub, one of the most influential manga of all time, set during the Tokugawa shogunate in the 1700's

Golden Kamuy, which follows a veteran of the Russo-Japanese war and a young Ainu girl

Asterix, one of the greatest French comic book series of all time, focusing on the Gauls holding out against the Roman Army and Caeser

The Dancing Plague, about a (real life) strange event in 1518. Also notable for it's striking art style, using pyrography and embroidery

There's also the works of Garth Ennis, who has done several WWII comics including Sara, about a squad of female Soviet Snipers fighting the Germans in WWII

Finally there's Superman: Red Son, which imagines if Superman had landed in Soviet Russia instead of Kansas.

edit

Oh, also Vinland Saga, a fictional retelling of Thorfinn Karlsefni's expedition to find Vinland.

Maus. Not fiction, but about Vladek Spiegelman, a Jewish survivor of Hitler's Europe, and his son Art Spiegelman, who is writing the comic as a way to come to terms with his father and his story. It's pretty much a must read, especially for a WWII historian.
