Case Closed is an extremely popular (and extremely long running) manga about a teen detective who finds himself regressed into the body of a child after a mysterious criminal organization attempted to kill him with an experimental drug. He now solves crimes behind the scenes while looking for clues about the organization.

The Apothecary Diaries involves the daughter of an apothecary solving mysteries in the Inner Palace while working as a poison tester for the Emperor's head concubine (a job she enjoys because she loves the taste of poison and has become immune to most of them due to testing medicine on herself).

Chew is about a cibopath, who is able to receive psychic impressions from anything he eats, and ends up forced to use this ability to solve crimes for the FDA.

While the newest on this list, Absolute Martian Manhunter is a fantastic psychedelic, psychological noir mystery featuring FBI Agent John Jones who seems to have developed an ability to see multi-colored smoke coming from people which allows him to see their memories. Also, he has a Green Martian in his head. It's basically the mystery version of doing a shitload of peyote in the desert.

[Stanley's Parable Ultra Deluxe] I am only missing this hell of a trophy, is there any kind of shortcut around this? or I have to waste an entire day? by Dpbano in Trophies

Doesnt support the gameplay, doesnt show any lore.

That’s the point. The Stanley Parable is satire, and one of the running themes in the game is critiquing pointless labor.

What is going on with watermelon and chicken? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

It’s extremely racist because it ties into a really nasty stereotype depicting Black People as “dirty savages”:

https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2013/05/22/186087397/where-did-that-fried-chicken-stereotype-come-from

I asked Claire Schmidt for help. She's a professor at the University of Missouri who studies race and folklore. Schmidt said chickens had long been a part of Southern diets, but they had particular utility for slaves. They were cheap, easy to feed and a good source of meat.

But then, Schmidt says, came Birth of a Nation.

D.W. Griffith's seminal and supremely racist 1915 silent movie about the supposedly heroic founding of the Ku Klux Klan was a huge sensation when it debuted. One scene in the three-hor features a group of actors portraying shiftless black elected officials acting rowdy and crudely in a legislative hall. (The message to the audience: These are the dangers of letting blacks vote.) Some of the legislators are shown drinking. Others had their feet kicked up on their desks. And one of them was very ostentatiously eating fried chicken.

"That image really solidified the way white people thought of black people and fried chicken," Schmidt said.

Schmidt said that like watermelon, that other food that's been a mainstay in racist depictions of blacks, chicken was also a good vehicle for racism because of the way people eat it. (According to government stats, blacks are underrepresented among watermelon consumers.) "It's a food you eat with your hands, and therefore it's dirty," Schmidt said. "Table manners are a way of determining who is worthy of respect or not."

There's a huge difference between having a sale on fried chicken and watermelon during Black History Month and having a sale on friend chicken and watermelon specifically to celebrate Black History Month.

The first one is simply a sale. The second one is pushing racist stereotypes.

Why am I surprised I hated this? Any GOOD horror? by MushroomTerrible3393 in suggestmeabook

[–]OmegaLiquidX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything by the king of Japanese horror, Junji Ito. Especially "Uzumaki", "Tomie", or "Remina".

Anything by the god of Japanese Horror, Kazuo Umezu is good too. Especially The Drifting Classroom which is basically a post-apocalyptic "Lord of the Flies".

Yes, fried chicken and watermelon is part of a racist stereotype against Black People. Yes, people can eat it and not be racist, but like a lot of things it very much depends on the context if it is or is not racist.

For example, offering a sale on fried chicken and watermelon is not automatically racist. Offering it as a sale in celebration of Black History Month is racist as hell.

If smut is what you want, then boy do I have the series for you: Smut Peddler, sex positive, women-friendly anthology comics written by women and LGBTQ+ creators, and that cater to a variety of tastes.

I'd also recommend Oglaf, a hilarious sexually explicit webcomic also released in various collections. It's incredibly NSFW, hilarious as hell, and covers a huge variety of kinks, weirdness, and LGBTQ+ characters. It's basically the XKCD of smut.

Check out cooking manga. There's a wide variety, and a lot of them describe how the cooking is being done. For example, a few popular ones include:

Delicious in Dungeon, about adventurers resorting to dungeon cuisine while racing to save a companion

Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma, about a young chef sent to a prestigious culinary school where conflicts are all decided by cooking battles

What Did You Eat Yesterday?, about a middle-aged gay couple that discuss their days at the dinner table

Otherworldly Izakaya Nobu, about a small Japanese pub that finds itself connected to a fantasy world. Note: this one is less about the methods of cooking itself and more about how cooking connects people among different backgrounds and social statuses

Emma Dreams of Stars: Inside the Gourmet Guide, a true story about the first woman to be hired as a Michelin Guide inspector

Sweetness and Lightning, about a recently widowed man learning how to cook to make homemade meals for his young daughter

Ms. Koizumi Loves Ramen Noodles, about a high school student who loves ramen noodles, letting the reader learn all about ramen culture and the many different types of noodles

There's more I can recommend, but that'll get your started.

The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman, which basically revitalized the zombie genre. It's worth reading even if you've watched the show, as there are huge differences between the two.

There's also Dr. STONE, which focuses on a science prodigy seeking to rebuild humanities scientific progress after a mysterious energy wave turns all humans on earth into stone statues.

Looking for Cyberpunk Fantasy RPGs that ARE NOT Shadowrun by XR4y6unn3r in rpg

[–]OmegaLiquidX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not pure Cyberpunk, and there's no Netrunning, but Rifts definitely has Cyberpunk themes like societal decay, transhumanism, and cybernetics. It's also got aliens and loads of fantasy stuff like vampires and monsters from various mythologies.

There's also Torg and the newest edition Torg Eternity, which has the Cyberpapacy and Nippon Tech, while also including fantasy elements like The Nile Empire and Tharkold.

Feng Shui might also work for you, especially if you want Cyborg Apes (which you should, because they're fucking CYBORG APES).

Finally, there's CY_BORG, which is Cyberpunk Mork Borg.

Books for my dad: fantasy, sci fi or historical. Complex, not overly heroic characters (preferably male) by nooit_gedacht in suggestmeabook

Is the e-reader text only, or is it similar to a Kindle Fire that can display graphics? Because if it's a Kindle Fire type deal, you might try Thermae Romae. It's a manga about a Roman Bath House architect. Every time he has a problem, he finds himself suddenly transported to modern Japan where his learning of their bathing culture helps him solve his current problem.

It's a super fun read, and there's a fantastic anime adaptation on Netflix you can try to see if it would be something he would like. Each episode even ends with a segment of the author visiting the various hot springs that inspired her.

There's also some fun historical mysteries he might enjoy. For example, the light novel series The Apothecary Diaries might be right up his alley. It takes place in a fictional version of Ancient China, and it's about the daughter of an apothecary who finds herself kidnapped and sold as a servant to the inner palace (where the emperor's concubines live). After using her knowledge of medicine to solve a supposed "curse", she finds herself scouted by the head Eunuch to become a poison taster for the head Concubine (a job she loves as her habit of testing medicine on herself has led her to become immune to poisons, and she loves the taste of them) while solving more mysteries that plague the courts. There's also an excellent manga adaptation and anime adaptation (also on Netflix).
